Central Hotham Accommodation
The Central Hotham area provides some ski-in ski-out accommodation in large deluxe chalets at Hotham Heights. Other Mt Hotham accommodation in this area includes a couple of hotels, upscale apartments (condos), simple apartments, lodges, and some backpacker style accommodation. Even if the accommodation isn’t ski-in ski-out, staying in this area provides the advantage of easy access to lifts and the amenities in the heart of Mt Hotham. NB Parking is generally not included with most Hotham accommodation.
Davenport Village Accommodation
The Davenport part of the village is about 3km down the road from Hotham Central. It is located close to the kids’ ski area (Big D) and it tends to be a little more family friendly.
In addition to Mt Hotham apartments, Davenport accommodation is mostly in the form of shared lodges. Ski club lodges tend to have simple accommodation, many with bunk beds, communal living and kitchen areas, and shared bathrooms. This type of accommodation is super social and usually relatively economical.
With a short walk from most lodging, it is possible with decent snow conditions to ski down the Davenport Access trail (blue) or a black run to get to the main part of the ski area. However the accommodation is not ski-in and a shuttle bus ride is required to get from the ski area to the village.
The General Pub is an epicentre of eating and drinking, and there’s also a restaurant and bar at Jack Frost. NB Most Davenport accommodation does not include parking.
Dinner Plain Accommodation
Dinner Plain is a 11km drive or bus ride from Mt Hotham.
Most of the Dinner Plain accommodation is comprised of privately owned houses, chalets and apartments, so it’s well suited to families and groups. Dinner Plain also has several studio apartments that can cater to couples.
Dog Friendly Accommodation Dinner Plain
There are various Dinner Plain houses and apartments that are dog friendly, yet with high demand they tend to sell out very quickly. Once you've entered your dates use the "pet friendly" filter under Property Features and hit "Apply Filters".
Dinner Plain Accommodation Locations
Whilst the commercial precinct of Dinner Plain is very small (ie the village), the actual town is rather spread out. For many visitors, particularly those who largely want to stay in at night in front of the roaring fire, location may not matter that much. However in case you want to be close to “the action” or the ski slope, below is a brief overview of the different regions of Dinner Plain.
Central: For those that want to be close to the action and within stumbling distance of the restaurants and bars, stay in Dinner Plain accommodation along the northern part of Big Muster Drive or the lanes off it.
Eastern: Moving clockwise around the Big Muster circle, anything near Drybone Lane is within very easy walking distance of central Dinner Plain and is very close to the top of the ski run. At the end of this street is the handful of Dinner Plain houses that are considered to be ski-in ski-out to the Dinner Plain beginners’ run. In addition to parts of central DP, this area is considered to be the “old part” of Dinner Plain. Dinner Plain accommodation here is highly sought after for the proximity to the ski slope, traditional alpine architecture, the high country décor, and the gorgeously rustic chalets.
South: The southern part of Big Muster Drive is the furthermost part of town from the strip. This area tends to have some massive houses where you can really spread out, and some of the properties have views across to the national park.
Western: The western part of Dinner Plain (sometimes playfully known as the “western suburbs”) is the new part of town. The houses tend to be large and many of them have more urban and modern décor which is not quite in keeping with the high country décor seen elsewhere in DP.
Mt Hotham Accommodation /Dinner Plain Accommodation
The Hotham village is perched up high along the highway on a ridge and whilst it's spread out, it can essentially be divided into two main areas. Free buses provide transport between the different Mt Hotham accommodation zones and ski areas. The Mount Hotham accommodation options are diverse and cater to a very wide range of budgets and needs, from solo travellers to large families and groups. There are lots of Mt Hotham apartments and an abundance of ski lodges.
The other option for Mt Hotham accommodation is to stay in
Dinner Plain which is 11km down the road (about 20 minutes). A bus service operates regularly to connect Dinner Plain and Mt Hotham, or it’s easy enough to self-drive between the two areas. The charming village is popular with families, and
Dinner Plain accommodation consists of mostly houses so it's good for groups. One obvious con of staying in Dinner Plain is the daily travel required to get to
Hotham Resort Ski Resort, but one advantage is that you can park your car right outside the door to your accommodation so there’s no hauling your gear up snowy steps or parking miles away!
NB It’s somewhat rare for Hotham accommodation and Dinner Plain accommodation to have wifi due to ADSL and NBN restrictions but mobile data (Telstra) works very well.
