Fabulous Stay

Named the Adventure Hotel because when they did the renovations on this historic hotel they realised that they couldn’t put in an elevator, so they wanted to attract adventurous guests who didn’t mind climbing a couple of flights of stairs. It’s more than ideal for adventurous skiers and snowboarders who may not even notice there’s not an elevator!

The Adventure Hotel has been modernised and thoroughly renovated to the point where other than many walls with exposed brick, very few historic features have been retained. You don’t need to worry that this is an old and tired hotel – it’s rather funky!

It is a classic 3 star hotel, although the very friendly staff provide service levels higher than what you’d expect for a 3-star.

The central Nelson location was excellent and it was an easy walk to all the key restaurants and bars. Whilst there was a little bit of street noise on the Saturday night, it seemed that it was much quieter than what some of the hotels on Baker St experience. The bus stop to get to Whitewater was right out the front although we drove. One limitation was that there were only about 12 parking spots and they also allowed sports bar visitors to park there, leaving the option of paid parking out on the street from 9am. This was only a problem one night when we got back from skiing after 6pm, so generally it wouldn’t be an issue.

As advertised, our room wasn’t particularly large but incredibly functional and the small window offered nice views across the lake and mountains. The bed was very comfortable and sleep quality very good. One minor thing was that there was frosted glass on the bathroom door and no blind on the bathroom window, so bright street lights illuminated the room at night. The wifi in the room, and throughout the building, was very good.

The hotel was all encompassing with respect to dining and this is a huge plus for the hotel. We had breakfast a few times at the café: both grab and go and sit down fare. The coffee was good and the food choices reasonably diverse.

The sportsbar was very lively and had an abundance of TVs going. We dined in the quieter lounge adjacent to the main part of the sports bar. And the restaurant was absolutely amazing, with fabulous food, a great range of wine and cocktails, and very good service.

The hotel is a great place to stay and provides really good value and convenience.
