Elbrus

Elbrus Ski Resort Russia

Elbrus Ski Resort in the northern Caucasus is on the flanks of Europe's highest mountain. Mt Elbrus in Russia has three modern gondolas taking skiers and adventurers up to 3847m elevation. Beyond that human and helicopter power can get you to one of the two summit peaks at a lung busting height of 5642m (18510ft).

Skiing Elbrus

Elbrus ski resort has recently completed a lift modernisation program replacing 2 aged gondolas and a chairlift with 3 modern gondolas. The nearly 1500m vertical of piste skiing essentially follows the line of the lifts and has an impressive longest run distance of over 12km.

The real reason to travel to Elbrus is for the big mountain freeride routes from the top at Gara Bashi and further up from Priut (4050m). Descents of over 2000m vertical are possible down a number of gorges running to the valley.

Elbrus Snow & Weather

A mountain as prominent as Elbrus creates its own weather patterns. Combined with storms from the north and moisture from the nearby Black Sea, the area is known for its consistent snow record. Glaciers extend from the Elbrus summit to near the top of the ski lifts. Ascents of the summit and skiing down are generally undertaken in late May and June.

Where is Elbrus Ski Resort, Russia?

Elbrus is located in the northern Caucasus mountains, close to the border with Georgia. The closest town is Terskol, 5min down valley from the ski lifts. Moscow is 1750km away to the north and Istanbul is 1150km west.

The closest major airport is Mineralnye Vody (MRV), 186km and 3hr drive to the north east of Elbrus. All flights to Mineralnye Vody are generally via Moscow.

Elbrus Accommodation

A surprisingly extensive number of lodging options exists in the valley below the Elbrus ski resort. From a ski in ski out perspective, several austere huts are located high on the mountain, but these are mainly used by those acclimatising for a summit attempt. If just skiing, options near the base of the lifts at Azau and the villages of Terskol and Elbrus provide ample accommodation options. The old ski resort of Cheget also has a few reasonable hotels.
