Alpure Peaks
Cat skiing or cat boarding at Alpure Peaks is awesome. It sure beats ski touring or skiing at one of the resorts or club fields. Instead of having to hike or hang on for dear life to a
nutcracker ropetow or uncomfortable t-bar, you get to save your energy for what you love the most – going down the hill! And skiing or boarding the fresh tracks at Alpure Peaks is a hundred times better than the tracked out runs and moguls you’ll find at the ski resorts.
Some people call
cat skiing “poor man’s heli-skiing” which really understates how good cat skiing is. Sure it costs half as much as heli-skiing but you still get great quality untracked snow and inspiring terrain, and in between runs you can relax in the enclosed snowcat cabin, have a snack and put your feet up. There’s no stress associated with rushing to get into a squashy helicopter.
Where is Alpure Peaks Cat Skiing Located?
Alpure Peaks is located in the Mackenzie region of the South Island of New Zealand, not far from Fairlie (which is about 2.5 hours south-west of Christchurch, or 1:30 hours from
Methven). Alpure Peaks is 30 minutes off the main highway between Christchurch and Queenstown, off the Fox Peak ski field road. Transport up to the mountain base area is via a Hagglund all-terrain vehicle.
Options for lodging include
Fairlie accommodation or
Lake Tekapo hotels. Cat skiing at Alpure Peaks can be combined with some lift accessed skiing at nearby Fox Peak,
Mt Dobson or Roundhill.
Cat Ski Packages
Alpure Peaks run single day cat ski packages so you can choose whether you want to go for one day or multiple days. Included in the package is the Hagglund transport, a safety briefing, lunch and of course the guided cat skiing.
Terrain
The cat skiing terrain is a powderhounds playground across 2,600 hectares. Alpure Peaks terrain provides 650 metres of vertical which includes large bowls, jumps, and a natural half pipe. This isn’t your average cat skiing!
The area has a top elevation of 2,200 metres so the snow quality is pretty good, and the chances of freshies are high.
