The View Hotel Shimataya

The View Hotel Shimataya

The View Hotel Shimataya in Nozawa Onsen is aptly named: many of its rooms and the onsen have stunning views of Mount Kenashi above the village, and the Chikuma Valley below and provides a variety of Japanese & western-style accommodations. It is 100% non-smoking and located about 500m from the Shin-yu double chair.

Where is The Nozawa View Shimataya?

This spacious, airy property offers very comfortable western and Japanese accommodation, a short stroll from the moving walkway and thence the slopes. It’s a stone’s throw from several of Nozawa Onsen’s many great restaurants, 50 metres from the nearest “soto-yu”, or traditional public bath, and less than a minute’s walk to the starting station of the local bus service.

The hotel is at the western end of the village and about 0.5km from the Shin-yu double chair lift which takes you to the base of the Hikage Gondola (ski school, info, cafes etc). This lift is free and you buy your lift ticket at the top if you plan to ski. Or it’s about 400 metres to Yu Road (up to Hikage).

The ryokan is 300 metres to the main hub of town.

Homely, Relaxed & Clean

03/11/2016
This establishment was very good; the only negative being that the rooms and bathrooms were a bit on the small side and the decor a little dated.

LOCATION - the location was good as it was only 3 mins walk to the free access chair lift and about 200m to the centre of the village. There were also a good number of restaurants and bars all within a couple of minutes walk. The property is located on a hill and our room had lovely views.

ROOMS - our deluxe room was good sized although the bathroom quite small. The decor was a bit dated however they were clean and tidy.

MEALS - included in the rate was daily breakfast which was a combination of traditional Japanese and western food such as coffee, toast and cereals for us less adventurous. The breakfast was well presented. In the evening there was a traditional Kaiseki multi-course restaurant (pre-bookings were essential). It was exceptional.

FACILITIES - the property had its own segregated male / female onsen (Japanese bathhouse). The mens onsen had the best view in town! There was a  ski/snowboard storage area. We liked the warm communal area in the hotel where you can purchase inexpensive beer & drinks from the vending machines making it a great place to catch up with mates and to post on facebook.

SERVICE - some of the staff speak limited English yet the staff went beyond the call-of-duty to make our stay extra special.

The View is a comfortable, clean, friendly, homely and relaxed hotel in a good location but is not 5-star. If you want luxury, this is not for you.
