Points North Heli Skiing Alaska

The term “powder hound” refers to people who absolutely love to ski or snowboard powder, and the word originated because as hounds they are great at sniffing out and hunting down the powder. When heli skiing in Alaska however, powder hounds won’t just be sniffing the powder, they’ll be snorting powder (the snow kind!) and perhaps even inhaling it! The deep Alaska powder is one of the most addictive drugs on earth!

At Points North Heli Skiing, you can ride all the virgin powder you want. The super long runs are likely to build up plenty of lactic acid in the legs, and generate a huge smile on your dial.

Points North is a highly reputable operator with an emphasis on the safety aspects of heli skiing. Points North are proudly only one of three Alaska heli skiing operators that are members of the Heli Ski US Association, which requires high standards of safety to be reached.

If you’re a skiing or snowboarding fiend that relentlessly pursues fresh powder above all else, then Points North is for you. With over 20 metres of snowfall annually and an abundance of heliski terrain, PNH is highly likely to get an 11 out of 10 as a skiing or boarding experience.

When Does Points North Heli Skiing Operate?

The Points North season starts in mid February and goes until late April. Considering the Alaska heli skiing season is rather short, it’s very wise to book your heli trip early.

The giant weather maker of the Gulf of Alaska brings all the fabulous snow via storms. Unfortunately snow doesn’t fall from blue skies, so it’s not surprising that Alaskan heli skiing has lots of no fly days. An average week consists of 2-3 fly days, which is why the Points North pricing structure works well. If you’re lucky enough to fly every day, you can choose to pay for more heli flight hours.

Where is Points North Heli Skiing Located?

The heli skiing is within the dramatic Chugach Mountains, with Points North having exclusive access to the south-eastern side of the range.

Points North is based near the town of Cordova AK, which is 30 miles southeast of Valdez as the crow flies. Cordova is situated on the southeast corner of Prince William Sound, and accessible only by ferry or plane. Alaska Airlines flies into Cordova twice daily from Anchorage (28 minute flight) and Seattle (3 hour flight). The PNH staff provide transport between the Cordova airport and the lodge.

Terrain & Snow

Points North has access to a massive 2,000 square miles of terrain and they don’t have to share this with any other heli skiing operators. The dramatically beautiful terrain is heavily glaciated and has lots of spectacular peaks. The terrain is treeless and runs span from about 3,000 to 4,000 feet of vertical on average.

The Chugach terrain has a world renowned reputation for really scary extreme faces. Just watching a Warren Miller movie is enough to make your armpits really sweaty (or get you overly excited!!). However the Chugach Mountains and Points North are not exactly as they are portrayed on Warren Miller. Sure when conditions permit, experts can tackle the super steeps, but at the other end of the spectrum, PNH also has lots of terrain for strong intermediates. So you don’t have to be a stunt skier or boarder to go heli skiing with Points North, especially if you’ve got a long board or big fat powder skis.

One aspect that sets Points North apart from other Alaska heli skiing operators is that they have 3 helicopters, so they can really group different guests according to ability. The chances are slim of being stuck with people that are way above or below your ability level or desire for speed.

And the most important facet of Points North heli skiing is the snow! Make sure you close up any zips in your jacket including the ones under your arms, because the Chugach Mountains receive over 20 metres of snow annually. That’s likely to get a powderhound’s tail wagging!

My good friend Scott and I were lucky enough to find the crew from Points North for our 40th birthday trip. Approaching mid-life crisis, we needed something to challenge us and push the envelope a bit. Well…we found it! I’m now 54, and I look back on our trip to the Chugach regularly, with the fondest of memories. It challenged us in so many ways and it is, without question, one of the best trips of my life. The Points North Team is absolutely incredible and made sure that we were safe at every turn, while experiencing some of the best terrain on earth. THANK YOU!!

Incredible Heli & AK Experience

PNH is comprised of dedicated and knowledgeable guides, pilots and crew members, most of which have been there over a decade. Their credibility is obvious the second you land.

We arrived in the midst of a huge storm that put 4+ feet of new in the zone that was followed by 3 consecutive clear fly days then 3 consecutive 'down' days. Don't worry about down days, there's plenty to do. You can hit up Mt. Eyak, kayak, tour, hike, sauna, jump in the water or go into town which has a nice café, bars and a great little museum. The meals are incredible, they handle every type of dietary restriction, and it's BYOB from the nearby liquor store. The lodge is quiet, nice and clean with decent WiFi.

