Great slopes close to Queenstown

Interesting and quite isolated slopes 40 min bus from Queenstown. We went here after a day skiing Coronet and were pleasantly surprised. Only three major chairlifts plus another small one but some great access to some excellent runs. Good blue to black selection, pretty light on green. Much better snow than Coronet in the same week.

Easy rental (performance rentals decent with some good all mountain Volkl skis). Bus transfer from downtown simple.

I'll go back - really was a nice surprise as I wasn't expecting much.

More of a party place than an actual snow trip

Remarkables being the closest resort to Queenstown, so naturally the place is filled with hungover seasonaires who couldn't give a shit about the kid that fell over and is being dragged by the chair lift. The south Island has always had extremely low snowfall, so I'm confused as to why the it has the same snow rating as a resort at 3000m in the European alps? It is busy. very busy. you will que for everything, including the drive up to the mountain and the drive home. The off piste is very minimal as the lifts don't access much of the surrounding terrain, so you are expected to hike. This place is expensive for what it is, mostly due to being right next door to queenstown. If you want an actual fun resort that is inexpensive and a genuinely friendly place, hit up the club mountains a few hours North, Broken River and Craigieburn are significantly better than Remarkables.

The remarkables and coronet peak are the same company. We paid over 300 for boarding and hire. We were advised to purchased a package on the advice that of you do not use the slope and obtain a beginner lesson then a ski pass is not required.

When we signed in it took in excess of 1 hour and 20 minutes because I quote “one system is not taking to another”. This was incovenient however I understand technical difficulties can occur.

During our ski hire on each day I was advised that my hire pass was on the ski booking however was not applied to the pass. Each time I had to go to the main desk to advise the rental area. This had to happen each day.

When we left the lodge I attempted to obtain the credit based on the written and verbal advise from coronet peak. The manager at remarkables applied the credit to the good looking lady in front however refused to credit me because I “didn’t book at remarkables and I could try it at coronet peak”(1 hour drive). I explained how it was beginning to be frustrating and if it was this important then I will leave the $78. As I left the employee and the manager started laughing in a disrespectful manner to each other.

The snow was beautiful and our ski instructor was amazing. I just wish the enquiries area took a page from our instructors book, were a bit more professional and accommodating as it was a disappointing experience.

Great sidecountry terrain, we arrived about 3 days after a storm and still got fresh tracks after 5 10 minutes of hiking. I skied alone and would not normally go out by myself but it was patrolled and technically still inbounds.

Also my daughter took an all day lesson and loved it the terrain was great for her and they even gave her lunch.

The only negative is the lifts all meet at the bottom and gets really crowded at the base, but that is no big deal considering all the side country train there is.

The Best Slackcountry in NZ & Aus

If I had to pick one ski area in NZ and Australia to ski for the rest of my life, this would be it. A 5 minute traverse or 10 minute hike opens up some superb and often untouched terrain - much of it patrolled and actually in-bounds (this is important for avalanche control - total snowfall might not be that high, but can be a lot of wind-loading on the lee slopes).

There are at least a dozen different areas of slackcountry and easy backcountry to head off into - at least left, right and up from the top of the three main lifts, with a few more different directions from the top of Shadow Basin, e.g. East Face/Boulder Basin vs the chutes vs the weather station & peak all on skiers right.

If you ever get bored skiing this mountain, you are either unfit, ill-informed, or in need of a few more lessons.

Remarkable Transformation

Some nice fluff

New day lodge and 6-pack chair lift
Nice views

What a remarkable transformation this ski resort has experienced! It’s still a reasonably small ski field, but a lot of investment has gone into improving the infrastructure and its usability.

The large new day lodge is impressive and NZski has learned a lot from their Coronet Peak experience regarding design and how to efficiently manage large crowds. Firstly it’s much easier to access the day lodge via road now, instead of interrupting the beginners and taking over their magic carpets. The most obvious improvement is the ambience of the cafeteria, and that the spacious and cheerful eating areas make the most of the vistas.

The new 6-pack chair lift is very fast so you can easily get in lots of vertical. This chair has added some much needed additional terrain for intermediates, although the ski field still lacks in terrain variety for blue-runners.

The additional snow making is great, particularly on the Waterfall run which combined with the grooming, allows easy egress to the Shadow Basin chair.

The improvements to the road are also very good for safety, with the addition of some guard rails and the paving of the initial part of the access road. There are plans afoot to fully pave the road, which will put The Remarkables on par with Coronet Peak (and most other ski resorts around the world!).

See the pros and cons on the overview page for more information and also see our ski resorts ratings to see how we rate The Remarkables ski field against other ski resorts.

This is a fantastic resort that is in the middle of being upgraded with better facilities, runs and lift access. When there has been some decent snow, this is probably the best place to go near Queenstown.

The road up can be a little hairy, but again they have made some improvements with guard rails and bitumen in the past years.

Remarkable Views

The Remarkables ski field has lots of things going for it in its own right. However its proximity to the amazing ski town of Queenstown is one of the huge bonuses of skiing at The Remarkables. And with regular shuttles from Queenstown, it’s reasonably easy to get there if you don’t have your own car.

Pros: good hike-to-terrain; great terrain parks; very family friendly; and a superb set-up for novices.

As is common to various New Zealand ski fields, cons include: no on-mountain accommodation so a daily commute is required; a gnarly access road; inconsistency with regards to the snow quality; small terrain size; and lack of trees so there’s potential for impaired visibility in foul weather. Other cons include limited lift-accessed terrain for advanced and experts, and limited intermediate terrain.

Great terrain, and can always find something untracked if you're prepared to hike about through some of the gates.

I can't wait to give the new Curvy Basin Chair a go this year with the new runs opening up.
