Hakuba Accommodation

Somewhat unique for a Japanese ski resort, Hakuba not only offers hotel accommodation, but also a range of self-contained apartments, houses, backpackers and other budget style lodging, although luxury Hakuba accommodation can be hard to come by. Most of the Hakuba hotels are western-style (mostly with twin beds, as is commonly the case in Japan), but there are some options for traditional Japanese style lodging where you can sleep on the floor on futons (and eat fish for breakfast!).

You can search for Hakuba accommodation availability and rates and make a booking via the Hakuba accommodation listings.

With Hakuba accommodation, your first decision to make is which of the villages to stay in. This may depend on which ski resort you most want to readily access, or whether you want proximity to bars, restaurants and shops, or whether ski-in ski-out accommodation is your priority.

The most popular villages for Hakuba accommodation for international visitors are Wadano, Happo and Echoland.

See our Hakuba Google Map for details on the various locations and to see where each of the properties are located.

Wadano Accommodation - Upper

The Wadano area has lots of Hakuba hotels that were built or redeveloped for the 1998 Winter Olympics. Upper Wadano is located adjacent to the northern part of the Happo One ski resort at the Sakka base, which has great mellow beginners’ terrain and a kids’ snow park. Most of the hotels are ski-in ski-out or close to it, so it’s popular with families and this is the place to stay if you largely just want to ride at Happo One. Upper Wadano best suits those who don’t want to go out every night because it’s somewhat isolated and you’ll need to use a bus or taxi to get to dinner, or you’ll get very fit walking up the hill.

Lodge Noichigo ($$) offers simple pension style accommodation in a great position that’s almost ski-in ski-out (only a 50 metre walk for beginners to the Sakka chair lift). The rooms have western beds and an ensuite bathroom, and the friendly hosts can drive you around to different places in Hakuba.

Wind Jacket Lodge ($-$$) provides economical accommodation, only a couple of minutes from the slopes. The lodge has 6 bed dorm rooms, and private twin and quad rooms with shared bathroom. The staff provide some additional shuttle services.

Wadano Accommodation - Lower

Lower Wadano is located closer to the Happo Village and finds a happy medium between access to the slopes at the Kokusai base of Happo One Ski Resort and proximity to restaurants and facilities. Most accommodation is at least 5 minutes walk from the Kokusai base, but there are lots of buses going past. Near the Mominoki Hotel is the large Rhythm Snowsports shop, “The Pub” that has a few eating options, a handful of other restaurants, and a bus stop that covers lots of different routes.

Mountain Side Hakuba offers deluxe 3 bedroom apartments for up to 6 guests, right opposite the slopes and the ski school.

Panorama Sanso ($$) has an excellent location, adjacent to the Evergreen Outdoor Centre (ski school with English speaking instructors) and the Kokusai base area of the Happo One ski resort. The inn has Japanese style rooms (up to 4 futons on the floor) with shared bathroom (onsen bathhouse).

Zen Chalets provide simple self-contained accommodation (with kitchen and sitting area), with 1 bedroom cabins or 2 bedroom chalets for up to 6 guests. Happo Village AccommodationThe Happo village area is vast, with some Hakuba accommodation clustered within a short walk of the Happo One gondola (Shirakaba base). There’s only one little green run near the gondola, so this area isn’t ideal if you have novices in your group.

The Gondola Apartments ($$$) are in a fabulous location right in front of the Happo gondola (therefore considered ski-in ski-out). The modern Gondola Apartments consist of 2 bedroom (1 bathroom) and 3 bedroom (2 bathroom) apartments with living areas and full kitchens.

Also perfectly located adjacent to the gondola is the Hakuba Gondola Hotel ($-$$), which offers a range of simple western style rooms, some with private bathroom. The hotel also has dormitory rooms and an onsen bath.

Ryokan Miyuki ($$) provides a simple yet traditional Japanese experience with rooms with tatami flooring and futons. Bathrooms are shared which includes a small onsen bathhouse. Ryokan Miyuki is very popular, in part because it’s only 180 metres to the Happo Adam Gondola.

