Nassfeld Ski Resort Austria
Nassfeld ski resort in south-east Austria has expansive terrain in a high snowfall region. Averaging 7 to 8m of snow every winter, the resort's 30 ski lifts, 110km of ski trails & ample freeride zones make it an intriguing proposition. If there is a powder-filled storm-cycle in the region, head across the border into Friuli Italy and have a look at Sella Nevea & Tarvisio.
Skiing & Snowboarding, Lift & Terrain
The Nassfeld skiing & snowboarding terrain includes a sizeable 110km of piste trails on north-aspect terrain over true Alps’ diversity from a base at 610m altitude, to an upper lifted point of 2,020m. Whilst the full 1,410m skiable vertical can’t quite be skied in one go, it comes close. The ‘Carnia’ valley trail descends a full 1,200m vertical over its nearly 8km length. Nassfeld’s groomers are predominately for intermediates; there are relatively few opportunities for beginners beyond the novice slopes. The upper alpine has wide-ranging freeride terrain which is renowned for being wonderful on powder days & can include tree-skiing.
Ski lifts at Nassfeld underwent a massive upgrade around 20 years ago, but the improvements have been limited in recent years. Of the 30 lifts, five are high-capacity gondolas & six are modern 6-seater chairs.

Where is Nassfeld Austria?
The Nassfeld ski resort is in the south-eastern Austrian state of Carinthia (Kärnten or Kaernten), on the frontier with Italy, 230km by road north of Venice! The main lift base is at the village of Tröpolach, situated in the Gailtal (Gail valley) at a typically low Austrian elevation of only 600m. Closest major town & train station is at Hermagor-Pressegger See, 9½km (10min drive) from the lift base. The upper resort village of Sonnenalpe Nassfeld is a further 15 to 20min drive (11km) uphill from Troepolach.
Gateway airports include Munich (MUC), Venice (VCE) & Vienna (VIE) for international flights, or Salzburg (SZG) & Innsbruck (INN) for travellers from within Europe of UK.
By train, it is necessary to go via the city of Villach, 44km to the east of the ski resort. From Salzburg, trains go direct to Villach every 2hr, with journey time of around 2½hr. From Munich add another 2 hours to the journey. From Villach, the S4 line heads to the Hermagor Bahnhof every hour, with the journey taking 1hr. From Hermagor train station, take the free ski bus to the gondola at Troepolach, or get a private transfer direct to your accommodation.

Driving to Nassfeld is possible from Venice in around 3hr depending on road conditions in Passo di Pramollo (Nassfeld Pass). From the north, Munich & Innsbruck are around 4hr+ away and Salzburg is 2¾hr drive. If renting a car, we recommend doing so in Austria as it will be fully winterised.

Nassfeld Accommodation
Accommodations at Nassfeld are in three sectors from the valley up to the high alpine - Troepolach (at 610m altitude), Sonnleiten (1,380m), Sonnenalpe-Nassfeld (1,500m). The Gail valley below the resort is replete with villages & towns with winter lodgings. On the Italian side of the border, Pontebba is the nearest town.
In Sonnenalpe, a wide range of ski-in ski-out hotels, apartments & chalets are dotted across the resort. For the true Austrian Alps experience, the Tressdorfer Alm is a wonderful mountain guesthouse above Sonnenalpe. In the main village the best lodgings include the chalets of Alm Resort Nassfeld, Haus CKPK Lux Apartments & Almhotel Kärnten. Below Sonnenalpe, Sonnleiten is a collection of chalets, plus a few chalet-apartments & a hotel. All are close to the ski lifts.

In the valley, at the base of the resort, Tröpolach village has a great range of alternative options to the upper ski resort. Right at the gondola base, the mammoth & un-mistakable Falkensteiner Hotel & Spa Carinzia is not only the most convenient of the accommodation options, but also probably one of the most comfortable (& expensive!). Less luxurious & more traditional lodgings are dotted throughout the village below. Der Tröpolacherhof Hotel has the village’s best traditional hospitality, the BookNassfeld Apartments offer the best range for self-caterers. Numerous family-run guesthouses, chalets & apartments are throughout the village.