Three main things to know about Heli skiing that is important to know before signing up: 1) Weather and snow conditions dictate where you can go, so you may not get to the steeps 2) First timers ability will be observed to see what you can handle, so don't expect the goods right out of the gate 3) You will be on terrain suitable to the lowest ability member in your group, so the best option is to sign up with three others at your level. As a single, I really appreciated PNH putting me in an appropriate group.

Bottom line, don't wait, sign up. You will end up like the majority of people that go to PNH in that will sign up for more.

PNH-Life long memories and friends

Far and above one the best weeks of my life. Flash backs to this experience nearly daily . Kevin and Jess have build world class operation and platform on every level. Beyond the epic heli skiing I have made some life long friends, connections and networking.

I was in British Columbia and Alberta for about 10 days skiing at various resorts, side country lines, and touring off Rogers pass. I was at the bar after skiing at sunshine Village, and I just so happen to walk by and see a guy with a PNH hat on. I naturally went and talked to him, turns out it’s an old friend of Jess and Kevin.
We got to talking and turns out we have other mutual friends! We exchange contact, and then met up in Revelstoke BC for a ski touring and skied some absolutely amazing lines in cold smoke powder and stable conditions. He really knew this area well and I was grateful to link up with him and have a solid ski partner. It really made my trip in so many ways, and it all started with a connection from the PNH network! Thank you guys so much for all that you do for the skiing world in North America. Even after the heli a trip is over you’re still enabling good times!

Every Day is the Best Day of Your Life

What we had dreamed would be a once in a lifetime trip might now need to happen every year. I am not exaggerating when I say that every day I spent at PNH was the best day of my life. They just kept getting better! My (now) husband and I decided kind of on a whim that we wanted to get married and everyone went above and beyond to make sure that we were able to run courthouse errands and town and to make our little ceremony in the zone the most amazing experience of our lives.

The skiing, the people, the guides, the sauna, the adventures, it was all so perfect. I knew that the skiing would be amazing, but I was not expecting how quickly all of the people around me would feel like family and how truly at home I would feel at the lodge. This was by far the most extravagant trip we have been on and we've been scheming since we left how we'll be able to make it work again year after year.

"The Pilots"
I had the good fortune to be a part of an 8 person party at PNH in March 2021. We were a group of mostly airline pilot friends who experienced with me one of my lifetime goals. We had blue bird weather and although we didn't expect to get more than a couple days due to weather, and although the guides seemed a little worried about scarce powder, we ended up crushing it with 4... YES 4... epic days. It just kept getting better and better culminating in THE BEST OF EVERYTHING - weather, terrain, snow and friendship. We had an experience of a lifetime and I would highly recommend PNH and it's guides to anyone looking for an eye-popping, jaw-dropping crazy gorgeous Heli experience.

Big Mountain Slaying

Had an incredible experience at PNH. There is a reason they are the industry leader of Alaskan Heliskiing. We arrived on 3/20/21 and for year of covid complicating all things, they did a great job of making sure that everyone was safe and provided helpful information to mange the complexities of travel.
It is a bigger operation than most with the ability to fly 3 birds, this give you the best opportunity to continually do laps without having to wait for a Heli in the field. We were partnered up with Aaron D. who was an incredible guide, not only in the filed but at the lodge as well. He ate breakfast and dinner with us every day and provided great information for weather, terrain or what to do on a down day.
We hit a dry window of weather that was great for flying, but no new snow. That didn't matter because we were able to tap into all of the stashes and get fresh lines for 3+days of riding. Aaron was incredible at communicating in the field and put us on some of the most incredible lines I have ever done. We rode everything from huge glaciated fields with blue icebergs sticking out, to incredibly steep 2000' couloirs. The best of all is that its a family run business and you feel part of the family. they are looking out for your safety and making sure that you have a great time.
I loved every minute of it and can't wait to go back.

