Secret Spots of the Aosta Valley

Guided Freerando Powder Ski Safari along the Monte Rosa Massif

Head out for a week of fully guided skiing exploration between Zermatt Switzerland and Monterosa Italy. Staying on the Italian side of the border, the route connects several resorts of the Aosta Valley, but will visit Zermatt Switzerland if conditions are worthwhile. The tour generally takes advantage of the local ski lifts to climb to altitudes of up to more than 3,400m. From there, by short walks, or skinning, often virgin off-piste slopes await with ski descents of over 2,000m vertical possible. Transfers of your belongings are included to allow minimal carrying during the tour!

Join a 7-day fixed date tour in February or March or get your own group together on a fully private customised tour. Make a Booking Enquiry -->

Program

The tour starts and finishes in the village of Antey-Saint-André, on the road between Châtillon and Cervinia in the Aosta Valley Italy. Public transport can be taken to get there (train to Châtillon-St Vincent, then the bus toward Cervinia) or you can drive your own car, with parking available at the hotel for the duration of the tour. Your last day is a ski day ending with a late transfer back to Antey-Saint-André. It is possible to add another night's accommodation here for an additional tariff.

The tour takes in the ski areas of Chamois, Cervinia, Zermatt & the 3 interlinked valleys of Monterosa Ski.

The Val d'Aosta tour is something alive, influenced by many factors such as the weather, the snow cover, and the operation of the lifts, to name but a few. Your guide, an expert in the region, will continually evaluate these factors to define the best option and possibly modify the program accordingly. Elevation gained and skiable vertical on the tour can vary greatly as a result.

For detailed information on the program, see the Itinerary tab.

Lodging & Meals

Accommodation is in comfortable, small hotels/guesthouses & mountain refuges. All lodgings have shared bathroom & toilet facilities. You will be in dormitories of 4 to 8 people, depending on the composition of the group and current availability. You will need to take a sleeping bag for the mountain refuges. It is also possible to sleep (on request) in a double room in some of the lodgings for an additional tariff. Breakfasts and dinners (hearty) are included in the accommodation. Lunches will be taken in the field, picnic style, prepared by the refuge staff to avoid portage.

Consider the fact that you will sleep in a mountain refuge during this tour, so you will carry your belongings in the backpack. It is recommended to take the minimum in terms of evening affairs/toilets.

Skiing, Ability & Fitness

The tour utilises as many ski lifts as possible to access the best terrain along the route, however short climbs and longer skinning approaches can be required depending on conditions. For fixed date tours you will need to be a relatively strong skier (strong intermediate to advanced). For private tour the group should be of the same ability but can be tailored to the skills of the group. The minimum age of participants is 16yo, & must be accompanied by an adult.

To join this tour you should have the following ability & experience: several prior experiences in ski touring/freeride skiing; know how to ski in all types of snow without being an off-piste expert; and be able to ski slopes with some short steep passages (>30°).

You should have a very good level of fitness to ski & tour all day. Daily elevation gain can be up to 1,100m max (or 500-600m if freerando stay). You must be able to carry a 6-8 kg backpack during overnight stays in a refuge. For freeride skiing, be able to undertake an approach walk of at least 45 minutes.

Ski Gear

Full ski-touring gear is required for the tour, however it can be rented at the start of the tour with prior arrangement. Avalanche safety equipment is included in the tariff, but if you have your own gear, please bring it along.
