Lodge Matsuya is an older style Japanese pension (inn) in Nozawa Onsen that offers great value for money and exceptional service. It provides both Japanese and western rooms, some with private amenities.

Where is Lodge Matsuya?

Lodge Matsuya is located only 70 metres walk to the central village of Nozawa Onsen and about 3 minutes walk to the "Yu Road" moving walkway that goes up to the slopes, and about 5 mins walk to the Nagasaka Gondola lift.

Accommodation

There are 2 room types available in varying standards at Lodge Matsuya (and smoking/non-smoking options) ideal for 1 - 4 guests per room:

Twin Western Room (Max 2 guests)
2 x single western-style bed
Private toilet in some rooms
No extra bedding capacity

Twin Japanese Room (Max 4 guests)
Tatami floor with futon bedding
Shared bathroom & toilet
Extra 2 futon beds possible

All rooms have TV, wifi and safety deposit box.

Facilities

The hotel has an indoor Japanese bath house (onsen) and wifi throughout the building.

There is ski storage, drink vending machine and laundrette. 

Restaurants & Bars

The hotel has its own restaurant and a Japanese/Western breakfast is usually included in the package.

A Japanese meal is available in the evening however bookings are essential.

There is no bar in the hotel however it is just a 3 - 5 minutes walk to the nearest bars in town.

Children and Extra Bedding

  • All children under 3 years stay free of charge when using existing beds 
  • up to 2 extra beds possible in Japanese rooms

The Powderhounds have not yet stayed at this inn however we have compiled an editor’s review and ratings based on trawling and summarizing dozens of reviews. Here is what the general consensus was:

The overall ratings for Lodge Matsuya were very good to excellent.

- Rooms were older style but clean and had good natural light

- Hosts go out of their way to make your stay pleasurable - and one of them speaks good English

- Food is fabulous and they seem to be able to cater for special dietary needs

- Older lodge, decore is a bit tired however for the price and special service it offers exceptional value