I think I have only written 2 or 3 reviews ever for anything but Points North and the trip we had is deserving of my time to share my experience. For my son's high school graduation trip we decided to go heli-skiing. After basically having the end of his junior year and all of his senior year get canceled because of Covid we wanted to do something incredible and Points North fulfilled every dream we could imagine. We are good advanced Colorado skiers but not expert by any means. Jessica gave us great advice in preparation as this was our first heli-rodeo. From start to finish they made everything easy (pickup at the airport, gear, food, logistics, training, etc). We were paired up with our group and assigned our favorite guide ever, Jason. The week started with snow so we logged a day at Mount Eyak and had a blast. Our guide was seriously the best. An expert at what he does, Jason was an all around good guy that wanted us to experience as much as possible while we were there. We felt safe as he was experienced and took our safety and the conditions seriously. He took us on a kayak trip while we were waiting for the weather to break. We were fortunate and had blue bird days of skiing Tuesday afternoon through Friday. Unbelievable is an understatement. We skied the coolest stuff. Jason kept us safe but also pushed us as well, skiing terrain I never thought we could handle. The lodge was super clean and comfortable with amazing views. Meals were outstanding and it was just fun to hang out and eat there together in the lodge listening to glory stories of the day. The owners are awesome and genuinely want you to have a great time. We felt that our skiing options were limitless; never seeing any other operations which is a real advantage for their location as they are the only show around for that whole area of the Chugach. For a father/son senior trip we could not have picked better. Thank you PNH!

Wow. I had wanted to ride in Alaska for years, after growing up watching videos of all my snow heroes dropping lines surrounded by fluffy spray. So I was expecting all of that. And PNH didn’t disappoint. What I wasn’t expecting was the beauty, tranquility and vastness. The connection I would make with my guide. Or the number of friends I would make over the week. The week was life affirming and I cannot recommend spending a week with PNH highly enough.

I’ve come up to PNH two years and simply put, it is fantastic! Great vibe that starts at the top with Quinner and Jess; just a bunch of genuine, like-minded people who want to ride the best terrain on the planet. It’s no surprise why they have such a high client return rate and low guide turnover. Plus, the new terrain they have access to is phenomenal! If you are fortunate enough to get up to Alaska, I’d highly recommend PNH…they are the best!

I cannot speak highly enough about the experience I had PNH. Kevin and Jessica are some of the nicest and most dedicated people I’ve ever met. Their goal is to make sure you have the best days you’ve ever experienced on your skis or snowboard, and they definitely hit that mark for me. The focus is on terrain choice and snow quality .vs powder harvesting and super posh accommodations. I really appreciate that. The staff is also extremely educated and super fun to hang out with after the heli is shut down for the day. You just want to support these people after being around them. I’ll be back every season from now on!

I can't believe it took me this long to finally make out to ski with great folks at PNH. After riding all over the US, Europe, NZ and Japan and Heliskiing Whistler, NZ, BC and the lower 48 the holy grail for me was riding the big lines of Alaska. I've been well aware of PNH from all their appearances in Warren Miller films and upon meeting Jess and Kevin at the SF showing there was no question which operator I'd go with for my first AK heli experience. I'm glad to report that the trip exceeded all my expectations and I couldn't ask for any better staff, guides, pilots and other guests to ski, ride and hang out with.

The EPIC lines that you see in the films and have heard about were the highlight of the experience for me and the terrain and scenery are unmatched by anything else I've ever ridden. I really have to hand it to our guide Tino and the rest of the guiding team for finding great lines and better than expected snow quality given it had not snowed for the past 8 -10 days while we were there. The pilots are fantastic and it was great to see how interactive they are with the guides in choosing the runs and landing spots. There certainly are runs that will send chills up your spine but they are only a part of what PNH and Cordova have to offer. The guides were great at assessing the skills and desires of each group and went above and beyond to find the right fit for everyone and ensure that every day in the mountains lived up to the 'best day skiing ever.'

Huge kudos to Jess and Kevin and the entire PNH team. What you guys do is awesome and should be on every heli skiers bucket list!

After being fortunate enough to visit most of the Western US to ride- After living in Tahoe and numerous trips to Canada- After watching every ski hill get so corporate and so crowded- I finally made it once again up to Ak to visit Jess and Kevin in Cordova. MAN! it sure is nice to go somewhere (last visit '05) and see the wild staying wild. The food and lodging here is so great. The lodge is a now defunct salmon cannery, so you get the new with the historic. There is no questioning the guides and the terrain - first rate. There's no questioning the Helis - AStars - first rate. There just is no questioning the hang and feel of Points North - its so unique... so special. I hope you get the chance to go spend a week in The Chugach. If you are considering a dream trip - don't go anywhere else. you WILL return to your normal life and look back wondering "did I really DO that?!??" and your pictures and memory will answer you with a resounding "HELL YEAH! I DID do that."

Going to Alaska for me was a once in a life time trip, and I chose Points North to take care of it, the best decision I ever made. This operation is mind blowing. Jumping in a heli, only 35 meters from where you sat down for breakfast, and 15 minutes later being dropped into an endless expanse of terrain, catering for anyone. From glacier cruises to 65 degree sends, its all there. Blower powder and the best turns you may ever make. But what makes Points North special is so much more than the skiing. It’s all about the team.

