The Best Way to Experience the Canterbury Backcountry

Beautiful untracked spring corn
The terrain choice is huge
And if you like it steep....
Be prepared to do a bit of hiking to get the goods
Black Diamond Safaris are a totally awesome laid back but professional operation. Brett is the owner and lead guide and you cant help but feel that you are in safe hands from the time he loads your skis onto the "truck" (that's code for "BIG 4wd"!).

We were amazed that we were skiing such great snow given it hadn't snowed for days and the sun was beating down baking the snow. Creamy untracked turns every run!

We stayed at Mt Taylor Lodge which is a superb lodge with a great host. See our review for Mt Taylor Lodge here

With this combination of lodging and guiding you can't help but have a great time.

Great two day trip with Black Diamond Safaris to club fields

29/10/2013
I spent 2 days with the Black Diamond Safaris crew and would highly recommend going with them if you want to check out the Club Fields. I had never been before and definitely found it useful having someone show me how to use the tows / nutcrackers, provide the equipment and guide me around the mountain to the best snow / runs. I also found the club fields a lot more interesting, less crowded and more scenic than Mt Hutt.

The first day I went to Craigieburn & Broken River with Brett, which had great terrain and a really chilled out atmosphere (beers in the sun and pizza for lunch was great). The next day I went to Mt Olympus with Sloppy and I thought that the terrain was even better and the food sensational.

Over the two days we did a bit of hiking, which meant we could access some great runs. The tows / nutcrackers are a bit challenging at first and I was absolutely knackered by the end, but it definitely worth it. Brett and Sloppy were super knowledgeable about the areas and very flexible about where we'd go each day depending on conditions and what we wanted to do.

Overall, it was a great experience and if you're planning to go to the club fields then I'd highly recommend going with Black Diamond Safaris.

Super B Safaris

Black Diamond Safaris is located in Methven in a ski store named Big Al´s. Which is pretty easy to get your rental stuff, bookings, guide and a ride to the fields or whatever you are booked in for.

On a day when the most clubfields were closed, BDS even found a way to bring me up to the peak and also down to the pub. For my luck I was the only one who booked a day with BDS so I had my own guide. He is well informed about the area which makes it pretty easy for everybody to get the best runs. He was my age so it wasn't that boring. He actually did everything to show me the style of NZ skiing and peoples. Which are pretty relaxed in one way, grab a beer, sitting in the lounge, chill. On the other hand, the day was exausting because of the hiking, skiing up and down the hill, up and down the hill. But isn't it that what we all came for?

The rental stuff is really nice compared to other rental shops in Queenstown and also more value.

Thanks to BDS it was a nice experience. I would recommend these guys and place better than the areas around Queenstown.
