Yuzawa accommodation ranges from traditional Japanese ryokan with onsen in the centre of town, to full scale ski-in ski-out resort hotels at the ski resorts. There are also lots of simple pensions scattered around the region.
Tokyo-ites turn up to Yuzawa
en-masse on the weekends, and Saturday night premiums are charged at most of the Yuzawa hotels, and availability can be scarce. Yet if you plan to stay in Yuzawa the other 6 nights of the week, some great value Yuzawa accommodation deals can be found.
Central Yuzawa Hotels and Ryokan
Staying in central Yuzawa provides the distinct advantage of being close to the Echigo Yuzawa train station, which is the hub of bus transport to the ski resorts. If you want to sample multiple ski resorts, this is the best area to stay. This area also has a very high concentration of restaurants so it’s nice to be able to wander the streets and explore the many cute restaurants and bars. Most of the central Yuzawa hotels are on the west side of the train line.
The Yuzawa Grand Hotel
is a great pick for a Yuzawa hotel/ryokan. The Powderhounds have stayed at this deluxe hotel and enjoyed using it as a base to explore various nearby ski resorts. It’s perfectly located only 100 metres from the west exit of the train station, and bus stops to many of the ski resorts are just near the front of the hotel. The Yuzawa Grand Hotel has large western rooms (twin, triple, quad) with a tatami sitting area, or a range of traditional Japanese rooms with futons on the tatami. All rooms have an ensuite bathroom, or you can choose to bathe in one of the beautiful indoor or outdoor onsens at the hotel. There is a ski rental shop on-site. It has ski-to-door access from the Ipponsugi Ski Resort, but keep your expectations low because this is a tiny beginners slope with expensive lift tickets.
Also in a fabulous location, right next door is Echigo Yuzawa Hatago Isen
. It is a beautiful Japanese ryokan with very traditional Japanese decor, although rooms have western beds rather than sleeping on the floor. Rooms have a private toilet, whilst bathing facilities are within the onsite onsen.
Echigo Yuzawa Onsen Sakura Tei
is also really close to the west exit of the train station (350m away) so it’s easy to get to various ski resorts. It has either Japanese rooms with shared bathroom or western style rooms with ensuite. Like most other Yuzawa hotels, it has onsite hot spring baths.
provides Japanese style accommodation and it offers a beautiful onsen. The outdoor onsen provides spectacular views across the mountains. This hotel offers a deluxe Japanese experience. All rooms have tatami flooring with futons and the deluxe large rooms have their own open air hot spring bath. It’s a 500 metre walk from hotel Futaba to Yuzawa Kogen
, and only 500m to the train station.
Yuzawa New Otani Hotel
is 600 metres from the Echigo Yuzawa train station and only 350 metres to the Yuzawa Kogen Ropeway
, so this is a great pick for beginner and intermediate riders wanting to ski/snowboard at Yuzawa Kogen, Gala Yuzawa
and Ishiuchi Maruyama
. The hotel offers both Japanese-style rooms with tatami (woven-straw) flooring and private toilet, and western rooms with ensuite bathroom. Yuzawa is an onsen town, so naturally there are indoor and outdoor hot spring baths on-site.
The Yuzawa Toei Hotel
is only 100 metres from the Yuzawa Kogen Ropeway, whilst Yuzawa Ski House
is located right opposite the ropeway station, so these are ideal if you want convenient access to Yuzawa Kogen and therefore Gala Yuzawa
and Ishiuchi Maruyama

Other Yuzawa Accommodation
is a lovely historic ryokan that has Japanese rooms with ensuite, a beautiful onsen, and the most lovely kaiseki dinners. The ryokan is famous because the “snow country” novel was written there, and Takahan has a small museum onsite to show the original writing room and to celebrate snow country. Gala Yuzawa ski resort
is 750 metres away, whilst Yuzawa Kogen
is 950 metres away. Takahan provides transport to these ski resorts and also to/from the train station. The Powderhounds have stayed at Takahan and can highly recommend it.
Ski in Ski Out Accommodation
If staying in a traditional Japanese ryokan and exploring town and its many restaurant is less important, and you want the convenience of ski in ski out accommodation in a resort hotel, there are a few options around the Yuzawa area.
The Hotel Green Plaza Joetsu
at Joetsu Kokusai Ski Resort
is ski in ski out and it provides all the conveniences of resort accommodation. Joetsu Kokusai is ideal for intermediates and also pretty good for beginners.
The Naeba Prince Hotel
at Naeba Ski Resort
is a massive resort hotel that’s very family friendly. Naeba ski resort is a good all-rounder for piste skiers and snowboarders, and it’s interconnected with Kagura which has some good powder hound fun.
is particularly great for beginners and has ski in ski out accommodation such as the Hill Side Inn Garden Cress.
Or Ishiuchi Maruyama
has various ski in ski out accommodation options including hotels and inexpensive Japanese inns (pensions) and lodges, and a few self-contained options.