The staff here are some of the most welcoming folk I have ever encountered on the freeski scene and they make your trip what it is. Owners Jess and Kevin’s charm is so integral to this operation. Kevin is totally honest about the conditions on offer and the weather incoming, (you are at mercy of the weather in the Chugach, we flew 3 days out of 6). He never shies away on the down days in embarrassment, he stands up and gets you stoked on what to come. Jess is warming and willing to help in any situation. My guide, Tino, was awesome. At no point did he make me inferior, like many guides do by stamping their authority, he involved our group in our line planning and was even kind enough to get me in his snow pits and teach me some new information on stability. Even the kitchen staff, whilst catering for over 40 every evening, were happy to trade stories and stoke the stoke. (On this subject the food is ace, good home cooking, exactly what one needs). And finally, this environment was a brilliant catalyst for making buddies with the other guests.

It sounds cliché, but these guys really do treat you like family. I arrived as a lone skier in AK and I left feeling part of an amazing team, with friends that I will hopefully ski with forever. If you want 5 star service whilst being treated like royalty, Points North is not for you. But if you want to feel like part of a genuine freeski pilgrimag, sign yourself up. This was meant to be a once in a life time trip, but I am already planning how to get back. Life will never be the same.

PHN - the best AK big mountain experience you can get

        Michael Dickson
        11/04/2019
Can't say enough good things about PNH - this is truely a home for those who want a genuine big mountain, extreme AK experience with a crew of professionals who value safety and work damn hard to get you the experience of AK that they all know and love.
PNH crew, atmosphere and setup are geared towards skiers/boarders who are in it for the skiing/riding - value is all about heli time, with the lodging setup like the club skiing camp style we have all grown up with (if you want the champagne, caviar and hot tubs then you can get that elsewhere). That said - the Orca Lodge gets better every year, with a new coffee shop this year that is actually awesome!
Nothing comes without risk of course - and main one is the weather gods. I have been to PNH 8 times, and only twice did I not use all of my heli time, and 3 years I have paid for extra time. I have been there in all types of conditions and have still loved it out there in the mountains even when conditions are 'variable!' and the blower pow and stable steeps are not running.
Guides and team are super qualified and professional - I have skied with 6 different guides and all have been excellent, super safe, confident and truly stoked to get you into things that push your limits if thats what you want and smash some fun laps of pow as well.
Tips - go with a group of 4 of similar ability who want to ski the same stuff as you, then you form your own heli group; If you can - go for 2 weeks and you get a bigger weather window; leave on the late flight from Cordova as then you can ski on Satdy if the weather is on.

Huge thanks to Kevin & Jess and all the team - Seeya next year!

        World Class Operation

        Ryan Pond
        10/04/2019
This is a World Class Operation!!! This place is for serious riders who care more about the terrain they are riding than the comfort of their beds. (though the beds are very comfortable, and the food is excellent,)

Everything about this operation from the vibe around the Lodge, to the Heli's being parked 150 feet away breeds enthusiasm for the event for which you booked your trip, riding big, steep, beautiful, mountains, covered in deep deep powder, guided by pro's who are as stoked as you to share the days events over beers when the sun goes down.

As anybody who loves the mountains knows, Mother Nature always has her say. That's true anywhere you go. But when Mother Nature is agreeable, this is as good as it gets! I've booked heli trips with other operations but never skied lines like the ones with PNH. I will be returning for years to come. Thanks Jess & Kevin !!!

The team at PNH are total pro's in every respect. Firstly, they are totally committed to safety both in terms of their decision to fly and the work the guides do to evaluate the terrain and snow stability once you are out there. Secondly, they are expert in evaluating your skill level and being able to build your confidence and then push you into challenging terrain to max the thrill factor. Finally, Kevin, Jess and all the crew are a family - they represent the authentic Alaska heli-ski experience. In terms of skill level, I think expert riders will get the most out of it as you have to be prepared for variable Alaska weather and snow conditions. Having said that, we had 4 days of perfect conditions, which was insane.
        It will blow your mind.

