An Awesome Ski City

POWDERHOUNDS EUROPE
09/04/2019

We spent alot of time in & around Innsbruck during season 2019/20. Why? Simply because it is such an awesome city in its own right, but also because of its unparalleled access to flights, trains, buses & fully winterised rental cars, which in turn make it easy to reach a dizzying number of world-class ski resorts throughout Austria, Germany, northeast Italy & south east Switzerland.

We stayed in the old town at the sensational Hotel Weisses Rössl (a mere 600 years old!), in outlying villages like Goetzens & Oberperfuss, plus in a gorgeous chalet high above the city below Nordkette where we soaked up the early Spring sunshine in between some fantastic skiing. We were even visited by deer, squirrels, stoats & owls at the chalet.

Having traveled the length & breadth of the world for skiing, we still love coming back to Innsbruck & will continue to do so for many years to come.

Great city even without the close proximity to terrific ski resorts.
Do yourself a favour and place Innsbruck high on you list of ski towns to visit. Resorts are easily accessed from here and Innsbruck has more than enough to keep you occupied.
Visit the Schloss Ambras for a quality lunch in their cafe.
Walk the old town, enjoy the history and great coffee and cakes.

Innsbruck has so much to offer.

30/03/2018
Powderhounds loves Innsbruck because it has so much to offer. Surrounding a host of quirky ski resorts, Innsbruck is way more than just another city in the mountains. The city itself is a delight and full of history, activities, great accommodation, shops, services and entertainment.

Surrounding the city, the mountains and agricultural towns provide a host of classic holiday experiences. We stayed on the outskirts of Innsbruck this time, in a huge two bedroom apartment with a herd of cows housed in the rear of the building. Fantastic.
The snow activities include some of Austria's best skiing at Kuhtai and Stubai Glacier and 10km long sled runs at Oberperfuss. It is easy to spend a couple of weeks exploring all that Innsbruck has to offer.

A major transport hub, from Innsbruck one can easily go anywhere in Europe by road, rail, bus, tram and plane.
No doubt we will travel back through Innsbruck again next season.

Innsbruck is one of the best ski cities in the world.

01/05/2017
Innsbruck is easily one of the greatest 'ski cities' in the world. When it snows down low the 9 surrounding ski resorts offer diverse, fun and challenging skiing and snowboarding. The city itself is the perfect transport hub linking to everywhere in Europe and provides everything from superb accommodation, historic sites, shopping and vibrant nightlife. Plenty here for the non skier as well - alpine winter walking, 10km sled runs and a multitude of other attractions and activities.

Austria camouflaged diamond. It’s so close to Solden it is often missed but this is why you should head on up the extra 30 minutes on the bus. Arriving into the small quaint town you will def feel a quieter vibe than Solden but with a few hidden gems for a vibrant night life. The resorts are linked by top express which means a week end won’t quite cover it.

More importantly find you self a guide and a mate and head on over into the valley between the two resorts. From a not so busy resort in minutes of dropping in you wouldn’t know that you were in the centre of a commercial resort! The bars and restaurant on the hill are all warm and welcoming, none more so than the traditional and little hard to get to is the Kirchenkarhutte restaurant. It’s very traditional and the goulash soup is the best on the mountain and of course it being Austria you’re never far from a gluevin tap to keep you warm and relaxed.

From this point you can ski run 20 which is a consistent red with sharp drops and big rollers. You legs will be burning when you get to the bottom if you ski super G style. Also from this restaurant you can pick your point of the cat tracks route 21 and 20a into easy but slightly rocky non-piste routes which land you back on to 22 for a smooth ride back to lift. I could go on and tell you all the little gems where you can spend days getting lost but best leave you to find your own adventure.

Innsbruck - Ski Resort Central for Intermediates

16/07/2010
Innsbruck provides a nice alternative to a “resortified” experience you commonly find at the ski resorts. It has the distinct disadvantage of having to commute to the ski resorts each day and you can’t just pop back to the hotel to get an extra layer, yet it also has the obvious advantage of being a vibrant Austrian city that offers activities other than just skiing and snowboarding.

We particularly enjoyed the old town, the beautiful architecture and the many cosy bars and restaurants. We were also impressed with the easy bus connections to the ski resorts.

The skiing around the Innsbruck area is probably best suited to intermediates. If you’re looking for more challenging terrain in abundance, there are plenty of other options in Austria.
