Chic Chac Day Cat Skiing
Chic Chac operates a dual cat skiing operation near Mont Miller ski resort located approximately 600km NE of Quebec City.
They have 2 snowcats that can take up to 12 guests and 2 snowcats that can take up to 14 guests.
There are 2 cat skiing zones:
- Mount York is an exclusive mountain to the Chic Chac. It is further in the backcountry and is only accessible by a 45 min snowcat ride. Ski touring is forbidden. The York has more trails, glades and platforms than the Porphyre. Platforms, are wooden structures built by the Chic Chac to simulate cliffs and drops, making your descent that much more fun and exciting!
- Mount Porphyre is accessible to the public and maintained by the FQME. You can procure yourself a daily pass or annual membership on their website, or from the Chic Chac reception. The Porphyre is an intermediary to expert level mountain adjacent to Murdochville, making its accessibility very easy using skins, or catski.
It’s possible to do on average 8 to 12 runs in a day depending on the group's ability & speed, the amount of daylight on that day and the snowfall.
Avalanche safety equipment (beacon, probe & shovel) are included in your guided activity, but if you have your own, please bring it with you. A backpack is not included so you need to bring your own.
The cats operate every day of the week during the ski season provided there is a minimum group of 4 guests.
Daily Schedule
7:30 am - the day begins at the Chic-Chac Headquarters (old church) with an American or continental breakfast.
8:15 am - a brief information session on the day’s activities is held on the 1st floor of the resort. You will be given your necessary equipment ( beacon, shovel and probe).
9:00 am - departure from the headquarters, to either Mont Porphyry or Mont York.
Lunch
Due to the remoteness of Mont York, participants will be served lunch in a prospector tent on the mountain. However, it is recommended, especially for those with a sweet tooth, to bring additional nutritious snacks.
For participants from Mont Porphyry, a return to the HQ is scheduled at around 12:00 to 12:30 pm for lunch. Alternatively if the group prefers, individual lunch boxes can be supplied in the field.
3:30 pm - the ski excursion ends depending on the weather and the daylight available.