I have been fortunate to ride Points North Heli in Cordova and many other places in AK and around the globe. Points North is my hands down favorite based on Terrain, Guides, Heli's, Safety, Fun, Down day activities and Overall Experience. Any Heli trip is contingent upon weather but when the weather aligns it is magical with 3-4 A Star Heli's and world renowned guides and pilots accessing the Chugach Range you turns and memories are sure to be life changing. Mount Eyak is nearby on down days, or a blue ice cave and climb, a massage or sauna with an ocean view. The food and lodging is good but this in Not Wiggley World and if you order Crab at the Reluctant Fisherman you can excel on all level. The town of Cordova AK is a drinking town with a fishing problem rich in nature, fish, crab, culture, and EPIC TURNS! I suggest a 2 week trip in Late March or Early April. There rental gear and avalanche safety and knowledge is also top notch. Points North in Cordova AK is what video's and dreams are made of.

Just want to say thanks’ for the fantastic time our group ( Randell, Simon , Jeremy and Gary ) had on our week 7 trip to Points North. One of the best holidays I have had ( and I have had some good ones! ) Great professionally run operation with that true laid back, rustic Alaskan charm. All your staff very helpful and put in % 110 effort to accommodate our needs and make our time in Cordova something we will be talking about around the camp fire in years to come. A special thanks to big Jimmbo for keeping us safe, finding great lines and telling us of some of his awesome life experiences! The charging bear story is being told everywhere back here!!! Hope the rest of the season goes well for everyone.

Most Epic & Thrilling Adventure Ever!

PNH is a must for any skiing enthusiast! This was the paramount heli-skiing experience, and it will not be our last with PNH. Not only did my group have a phenomenal time on the mountains, the entire staff – especially: Jessica and our guide, Jim, more than met our expectations - wants and needs.

We were apprehensive about the weather being an issue, but were reassured that the smartphone weather app does not apply to the mountains of Alaska! It was projected to rain the whole week we were scheduled. Fortunately enough, the weather was nothing less than superb through the entire week although it did not appear it would be on a daily basis. As they stated and now, we believe the weather conditions change on an hourly basis.

The staff was beyond dedicated to making sure we got our money’s worth. Jim was with us our entire week on the mountain, glaciers and in the forest. His positivity, outgoing personality, and considerate mind set, made the trip a truly memorable and enjoyable one. Because he continuously asked our expectations of the day, he was able to optimize our time on, and off the mountains.

Days that we chose not to heli ski were jammed packed with other Alaskan adventures. We had the opportunity to hike a glacier, explored a forest that resembled the Lord of the Rings movie set, kayaked with a sea full of otters, and visited the residential side of Cordova where we were greeted with opened arms and delicious food!

This was the most EPIC and THRILLING adventure I have ever been on, and I cannot wait to start planning next years vacation!

From the moment I arrived at Cordova Airport and was met by the PNH team I knew I was in for the adventure I was seeking. The entire staff including the guides (camp counselors as I liked to call them), office and kitchen crew couldn't have been more accommodating as they took their jobs serious all the while maintaining a cool and pleasant vibe. They know how to handle the various personalities they encounter.

This was my first time heli boarding and I can't imagine doing it in a better place than the Chugash Mountains and with the PNH team. The degree of difficulty of the runs range from intermediate cruisers to "you're out of your mind" steeps. On the first day on the mountain the guides will put you on generally less difficult runs to get a feel of your ability and then, without a doubt they challenge you to dig deep and ride/ski terrain outside your comfort zone. This is why I came to Alaska, to be challenged.

The weather cooperated and we got all of our fly time in. By the end of the week and on my last run I couldn't help but think of my favorite quote from the famous Dr. Seuss.

"If you never did, you should, because these things are fun and fun is good"

        The ultimate heliski experience.

I've been skiing and continue to ski with a lot of heliski operators in many countries. PNH is the one I am always coming back. The helicopters are parked just outside your room, by the sea, guarded by eagles and otters. The food is amazing (I'm french, I don't say that often), the all team makes you feel you are part of the family. It is a really nice place to wait for the weather to open.
Once the weather opens, it is getting crazy ! The terrain is unbelievable, you don't know where to look, lines are everywhere.
The guides who know their backyard upside down, takes you to lines you didn't even dream off. The skiing is fantastic.

I'll be back to Cordova for the 5th times next february. As every time, I won't be on my own, many friends will join, and most of them have been there several times as well.

Watch out it is addictive !

If you want to go snowboarding in Alaska using helicopters (and, yes, you do), then PNH is about the most professional and capable operation you could imagine.

No messing about. The helicopters are parked between the eating room, the gum, and the homemade sauna.

This place is for people who want to ride mountains. No fancy waiters and manicures. You'll have your food served by legendary ski guides, and will probably have bitten off your nails looking down some of the lines anyway.

        Book it.

