Down time can be whittled away with a few distractions in and around Mt Lyford. Some short walks are available to Crystal Lake, a short drive up the hill below the snow line.

Next to the Mt Lyford Lodge, Mt Lyford Horse Treks can show you the countryside on horse-back. Tours from one hour to three days are available to all from absolute novices upwards.

The coastal town of Kaikoura is worth a day trip if the mountain is shut down for the day. Some lovely coastal and waterfall walks, one of the best (most accessible) seal colonies in the free world, views from sea to mountains, boat charters, fishing and seafood dining will easily fill a day. Try the Pier Hotel for some great seafood including crayfish, mussels, scallops and a tasty chowder - yum.

Or head to the town of Hanmer Springs for a good long soak in the hot springs.
