Kuhtai

Kuhtai in the Tyrol is the highest alpine ski resort village in Austria. With a base elevation around 2000m, quality snow, cheap lift pass and easy to navigate terrain, Kühtai has some of Austria's best skiing and snowboarding, a short drive or bus ride from Innsbruck.

The Powderhounds visited Kuhtai in late February 2018. Stay tuned for more information, our full review, photos and insights.

Where is Kuhtai, Austria?

Kühtai ski resort is in a high alpine pass only 35km west of Innsbruck airport and 18km east of Oetz. The drive from Innsbruck is along an excellent road that doesn't give any hint one is climbing to a lofty 2020m resort base. From the other side, the drive from the Ōtztal is more dramatic and prone to increased ice and snow conditions.

The gateway airport to Kuhtai for European and UK travellers is Innsbruck, for everyone else it is Munich or Zurich.

Nearby Ski Resorts

Kuhtai is part of the Olympia Ski World skiing region linked with superb ski resorts like Stubai Glacier and fun smaller ski hills like Patscherkofel and Oberperfuss (only a short drive away.

Kühtai is also lift pass and free ski bus linked to the nearby Hochoetz ski resort (8km west via free shuttle bus), which makes a convenient alternative when the weather is 'unfriendly' up high.

A host of other sensational ski resorts are a short distance away including some of the Powderhounds' favourites, Pitztal Glacier and Hochzeiger; plus, other not so favourites like the big, busy and tawdry Sölden.

Kühtai Ski Accommodation

Kuhtai is one of the few ski resorts in the world where all overnight accommodation is ski in and the vast majority are ski out as well. Everything is close to a lift or ski trail and everything is easily accessible by car either on, or close to, the main road. Lodging options include hotels, apartments and guesthouses.

If the ski resort is booked out, the nearby towns of St Sigmund, Gries and Sellrain have options to the east, but it is probably just as easy and convenient to stay in or near Innsbruck.

To the west, the small hamlet of Ochsengarten (near the Hochoetz ski resort gondola of the same name) has a range of convenient hotels, pensions and guesthouses. Further down in the Oetztal, Oetz is the main centre and has a variety of lodging options.
