Valdez Heli Ski Guides Alaska

Valdez Heli Ski Guides operate in the Thompson Pass area of the renowned Chugach Mountains where commonly more than 25 metres (1,000 inches) of snow falls annually. Go heli skiing with Valdez Heli Ski Guides and often you won’t just need a snorkel; you’ll need scuba gear! You won’t make fresh tracks, just fresh trenches!

And considering the legendary maritime Alaskan snowpack, the likelihood of being able to ski the steeps is heightened. The runs might not be as extreme or crazy as those depicted on ski movies, but often the conditions allow for some fantastic pitches to be tackled; the ultimate in steep and deep!

Valdez Heli Ski Guides pioneered guided Alaska heli skiing back in 1993 so they’ve got years of experience at guiding within the Last Frontier.

More Reasons to Heli Ski with VHSG
  •  These Alaska heli skiing packages are significantly cheaper than most Canada heli skiing trips.
  • All VHSG trips have a low client to guide ratio (4:1) and there are only a handful of groups, so the experience is personalised.
  • The guides are incredibly experienced, as are the helicopter pilots, and there is a significant emphasis on safety.
  • Valdez Heli Ski Guides put a lot of effort into grouping guests appropriately to ensure that everyone has an amazing experience!
  • With VHSGs you can have an all-you-can-eat buffet of deep delicious powder! What more could a hungry powderhound ask for?!

Valdez Heli Skiing Terrain

VHSG has massive terrain with more than 2,500 square miles of mountains and 550 ski runs. The pitch of the runs chosen depends on the snowpack stability and the group’s ability, but commonly Valdez Heli Ski Guides access some of the steepest ski terrain in North America. This is big mountain skiing! Runs are spectacularly long; about 3,500 feet on average, and some runs are as long as 5,000 feet. That many powder turns are likely to put the excitement-ometer into overdrive!

Valdez Heli Ski Guides only cater to advanced and expert skiers and snowboarders, and they group riders by ability to fully maximize everyone’s experience. Those new to steep and deep can get tuition on slough management and ride the scenic glacier runs, whilst experienced backcountry skiers can tackle the steep gnarly couloirs when conditions permit.

Weather Alaska heli skiing generally has the shortcoming of frequent bad weather that results in no-fly days. However the weather patterns at Tsaina Lodge are more stable than other parts of the Chugach Mountains, so Valdez Heli Ski Guides only have about 20% down days. On these no-fly days, other activities available include ski touring, ice climbing, sea kayaking, and fishing.

Visited Valdez Heli Ski Guides and Tsiana Lodge in March (same trip as video on another review). As I had taught skiing at Jackson Hole in the 80s I knew Jeff Zell and requested him as a guide. The four in our party were glad I did. It was what I had dreamed of.

While the powder wasn't hip deep - it was silky smooth, the views incredible and the runs totally exciting. Our Austrian pilot (also a Denali rescue pilot) was a truly skillful flyer - loved the runs downs and the trips back up.

I skied with VHSG the winter of 2010-2011, not the epic one. But, I am going to write in anyways. I usually go solo on such trips and fitting in can be an issue at times with any company. But, VHSG matched me in and gave me an experience of a life time. It wasn't only the skiing, but the heli flights/landings, the people that I skied with, and the professionalism of the guides and support staff from VHSG.

I would ski again with VHSG in a heart beat, if the opportunity came up again! The new lodge looks great now!

Great guides, incredible pilots (I didn't expect the flights to be just as awesome as the skiing), and bad ass terrain.

Everyone we dealt with was super nice and accommodating.

As for the skiing, we were a little nervous because we consider ourselves expert skiers and didn't want to spend this much money if we weren't challenged. Wasn't even close to being an issue. The landings and drop ins were some of the most bad ass things we had ever done. We were also given plenty of options for most runs depending on what we liked to ski. And they do a good job grouping people. No one ever "held us back." When we drove back to our hotel after our first day, our smiles were ridiculous.

We did get really lucky, however, with the blue skies, new snow, and low avalanche danger. No complaints there.

We don't plan on ever skiing with another outfit in Alaska.
