Myoko Guiding – Off-Piste & Backcountry
Myoko Guiding Company are based in Akakura Onsen in Myoko and offer both off-piste and backcountry guiding at Myoko as well as surrounding areas. The region is renowned for receiving huge amounts of snow, and with varied terrain, there are options for great skiing or snowboarding (or splitboarding) in the off-piste, sidecountry and backcountry.
The Myoko Guiding Company offers single day or multi-day guiding.
Whether you’re new to the backcountry or a seasoned backcountry skier or splitboarder, teaching about gear and the snowpack is usually part of the experience to ensure the community is growing with knowledge.
Guiding Locations & Terrain
The terrain chosen will be dependent on your objectives (e.g. do you not want to hike or skin) and largely on the snow conditions and avalanche conditions.
The guiding could be in the off-piste (ie in-bounds at a ski resort) zones, the sidecountry (close to the ski area), and in the backcountry.
Ski areas may include those at
Myoko (
Akakura,
Suginohara,
Seki) as well as other Niigata and Nagano areas such as
Arai,
Nozawa,
Madarao/Tangram or
Shiga Kogen as examples. Lift-assisted touring options could include Kurohime, Togakushi or Ryuoo as examples.
If you have any questions about terrain you can
get in contact here.
Groups
Day guiding is best suited to private groups ie where you pull together your own group. This is ideal for group cohesion and ensures that you’re aware of everyone’s ability levels, fitness levels and objectives, and sense of adventure.
It is possible as a solo to request to join a group, and Myoko Guiding Co will endeavour to match you to others with similar ability and fitness and terrain requests including the amount of ski touring or splitboarding, but there are no guarantees. The pricing for a solo to have private guiding is twice the price of a group tour, and you’ll probably get more than the twice the value as a quality experience if you have a private guide to design the day that aligns with your objectives.
If you have any questions or want to ask about availability you can
make a booking request.
Ability
The private tours can be matched to the ability of the group which could include strong intermediates, advanced and expert skiers and riders.
Solos wanting to join a group should have advanced ability off-piste as a minimum.
Backcountry experience is not necessarily required and you may wish your guide to assist with coaching about avalanche safety or backcountry touring as part of your day/days.
Guiding
Your tour will be led by a ski guide +/- a tail guide depending on the trip. Trip maximums depend on the type of day tour, with a maximum guide to client ratio of 1:5, whilst for backcountry tours it is limited to 1:4.
Myoko Guiding Company is a member of Avalanche Canada. The principles of Myoko Guiding Co include world class guides, safety is paramount, education is key, and making unforgettable memories is important too. The lead guides are qualified backcountry guides (e.g. ACMG certified), whilst tail guides are avalanche professionals as a minimum.
Equipment
All guests must ski or ride with a pack and avalanche gear (transceiver, shovel, probe). You may bring your own, or these are available to rent or buy.
If you’re aiming to go touring and don’t have your own ski touring set-up or splitboard gear, these can be rented.
