Where is Roundhill Ski Field?

The Roundhill ski area is situated in the Mackenzie District overlooking the gorgeous Lake Tekapo. Roundhill is 32km from the Lake Tekapo township, an easy 30-35 minute drive, so it's often referred to as the Tekapo ski field.

Lake Tekapo village is the approximate half way point on the highway (SH8) between Queenstown and Christchurch. Tekapo is 227km southwest of Christchurch and 257km northeast of Queenstown. Roundhill is 65km from Fairlie and 65km from Twizel.

Other ski fields in the Mackenzie District include Ohau and Mt Dobson.

Driving to Roundhill from Tekapo

The drive to Roundhill is very easy, especially relative to most other New Zealand ski field roads.

The turn off SH8 to Roundhill is a couple of kilometres north of the Tekapo township. The partly paved road meanders alongside the picturesque lake. After 24km is a well signed turn off that ascends to Roundhill. The gravel road has a gradual pitch and doesn’t have any scary drop-offs, so it’s very reasonable for 2WDs or campervans. Chains can be hired from the service stations in Tekapo if required.

Getting Around Roundhill

NZ Unlike some NZ ski field car parks that are disgustingly muddy, Roundhill has a beautiful car park covered in lots of stones. So if you want to wear your new white ski pants, don’t be bashful!

One side of the car park is conveniently adjacent to the beginners’ slope, so pack your deck chairs and chilly bin if you want to lounge about and watch the kids. And there are no long trudges up to the ticket office or the need to catch a shuttle bus – it’s only a stone’s throw away.

Getting around Roundhill ski field is very easy as the buildings are compact and adjacent to each other. The only exception is the toilet facilities. These require a bit of a walk.