Jessie's Spine - last run of the week
This was trip no. 3 to AK for me and no. 2 at PNH. High expectations and it did not disappoint. Mother Nature finally cooperated with blue skies, perfect temp and no wind at the end of the week (PS...for first time AK heli skiers, you need to be patient in terms of weather expectations - expect downs days; that's just the way it is). I went solo, and was put in a strong group of experienced AK skiers; we had a super time! Awesome guide Jason Bilek: safety is #1, great attitude, high energy and couldn't be friendlier. Snow as wonderful quality, and we got access to a full range of slopes. The steeper ones definitely got the juices flowing (attaching photo of Jessie's Spine, our last run of the week - whoohoo). No doubt that AK offers skiable terrain that simply isn't possible in Cdn or US rockies. Be ready to be challenged!
Kevin and Jessica, the owners, are hands on and set a great tone for the whole team at PNH. Intimate lodge is more 'camp like' but totally good (this ain't Blue River). All staff are friendly and high energy. Lots to do on down days: glacier hikes, kayaking, river exploring, etc. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

Simply the best skiing experience I have ever had. Two years in a row. PNH remains the most integrity-driven, thorough, friendly, professional, tightly organized and best-guided skiing operation I've ever visited...period. If your skiing is as important to you as it is to me...whether it's getting on the steepest, deepest rowdiest lines you've ever skied or cruising endless 4000 vertical-foot blower pow (or even perfect spring corn)...PNH has what you're looking for. Even with all the expectations that went along with 20 years of dreaming about finally getting to Alaska, PNH has consistently exceeded them all. In the end though, what truly distinguishes Points North Heli-Adventures from any other op I've ever visited (I've been to ops in Utah, Colorado, Whistler, the BC interior, France and Italy) is that it's about much more than just skiing; it's about community and family. Thanks to my time at PNH, Kevin, Jessica, the guides, the kitchen crew, support staff and everyone else have become a big part of my ski family. Love you guys and see you again soon.

Very cool operation - amazing location - excellent guides - totally dialed in - no shortage of food at meal times - ridiculous terrain. First time in a helicopter for me and thus first time heli-skiing - therefore I cannot compare but I cannot imagine that you will find terrain as challenging and exhilarating anywhere else. That being said, it shouldn't frighten you off - they manage their groups with care and a total focus on safety. Highly recommended.

PNH is where I go to fulfill my riding dreams and find new ones

        Nick Edmonds
        26/04/2017
PNH has exceeded my wildest expectations two years in a row and I fully expect that trend to continue (because after my first trip I decided I had to go back every year). It's simply the best-guided, best trained and equipped, and most welcoming mechanized backcountry operation I've ever been to. Their ability to deliver unforgettable experiences to clients of all ability levels year after year is unsurpassed. Everyone I've met there has left thrilled with their experience, amazed at how the guides and fellow guests they rode with helped them step up their skiing/riding game, and eager to return.

I could say there's no wilder, more beautiful, more exhilarating place to ride than Alaska (there isn't). I could say that there's no more amazing terrain than the Chugach whether you're looking for steep couloirs, near-vertical spines, or mellow ramps and fields of blower pow (if so I've never found it). I could say that there's nowhere on the planet with consistent snow quality as good as Alaska (I've looked all over the world). If you're looking into a heli-skiing trip to Alaska you probably know all that.

Alaska isn't just about the terrain though, it's about having a team capable of tackling all the lines you want (and some you may not know you want... yet). PNH attracts skiers and riders who take their skiing/riding seriously and the staff there are masters of putting together groups that work. Heli-skiing is a team sport and group dynamics are perhaps the most important element of an enjoyable trip. The people at PNH are the reason I keep coming back. There's a sense of community here, a sense of shared purpose, and an excitement that I've never found anywhere else. Kevin, Jessica, and the guides listen to their guests and really figure out what they're looking for, then deliver it in the most mind-blowing way possible whether it's cruising endless pow or dropping into rowdy lines that would (and have!) appeared on the cover of ski films. The pilots here are better than any I've ever ridden with and have repeatedly landed me on top of lines that I thought inaccessible.

This isn't a white-glove, cater to your every whim operation and I wouldn't have it any other way. The food is delicious, the accommodations are cozy and cool, the scenery is breathtaking, the hospitality is amazing, and you'll want for nothing... but if you pitch in to dig out some landings, crack a few beers on the deck with the staff, and if you're lucky take a few runs with the kitchen crew, office staff, and everyone else that makes this operation run you'll find a sense of camaraderie that's unlike any other operation. PNH is where I return to to push myself outside my comfort zone with people I trust unconditionally and to reconnect with a staff that's become part of my ski family. If your mission is unbelievable skiing/riding first and foremost you'll find people at PNH that will take you there and slay it with you.

