Where to Stay at Aletsch Arena

The ski resort at Aletsch Arena is effectively made up of seven different villages, so visitors are spoilt for choice when it comes to staying overnight. Much of the accommodation on the mountain is in traditional chalets or apartments within traditional chalets!

Three of Aletsch Arena's villages (Bettmeralp, Riederalp & Fiescheralp) are in the alpine zone near the ski lifts & slopes. High above the valley, they all have uninterrupted views all the way across to the distant Matterhorn. All offer a host of ski-in ski-out accommodation. Being south-facing, the villages also get loads of winter sun & the requisite spectacular sunrises & sunsets that go with it. All three are car-free & only accessible by cable car or gondola in winter.

Four other villages are in the valley below. Three of them are linked to the ski lifts (Moerel, Betten & the largest village of Fiesch) and the fourth, the smaller hamlet of Lax, has a train station for a quick rail trip to either Fiesch or Betten to catch the lift up. In reality, Betten doesn’t even rate as village - more of a locality than anything & Moerel is best avoided for overnight stays.

The valley accommodations are cheaper than on the mountain, but only Fiesch has a full range of services & shops available. In the alpine, Bettmeralp is the largest, most picturesque village, plus has the best range of shops & services. Fiescheralp is the best choice for those chasing powder.

Aletsch Arena's Best Village - Bettmeralp

At an elevation of over 1,950m, Bettmeralp is one of the prettiest alpine ski villages in Europe & certainly the best place to stay at Aletsch Arena. Most of the chalets, hotels & apartments are ski-in ski-out & close to all services which include restaurants, bars, grocery stores, bakeries & pharmacies.

See the Bettmeralp map here.

Access is via the integrated train & cable car station at Betten, itself only a 15min train ride from Brig. At the top of the cable car, chalets, guesthouses & hotels are spread along 800m of snow-covered trail toward the main cluster of ski lifts. The majority of Bettmeralp's hotels are near the Schönbiel & Bettmerhorn lifts.

Best Fiescheralp & Fiesch Accommodation

The second best alpine village at Aletsch Arena is Fiescheralp. Lacking the diversity of services, shops & traditional village feel of Bettmeralp, Fiescheralp is nonetheless the place to stay for powder hounds. Its high elevation of 2212m puts it above the treeline & fully exposed to the elements, but also with the associated spectacular views & ski-in ski-out convenience.

See the Fiescheralp map here.

Access from the valley is via the new integrated train & gondola station at Fiesch, itself only a 35min train ride from Brig. At the top of the gondola, Fiescheralp is effectively a small group of hotels clustered in & around the main ski lifts & the top station of the valley gondola.

Best Riederalp Accommodation

Aletsch Arena’s third alpine village is Riederalp. Spread across a wide area along a similar elevation as Bettmeralp, it retains the fine views, ski-in ski-out convenience & super lift access predominant at Aletsch Arena. Less exposed to the weather & with better services than Fiescheralp, but not as cute & compact as Bettmeralp, Riederalp represents a middle ground for those staying on the mountain.

See the Riederalp map here.

Access from the valley is via a cable car from the village of Mörel (Moerel). The cable car is just across the road from the Mörel train station, itself only just over 10min travel time from Brig.

Valley Accommodations

If one is unable to secure accommodation in either of the three alpine villages, we recommend staying in Fiesch. Only 35min by train from Brig, Fiesch is a lovely town & a far better alternative to the other resort valley villages. Numerous excellent quality hotels are in the village (as well as a few not so!), even though most are a reasonable walk/drive from the train/gondola station. At 1050m elevation, Fiesch is the highest in the valley near the resort & is more likely to have snow than the lower villages. There is a valley trail from the resort down into the village, but it is only a ski route & can be a bit 'sporty' in lean conditons! Additionally, the full range of shops & services trumps the lower villages. The best of the hotel & apartment offerings are the wonderful new WOO Loft Resort, Hotel Christania, Berghotel Derby & the most convenient in town, the classic, traditional Hotel du Glacier et Poste.

See the full lodging availability on our Fiescheralp Accommodation Listings page.

Should all else fail, Brig usually has some hotel rooms available at short notice. The train ride from Brig to Betten is short, so day trips to Aletsch Arena are easy.
