Could have been better

08/03/2025
Take into account this review is one person and one moment in time with this particular heli outfit. The snow pack was a high avalanche risk and also I suspect I got food poisoning from the lodge somehow during my trip. Both are skewing my recommendations into the negative, but this is my honest review of the lodge and experience overall.

I'll start off with saying that I really like the fact that they handle the charter flights to the lodge in and out of Vancouver. That’s pretty convenient and makes for a smooth booking overall. All you have to worry about is your flights to/from Vancouver and then if you stay a night on the front/back end of the trip to make travel more flexible. The Pantheon lodge itself was rustic but nice. Several of the outbuildings are recently renovated and the 9 guests stay in a mix of the outbuildings and the main lodge. It was pretty warm in the valley while I was there and it was muddy walking around the buildings so it’s helpful if you have slip on boots. The staff is extremely nice and responsive at the lodge. By far the best service I’ve had at a heli lodge. It’s a small group experience at the lodge I was at (Pantheon) so you get to know all the guests and most of the staff. You have two guides and one Bell 212 helicopter at your disposal and at this time they’re doing “unlimited vertical”. Unfortunately the snow pack had a high avalanche risk for several weeks while I was there so we were stuck on easier lower risk terrain. And we still set off two small slides on day one! The scenery is fantastic, however, once you fly out of the valley. My one issue with the flying is that even on a blue bird day we barely got in more than 14k vertical feet and usually much less. We had a lot of flight time and frequently had to wait for the heli to shut down at the top rather than quickly depart and keep moving. Generally the overall pace was a bit slow for my liking. Compared to other trips this was unusual to me and with other outfitters I’ve used I’ve easily gotten 30-35k vertical on a blue bird day even with 3 groups sharing a Bell 212. Now that many operators are also doing “unlimited vertical” maybe they all slow down overall, time will tell. But our group didn’t even come close to our vertical guaranteed minimum in 5 days. They do offer a small amount back at the end but I’m sure everyone would rather spend it and get over the vertical.
Now as for the suspected food poisoning I got which knocked me out for a full day plus kind of ruined the food/drink experience for the rest of the trip. Two of us had similar symptoms and while we did recover mostly by the next day it still very much dampened the trip overall for me. Obviously I mentioned it to staff during and afterwards, but didn’t get much other than an apology. The lodge also lacked basic medical gear like thermo/pulsox/bp cuff. I got offered a meat thermometer to take my temp and that was about the extent of it. Anything can surely happen anywhere, I get that. At this price point I certainly was expecting a stronger response to be honest. I’m not blaming the chefs or any staff as I’m sure they’re well trained in all things food safety. But clearly something went wrong when 2 out of 9 people in close quarters had the same GI symptoms. I would have liked a bit more than an apology from a customer service rep after the fact which only came after I initiated an email upon returning home. Nobody reached out to me directly before or since other than the canned email to take a survey of my trip. It is close quarters all around so even a sickness could spread easily. Maybe there could be some better protocols in place when something happens not to mention better protocols to prevent such a thing from happening. The expectations are high when the costs are this high and my review is reflective of that.

We had amazing 3 days of skiing out of 4 and a half. (due to weather). The terrain was amazing and the snow really good. Everything was extremely well organized and the hangar facility at the airport was super convenient to get prepared before flying. The lodge is comfortable and the staff very friendly. The food has improved massively over last year so overall it was an amazing experience and I would recommend this operation without a doubt. The only worry is the weather, being close to the ocean brings a lot of snow but also a lot of clouds and rain sometimes. But that's out of our control obviously! Would be happy to return to Bella Coola in the near future!

Best Heli Skiing in Canada

Bella Coola was hands down one of the best heli-skiing trips I’ve ever done. The terrain is insane—huge bowls, steep lines, and perfect powder everywhere. The guides were top-notch, balancing safety with making sure we got the best runs possible.

The lodge itself is super comfortable, and the food was way beyond what you'd expect for a ski trip—every meal was incredible. The whole experience felt effortless, from the moment we arrived to the last run. Just pure, unfiltered fun in some of the most stunning mountains I’ve ever seen. Would go back in a second.

Bella Coola Heli Skiing is a topnotch operation! We had a fantastic trip with great terrain (and gorgeous), a knowledgeable, friendly guide, and delicious meals. The lodge and chalets felt more unique than a bigger lodge/hotel and taking off in the helicopter from what was basically our front yard was awesome!

Best first heli experience

I have never been heli skiing yet alone done much powder skiing, but the guides at Bella coola were insanely helpful and accommodating to help me hone my skills without slowing my group down. The practically private heli experience led to little downtime between runs which allowed for great vert accumulation. The staff at the lodge are the kindest, most attentive of any lodging I’ve been to. The rooms are so cozy and great made leaving very hard. Then on the terrain, you get deep in the Coastal Range which offers endless untouched runs and the endless views of the spectacular mountains leave you in awe! Hopefully able to save up again to return because what an amazing group of strangers that become friends and views / runs that cannot be beat!

Our heli-skiing trip to Bella Coola was nothing short of spectacular—perfect snow, bluebird days, and endless untouched lines made for unreal skiing conditions. The luxurious accommodations and incredibly welcoming staff made us feel right at home, adding to the overall magic of the experience. Every meal was a masterpiece, with gourmet food and top-tier drinks that kept us fueled and ready for each day’s adventure. This was, without a doubt, one of the coolest trips I’ve ever been on, and my group can say the same. After all, you can have friends on powder days if you're heli-skiing!

An Unforgettable Helicopter Skiing Adventure with Bella Coola

Dean Fenwick
03/03/2024
From the moment I set foot in Bella Coola for my helicopter skiing adventure, I knew I was in for an experience of a lifetime. It's not just the breathtaking scenery or the exhilarating ski runs that make this place special – it's the people.

The staff at Bella Coola Helicopter Skiing are truly first class. Every single person I encountered, from the ground crew to the technicians, played a pivotal role in creating an environment that was not only welcoming but also exuded professionalism and a deep commitment to safety.

A special shoutout to the guides – Steve, Pat, and Chelsey. Their expertise and knowledge of the terrain were apparent and took great care planning every morning. It was evident that they had every guest's best interests at heart and effectively managed challenging conditions with safety first and optimized skiing time.

Bella Coola has very experienced pilots. Our pilot, Chad, is amazing! Navigating through the mountains with such skill and precision, he played a crucial role in the whole experience. His proficiency added an extra layer of safety and confidence to our adventure.

An important aspect that all guests should understand about helicopter skiing is the unpredictability of the weather. Guest have a relatively short time here and we all want to ski as much as possible in the most ideal conditions. When weather isn't cooperating, the team at Bella Coola Helicopter Skiing never let this affect their top priority: the safety and well-being of their guests. Their ability to manage expectations and ensure safety in all conditions is highly commendable.

Despite the weather's whims, my experience was nothing short of fantastic. The balance between thrill-seeking and safety, the camaraderie among staff and guests, first class food, and the stunning backdrop of Bella Coola's landscape made this an unforgettable trip.

In conclusion, Bella Coola Helicopter Skiing isn't just a service; it's an experience crafted with care, expertise, and a warm, welcoming spirit. Whether you're a seasoned Heli-skier or a first-timer, you're in excellent hands with this team. I left with memories that will last a lifetime and a deep appreciation for the hard work and dedication of everyone involved.

I Highly recommended Bella Coola Heli Sports for anyone seeking an unparalleled skiing adventure!
