Kiriya Ryokan

Kiriya Ryokan

The Kiriya Ryokan provides a variety of Japanese and western style rooms (for 1 - 4 guests per room). It receives glowing reviews from customers and provides exceptional value for money.

Kiriya describes themselves as having the "relaxed atmosphere of a bed and breakfast with the pampering you would expect from a day spa"!

This is a very traditional ryokan and they have a night-time curfew whereby you must be home by 11pm. So if partying on is your thing, this may not be the place for you.

Where is Kiriya Ryokan?

The ryokan is located in the very historic part of the Nozawa Onsen village and is just 300 metres walk to the main hub of town where you will find the highest concentration of restaurants and bars.

It is located just 150 metres walk from the "Yu-Road" moving escalator which takes you to the base of the Hikage Gondola. This area is where ski school, child care, and the kids park is located.

See the getting to Nozawa Onsen page for information on the location of Nozawa.

Accommodation

There are two main room types available at the Kiriya Ryokan for 1 - 4 guests per room.

As is the way with truly traditional Japanese ryokans, there are no baths or showers attached to most of the rooms (but there are toilets) as the intention is that you’ll want to bathe in the lovely onsen onsite.

Japanese/Western Room (Max 3 guests)
  • The rooms are highly sought after
  • Two single western beds plus option of a futon bed
  • Tatami sitting area
  • Private toilet and hand basin
  • Private bathroom and toilet
Japanese Room (Max 4 guests)
  • All Japanese style bedding - futons on tatami mats
  • Different sized rooms
  • Private toilet and hand basin
  • Some with private bathroom
All rooms have Japanese living room furniture (low table and floor chairs), TV, telephone, a small fridge, tea set, and provide a yukata, towels and toothbrush.

Facilities

The hotel has a mineral rich, natural spring fed indoor Japanese bath house (onsen), a communal lounge area, and free wifi access in lounge.

There is a drying room, drink vending machine, launderette, and free onsite parking.

Next door in an outdoor onsen that you can pay a small fee to use.

Restaurants

The hotel has its own restaurant serving breakfast and dinner.

A Japanese & western buffet breakfast is generally included in packages.

Evening meals are not normally included however you can make a reservation for dinner. The meals are traditional Kaiseki-style (sort of like exquisite tapas) and they can cater for special dietary requirements such as vegetarians.

The Powderhounds have not yet visited this property however we have compiled an editor’s review and ratings based on trawling and summarizing dozens of reviews. Overall this property was rated very highly and most people rated it as excellent. Here is a summary of what people said:
LOCATION - very good location close to restaurants, bars, public onsens and lifts.
SERVICE - everyone just raved about the 5-star service. The hosts just couldn't do enough to make everyone's stay extra special and they also speak quite good English.
ROOMS - spacious and comfy. Most westerners preferred to stay in the Japanese room to immerse themselves in the whole Japanese experience.
FACILITIES - the ryokan has traditional Japanese furnishings and many hand-crafted features providing an extra Japanese feel to the place. There is a natural hot springs fed onsen. It was said to be "no frills" but very clean and more than adequate.
MEALS - the breakfast was said to be very good with both western and Japanese options on the menu. A highlight for many people was the night time dinner experience. They also cater well for special dietary needs.
VALUE - several people specifically mentioned that this place offered particularly good value for money.

I can't wait to visit this place!