The best skiing available, hands down

        Rufus Davis
        25/04/2017
I have heli-skied elsewhere, in addition to skiing at about 90 ski areas in N. America and Europe, and this place pretty much blows away all the other skiing I have done. I could write for pages about how great PNH is and what the experience meant to me (hint: a lot), but if you value great skiing and are committed to having the best possible experience (and I do literally mean best possible), then this is the place for you.

My group got to ski everything we wanted (and more), which meant skiing extremely steep and technical terrain, but based on what I saw and heard from other groups you can certainly go to PNH and have a great time skiing mellower terrain (it is certainly available). I honestly believe that any strong intermediate skier would have an amazing heli-ski experience, and if you are the type of skier who has always wanted to experience what Alaska's Chugach range offers then there is no substitute for PNH.

With the above in mind, I would caution that if your priority is luxe lodging and ski valets, PNH is probably not for you. But if you are a skier and want to among other committed skiers skiing the world's best mountains in fantastic snow, well, you shouldn't think twice. It took me many years to get to Alaska to ski PNH, and now I'm sitting here wondering why I didn't pull the trigger years ago. I know I will be back as soon as I can possibly figure out a way.

I have been going to PNH for 18 years now. I start to guide for them 17 years ago. I bring my own groups to this amazing venue for a reason. Not just the fact we may get to fly into the some of the most amazing mountains on the planet but also because of the team at PNH. The owners of the operation Kevin and Jessica have a wonderful ability to put together the most amazing staff. From Guides to Kitchen this team is family and it reflects into the operation. Probably the number one reason I go back to enjoy the skiing.

        What a week

        Wilson Korol
        24/04/2017
What a trip. I have been dreaming of heli skiing in Alaska for about 20 years, every since seeing my first ski videos at a wee lad. Thankfully, I got to fulfill that dream this year at Points North Heli-Adventures. The trip exceeded my very high expectations.

From my inquiry into a last minute spot for the 2017 season (which I was lucky to get, these spots sell out fast!), through booking and my prep back home, PNH delivered.

Once I arrived at Cordova, it was living a dream for a week. I was traveling solo and got placed in a group for the week that was a great match for my skiing ability. And it was not just our group that had a good match, it seemed like every group in our week had a nice dynamic and wanted the same kind of skiing. For my group, we all had the same objectives and the group dynamic was really special. It has all held together by our guide, who hit the perfect balance of being our friend and our boss.

About that skiing, why I came 3,500 miles from the East Coast. It was simply put the best skiing I have ever done. The snow was great, especially for the last week of the season. We skied deep, winter powder on steep north facing slopes. We also skied long corn runs down to various glaciers. I had never been in a heli before, and it really is a superlative way to access terrain unlike any I have skied in the lower 48 and in Europe.

The accommodations were ideal; it hit the ski vibe that made me feel right at home. My room had a vie of the sound, islands in the middle ground and then snow capped peaks. Even got to see the Northern Lights for the first time. The food was excellent; my favorite meal was the fresh Alaskan salmon. If you are thinking of making the trip to Alaska, I can’t recommend PNH more highly. I know I will be making a return trip in coming years.

Thank you PNH, Jess, & Kevin for a most excellent experience! The snowboarding was the best ever; endless blower pow, bluebird skies, perfect weather, best three days of my life. We were all stoked out of our minds. Our guide, Bilek, and our pilot Ryan, put us on the best snow and burly lines keeping us amped up and highly adrenalated. The whole staff is awesome. The vibe was chill and the scenery was absolutely georgeous. This heli-boarding in the Chugach stuff is the sickest, raddest, gnarliest, most amazing thing I've ever done.

The terrain is insane, steep and a blast. Doing "laps" on great snow in the wide open world of the Chugach Mountains is beyond surreal. If you go just make sure you take a moment to take it all in.

The owners and guides are outstanding; the guides know how to push you and get the best from you. And they are also maniacally focused on safety. They have guide meetings twice daily -- once before they go out and once when they come back. They have you practice the important aspects of safety, before you ever go out. If you need to rent gear, their Volkl gear is great. The ski's i got were perfect for me.

I know nothing of Helicopters, so I can't tell you how great they are. But I am told they're phenomenal. The pilots are nothing short of being magicians and can land on a stick -- literally.

The place is as authentic as an experience can be. The dining hall is everything you want and nothing more. Ping pong, fusball, byob from town and just have a blast hanging out before, during and after meals.

