Ski Andorra

Andorra is a duty-free, winter ski haven nestled in the Pyrenees between Spain & France. With an average elevation of 1,900m, the small principality relies heavily on its mountains and hence skiing to enable its tourist economy.

Andorra presents as a low key, low cost, tourist-friendly ski destination with an interesting combination of over 300km of piste trails, modern lifts & extensive freeride terrain spread over 3 different ski resorts. The principalities low tax regime means that all the over-priced vices in other countries are abundantly accessible in Andorra. Cigars, cigarettes, alcohol, perfume, and sweets are in such huge quantities, and so cheap, that it effectively takes the fun out if it!

Andorra Ski Resorts

Andorra has only three ski areas, Grandvalira, Ordino Arcalis & Pal-Arinsal. All are expansive & provide a world class ski experience.

Grandvalira ski resort is the largest in the Pyrenees & combines six base areas to occupy most of the southeast corner of Andorra. With over 210km of trails and a longest run of just under 7km, Grandvalira is a large ski resort by world standards but lacks the diversity of terrain to match its lofty expectations. It is very much a beginner & intermediate ski resort but there are a few quality advanced pistes & off-piste freeride options for the adventurous. The village base areas range in elevation from 1,300 to 2,120m elevation and include Encamp, Canillo, El Tarter, Soldeu, Grau Roig & Pas de la Casa. Several excellent ski-in ski-out hotels exist in Soldeu, El Tarter & Grau Roig. Pas de la casa will appeal to some for its high alpine location and ease of access to the lifts & entertainment. Grandvalira ski passes are now valid in Ordino Arcalis.

The intriguing Ordino Arcalis is relatively small inbounds, with only 5 chairlifts/gondola & 30km of piste trails on nearly 700m of skiable vertical. However, the ski area is better known for its wide-ranging & fun off-piste, freeride & ski touring terrain than its inbounds offerings. The Powderhounds enjoyed a wonderful, if frenzied, powder day at Ordino Arcalis, plus one of the best on-mountain dining experiences we have ever had!

The ski area Pal Arinsal (a.k.a. Vallnord) comprises two separate sectors connected by a cable car & covering over 63km of piste trails on 1000m of skiable vertical. The closest ski resort to the capital Andorra-la-Vella, Pal Arinsal also sits below the highest peak in Andorra, Pic de Coma Pedrosa (2,943m). Super convenient access to the Pal sector is via a gondola in the centre of Andorra's second largest town, La Massana – much to bemusement of the locals.

Lift Passes

Whilst very affordable day passes are still available at each ski area in Andorra, all 3 ski areas now have one pass valid in all resorts. Do the maths at the cash desk to work out what is best for you!

The Ikon Pass (North American based) now includes several free ski days in Andorra shared between the 3 resorts of Ordino Arcalís, Pal Arinsal, and Grandvalira. Depending on the pass one has there are either 5 or 7 days available. A full Ikon Pass has 7 free days with no blackout periods, and Ikon Base Plus Pass or Ikon Base Pass have 5 free days and no blackout periods. To redeem lift passes go to the ticket window and show your Ikon Pass, Ikon Base Pass or Ikon Session Pass to the local operators.

Travel to Andorra Ski Resorts?

The Andorran capital, Andorra la Vella, is a 3hr drive (210km) north of Barcelona Spain, and a similar distance south of Toulouse France.

The miniscule size of Andorra creates a perfect ski nation. Access lifts for both major ski resorts are a paltry distance from the centre of Andorra la Vella. The Vallnord resort gondola for the Pal sector leaves from La Massana 5km north of the capital, whilst the lengthy gondola from the town of Encamp to the Grandvalira ski resort is only 7km to the west.

Andorra’s mountain location precludes having an airport, so most visitors come into the country via the closest major airports at Barcelona (BCN) or Toulouse (TLS). Driving to Andorra from France via Ax Les Thermes can be nightmarish when the road is ice covered. We recommend Barcelona as the best flight point of entry to get to Andorra via Spain but note rental cars at Barcelona only come with snow chains on request - they have no AWD, 4WD or winterised vehicles.

Similarly, railway does not penetrate its borders. A railway station at L'Hospitalet-près-l'Andorre in France is only 12km from Andorra via the mountain pass at Pas de la Casa. The village at Pas de la Casa is conveniently the eastern base area of the Grandvalira ski resort. The L'Hospitalet-près-l'Andorre station provides the best rail access to Andorra.

Groups of skiers will probably find a private shuttle transfer better value (cost/time) than a bus when transferring to Andorra from either France or Spain. A range of vehicles can get even the largest groups & their ski gear into Andorra quickly & efficiently.

Search & book all private transfers to Andorra.

Regular bus services from the airports and railway station connect Andorra to the rest of the Europe. There are some good value bus ticket options particularly from Barcelona, but the reality they are difficult to manage.

Search & book Barcelona to Andorra bus tickets.

Andorra Accommodation

Decisions about where to stay when skiing Andorra largely revolve around two questions, near the ski lifts or in the capital?

The capital Andorra la Vella is midway between both the major ski areas and is a convenient base if intending to do an Andorran ski safari.

Search & book all Andorra la Vella Accommodation.

If deciding against staying in the capital, the ski resorts of Pal Arinsal, Ordino Arcalis & Grandvalira have a feast of hotels & apartment options.

Reasons to Ski Andorra

Andorra provides a diverse ski experience in a compact, tourist friendly area at fabulous prices. The snow in Andorra can be good when the Alps is struggling but can also be somewhat boom & bust throughout a season. If keen on skiing or riding the off-piste or backcountry, it is always worth checking out the forecast & reports before heading there. If the snow isn't great you can always go shopping tax free and spend all the money you saved on coming to this excellent value skiing destination.

The Powderhounds visited Andorra in 2020. We had a confuzzling experience in a place that is an absolute utopian fantasyland. Would you like a complimentary hip flask of vodka with that! Read our reviews of each Andorran ski resort via the relevant overview pages.
