Remarkables

The Remarkables New Zealand Review In relation to the scenery, The Remarkables New Zealand are true to their name. They are one of the most photographed mountain ranges in the world due to the spectacular jagged shapes and the steep rise above the shores of Lake Wakatipu. The mountain range is also famous for The Remarkables ski field.

Ski and Snowboard Terrain The Remarkables ski field, or the “Remarks” as some of the locals call it, has carved itself a niche in the freestylers market. The multiple terrain parks are very impressive, and the new Burton Stash park adds to the variety of opportunities for shredders.

The Remarkables ski terrain is also very well suited to beginners, and there is some advanced terrain and steep chutes for extreme skiers who don’t mind going for a hike. The ski terrain is reasonably small with only 220 hectares and 357 metres of vertical drop, and the resort lacks any decent groomers for cruising. Intermediates would be best placed to pick another nearby ski resort.

Snow and Weather The annual snowfall is not remarkable at only 3.7 metres, so powderhounds have to be lucky to score a big powder day. The ski area is made of up three north facing bowls which are sunny and sheltered from the wind and wild weather, so the resort is less inclined to have closed days compared to ski resorts further north.

Where is The Remarkables Ski Field? The Remarkables ski field is located within The Remarkables mountain range on the South Island of New Zealand. It is a 45 minute drive from the town of Queenstown to The Remarkables ski resort. If you are not familiar with driving in the snow, the road up to the resort might be a little daunting as it is unsealed, and there are many areas with cliffs along the side of the road. A less harrowing alternative may be to catch one of the regular shuttle buses that operate out of Queenstown.

The Remarkables Accommodation There is no on-mountain accommodation at The Remarkables. Most skiers tend to stay in Queenstown accommodation and commute each day. Queenstown has a huge range of accommodation options, with something to suit all tastes and budgets. The town has resort hotels, motels, lodges, B and Bs, and lots of backpacker hostels. Use our accommodation search facility to help compare location, price and facilities.

Why Ski or Board at The Remarkables NZ? The ski resort is great for the little rippers and it’s the perfect place to shred it in one of the terrain parks. The atmosphere at The Remarkables is very relaxed, and the culture of the resort is probably reflected in its popularity with park riders and families. The Powderhounds have given The Remarkables a “best skiing in New Zealand” award for the best terrain park.