The cook staff goes out of their way to meet your dietary needs. If you are gluten sensitive, they work hard to meet your needs. We brought our own bread anyway, but didn't finish it because we had plenty of options (but bring some of your own stuff (you'll want to snack or have gluten free bars on the mountain, etc). Breakfasts are classic ski morning breakfasts. The bag lunches are just enough but not too much to eat on the mountain, and every dinner is pretty hardy. I'd like more fish, but that's splitting hairs at this point.

The Orca Lodge which is right there on the grounds faces the beautiful river and mountains. Bald Eagles are pretty much available for a classic pose for your picture and otters play in the river all day. This is not the ritz. But it's perfect in it's own way.

When you're not skiing -- conditions can be variable and windy sometimes -- you can hike the sheridan glacier or take a hike through the woods in some crazy interesting terrain.

While there, I met some really interesting other guests and guides. Some world famous.

And if you're lucky, you'll catch the northern lights. They were there for us, we just didn't wake up to see them. Too bad -- you can see them on their facebook page.

This is not a once in a lifetime experience -- though for me it probably is. I went with my son on our annual trip -- he'll be back -- there is terrain there he wants to go after and he's only 27. If you think you're too old. think again, I'm 58 and there are others who are older. And there are guests who have been coming back every year for a decade or more.

The owner, Kevin and Jessica are real people; authentic; and their kids are precious. It is impossible to believe how well the operation runs and all of the details they care for.

Its expensive, and you'll end up getting travel insurance if you're smart. So get in shape before you go so you can take full advantage of the time out on the mountain.

        Thanks to Points North Heli

Hard to ski a point much further north than this

I skied with Points North in February 2011. There are a few heliski companies operating in Alaska, but these guys are the only ones operating from Cordova and have a vast area to themselves in the Chugach mountains. They run the business from a converted salmon cannery in Prince William Sound, a short drive from Cordova and its airport.

When I was there it was early in their season. They don't start skiing until the end of February and continue into April. For the week preceding my week of skiing, there had been high winds and only a single snow fall. There was no snow for the entire week (or the week after evidently). This is unusual and I heard from the guides and other return skiers that it is more common to be inundated with snow and have a few no fly days followed by unbelievable skiing in dry, deep snow. During my week there was only one no fly day, due to high winds. Every day was bluebird. That meant a lot of flying time, but the conditions were pretty challenging. Terrain that would be epic with good snow was difficult to negotiate with unpredictable crust and ice.

That sounds disappointing, but it definitely wasn't. The Chugach mountains are stunning. Most of the skiing we did was runs in the alpine into glacier valleys above the tree line. From the peaks there are mountains stretching into the distance as far as you can see. Much of the skiing is in other worldly settings, like skiing on an alien planet.

There is definitely the terrain here to suit the most hard core extreme skier and the opportunity to ski it with Points North, but there was no way we could push it in the snow conditions we had. As it was, the one or two "no fall" slopes we skied were challenging enough for me! I think, that with the usual snow this location gets, it would be one of the best ski destinations in the world and even with poor snow, it is still an amazing week of skiing.

The lodge lies in Prince William Sound and the local waters are full of sea otters. There are huge eagles in the woods above the water front road and moose as well. Staying here, for this first time visitor to Alaska, felt like being in the middle of a wildlife documentary. Cordova is not exactly a hotbed ski town, but the locals are interesting to talk to and friendly. The town was badly affected by the Exxon Valdez disaster and has an interesting history.

This is a place to ski in the tracks of some skiing greats. It is a favourite haunt of Warren Miller and his crew. Jessica and Kevin are both well known skiers as are several of their guides. This place attracts serious skiers and boarders from everywhere and most of the other clients were much better skiers than me!

Despite these credentials the rates for PNH are very competitive compared to heliskiing at some other North American destinations. Getting to and from Cordova is pretty easy from North America or Canada. This is definitely one destination to put on the skiing bucket list.

PNH is an all encompassing company. From the owners to the guides and especially the kitchen staff (who keep you fed and fat). It really does do it all.

And the skiing/riding?? Truly the best in the world. If you want it, PNH will give it to you!

There is something for everyone here. You don't have to be a pro, you just have to be able to navigate the chest deep powder and the guides will do the rest for you. Making sure that you come home safely is their number one priority.

As Quinner says "This is disneyland on steroids"...

DO IT!! You wont regret it...

I'm going again in 2011. This will be my 4th year of tearin' up the Chugach...
