Chalet Shiga

Chalet Shiga

Chalet Shiga is a well located Shiga Kogen accommodation option in the village of Ichinose. Chalet Shiga is a Japanese style hotel with some western comforts such as western beds and some western breakfast options in case you don’t want to go “fully Japanese”.

The building is home to the Teppa Room Bar and tap room, selling Shiga Kogen beer and various other drinks. Real bars are very rare at Shiga Kogen because it’s a national park and there are all sorts of weird rules, so whilst this is not a party destination, the Teppa Room is a nice unique spot for a quiet après ski drink.

Accommodation is available as lodging only, with breakfast included, or a half board package with breakfast and dinner included.

Where is Chalet Shiga?

Chalet Shiga is located in the Ichinose village with very easy access to the Diamond and Family Ichinose ski areas of Shiga Kogen, being only 1 minute walk away. See the travel to Shiga Kogen page for information on getting there.

The Ichinose bus stop is steps away from the hotel’s front door, with buses to Nagano train station, the snow monkeys, the southern Shiga ski areas, or to Okushiga Kogen where there is an international ski school that offers group lessons in English. Or there are options for private lessons in English in Ichinose village and an in-house ski instructor at the hotel.

The Ichinose village is centrally located so it’s easy to access various other ski areas at Shiga Kogen. Ichinose is good for nervous beginners because the green terrain is mellower than at some of the other areas. This village has the most restaurants, izakayas and bars, but don’t get too excited as this is just relative to some of the other villages that have zip nightlife. Ichinose also has good access to facilities such as ski hire.

Free car parking is available.

Rooms

One room type has two western beds as well as a tatami seating area where a futon can be placed for a 3rd guest. The western rooms have an ensuite bathroom with private toilet, shower and bath. Rooms have a TV, fridge and electric kettle. Or there are full Japanese rooms with shared bathrooms and bathing in the onsen onsite.
Other room types also exist such as large family western rooms with up to 5 single beds, although these are hard to come by.

Facilities and Services

Chalet Shiga hotel facilities and services include:
  • Spacious onsen baths
  • Sauna
  • Coin operated laundry
  • Gift shop where you can buy drinks, snacks and kitsch Japanese souvenirs
  • Ski storage
  • Free wifi in the lobby
  • Equipment rentals
  • Some English speaking staff
  • Lift ticket sales
  • Vending machines for drinks
  • Ski instructor

Dining & Bar

Breakfast consists of a buffet of Japanese and western dishes.

Dinner at the hotel dining room generally consists of set menus of delicious Japanese fare.

Or there are bar snacks and light meals available at the bar, which you can wash down with Shiga Kogen beer, wine and sake. The bar is generally rather quiet and a nice place to relax and chew the fat. There’s no fear that there will be loud music into the wee hours that will keep you awake!

Excellent

We found this to be an excellent value hotel and would be very happy to stay there again. Our room was decent sized and we liked that we had western beds but also a Japanese area to sit and spread out.

Breakfast was OK and at least there were some items that we recognised. We had dinner in at the hotel a few nights and found it really really nice. We also went to dinner down the road at the Nepalese restaurant and a couple of others.

Hanging out in the bar after skiing was quite nice and the people that ran the bar were really friendly. It was also nice to meet a few like-minded skiers in there. It wasn’t a night club by any means, just a relaxing spot, and better than just getting beers out of the vending machine like you have to at most Japanese hotels.

The hotel needs a bit of an update, but it sounds like all the hotels in Shiga are like this.
