Chile Freedom Tour

Chile is a beautiful Andean country with its charming people and stunning landscapes. So if you travel to Chile to ski or snowboard, it’s likely you want to experience the real Chile, far away from those curated ski resorts that just feel like a slice of North America.

On the Chile Freedom Tour you’ll head south to volcano territory where you’ll get a prime Andean experience. The Chile Freedom Tour from Life In White Adventures is a guided and hosted tour where your guide will help you fulfil your expectations for hunting for good snow with some freedom.

It is a dynamic tour, where the exact locations are not locked in well in advance because you want the best conditions. Potential areas visited on the tour can be Nevados de Chillan in the Region del Ñuble, Corralco and Las Araucarias in the Region de la Araucania, and Laguna del Maule in the Region del Maule. Riding destinations are selected based on snow conditions and forecasts. The tour will be planned a week before after studying the weather forecasts well and the snow conditions, always having as a priority the safety of the group. Wherever your freedom tour takes you, you know you’ll be in the best hands.

Terrain

The terrain in the Andes is very varied. In the areas that you’ll ride it is mainly volcanic, with big mountain terrain along with playful gullies full of windlips to jump, and ancient forests to ride on the snowy days, and at such southerly latitudes it snows a lot!

The Chile Freedom Tour is mostly about lift assisted backcountry freeriding. Ski touring or splitboarding to get to even better spots is possible on request.

Heli skiing is also an option for great weather days. Aerotoscana operates in the impressive area of the Paso Vergara in the Maule region. This could take your Chile snow experience even higher.

Lodging

You won’t be staying in a big resort hotel where you’d be left wondering if you were in Chile or not! For your Andean adventure you will stay either in high-end mountain cabins or in small family hotels with a very marked personality and quality. Eating well is essential to perform in the mountains, which is why the chosen accommodations have a restaurant where they serve delicious breakfasts and dinners.

Ability

You need to be at least an advanced skier or snowboarder, with some freeride experience in powder and other off-piste snow conditions. Snowboarders need to be able to hold a traverse well and read the terrain so not slow down the group. You also need to have a good level of fitness. If you have any questions about ability level you can ask a question here.

Equipment

You will require avalanche safety equipment and if you don’t have your own, this can be rented.

It is recommended that you bring your own ski or snowboard equipment, but if you don’t want to lug it, rentals can be arranged, including tourings skis/splitboard.

Optional but highly recommended are a helmet and backpack with Airbag system.

If you have any questions about equipment, further advice can be provided.

Itinerary

The itinerary is somewhat flexible depending on weather and snow conditions, but it's most likely that the tour will start  in Nevados de Chillan.

Day 1 (Arrival Day)

  • Pick up at the Santiago de Chile Airport
  • Your guide will drive you (probably a 5 hour drive)
  • Stop for lunch in a good restaurant
  • Dinner at the first accommodation
  • Pick up time at the airport is from 10am to noon

Day 2 to 8 (Same Menu Each Day)

  • Breakfast in the hotel/cabin
  • Ski/snowboard until your legs say enough
  • Relax and dinner in the accommodation or any of our selected restaurants in the area.

Usually the group will spend 2 to 3 days in every stop of the tour and for the changeover days, the driving is never longer than 3 hours. Snow is the priority of the trip but also the comfort, rest, relax and dining. For that reason your guide always calculate the timings in and off the mountain to enjoy the skiing/snowboarding and also the rest of the day activities.

Day 9

  • Early breakfast at the accomodation
  • Drive towards the Santiago de Chile Airport. The drop-off time is from 3pm to 7pm.

You'll need to book an evening flight. When is not possible, you could book a morning flight for the next day and your guide will find a good accommodation in one of the airport hotels for you.

An optional day, perfect for down days or bad weather, IS on the coast of Cobquecura with accommodation at the house of Carlina and Ruperto, a charming local family. YOU will visit the Stone Cathedrals, the Loberia, (large community of sea lions) and many other wonders that the Chilean coast has to offer.