A little further along is the Nakiyama base of Happo One where there are some ski-in ski-out Hakuba hotels such as the Marillen Hotel. This base area has night skiing and a steep green run, so it’s not ideal for complete novices either.

A little further away from the slopes in the heart of the Happo Village, there are lots of other accommodation options. The Hakuba Grand Apartments are a few minutes walk to the gondola and ideal for families and groups.

Hakuba Glad Inn Ebisuya is very well located, only a few minutes walk to the slopes of Happo One and in the heart of the restaurant and bar precinct. The Japanese inn offers well priced Japanese style rooms with tatami flooring and futon bedding. The rooms have a private toilet, whilst the bathing facilities are shared with an onsen (hot spring baths) on-site.

Hotel Rosenheim ($$) is located about 500 metres from the slopes of the Happo One ski resort. Rosenheim offers simple rooms with western beds and ensuite, with configurations of twin, triple and quad. The hotel has an onsite onsen.

Located in central Happo, Taigakukan ($$$) is a lovely hotel with Japanese rooms (with or without ensuite bathroom) where you sleep on the floor on futons, Japanese style. The hotel also has some western style rooms. Taigakukan has onsen baths (indoors and outdoors).

In general, Happo is the place to stay if you want to be close to the action, with the highest concentration of restaurants, bars, and shops. Happo also has very regular transport options to get to the other Hakuba ski areas.

The village of Echoland is located in central Hakuba. Echoland is not attached to any of the ski areas but is conveniently located for shuttle buses running between the resorts. The village is somewhat spread out but it still has a reputation for being the party zone and is popular with youngsters. Accommodation options here include pensions, inexpensive lodges, boutique hotels and apartments.

Laforet Club Hotel Hakuba Happo ($$$) is a lovely hotel with Japanese western combo rooms with ensuite for up to 4-5 guests. Laforet has nice indoor and outdoor onsen baths. The hotel is located 2km to the Happo One slopes, and is well connected to many of the ski areas via the shuttle system.

The town of Hakuba has various restaurants not far from the train station. Accommodation options include hotels, pensions and hostels.

Other Hakuba Accommodation Locations

Cortina accommodation primarily consists of the large Green Plaza Hotel that provides ski-in ski-out accommodation. The Cortina ski resort is family friendly and great for powder hounds. The hotel is not westernised and it provides a modern Japanese resort experience (there is no village at Cortina). Cortina is the most northern in Hakuba Valley, so access to many of the other ski resorts can be a little unwieldy.

Hotel Green Plaza Cortina (3 Star)
Ski-in/ski-out resort hotel with a variety of room types with western beds. There is a superb indoor/outdoor hot spring (onsen), 3 restaurants, a karaoke bar, ski shop, free wifi in lobby area, ski storage, kids games room, free shuttle from Happo One bus terminal & more ..

The Tsugaike village is ideal for those looking for a quiet holiday with minimal nightlife, ski-in ski-out accommodation to mellow beginner terrain, and a Japanese experience. Tsugaike accommodation mostly consists of pensions and simple hotels with Japanese style rooms (with futons on the tatami flooring) and Japanese meals.

The villages near Iwatake are even quieter. The Iwatake accommodation is typically inexpensive and consists of rather simple pensions with Japanese style rooms.

The secluded Hotel Sierra Resort Hakuba ($$$-$$$$) is located half way between the Iwatake and Tsugaike ski areas. This deluxe hotel has spacious modern rooms with configurations of twin, king (which is rather unique in Japan), and suites for up to 4 guests. The hotel offers high levels of service and (English speaking) concierge, and exquisite onsens including private onsen baths. Free shuttle transport is available to the major Hakuba ski areas and a night bus is offered if you want to go to other Hakuba restaurants. Sierra Resort is popular with families, in part due to the sledding area and igloo, and babysitting services are available.
