Calm Vibes at Les Houches

08/07/2022
Visited Les Houches in Jan of 2020 shortly before the pandemic began on the first leg of what was a week long trip through the region. We knew it was relatively small compared to some of the other areas like Saint-Gervais, but we figured it would be a good first day warmup to the rest of the week.

Les Houches' slope area matches up with the general vibe of the entire area: chill and relaxed. The mountain isn't a place to shred your face off as it is best enjoyed finding small features to jump, coasting over the wide pistes, weaving in and out of nice clumps of trees, and ending your day with a long ride from the mountain top all the way down to the village center. Off-piste isn't much of a thing here but if you're creative you can find a little bit to do. Punching through a few curves on the groomers we actually found some great rocks to jump.

The value of Les Houches is pretty reasonable as long as you know what you're getting. Don't show up expecting face-shredding difficulty. I think personally this place is best suited for families due to the lack of difficult terrain and the gentle demeanor and vibe of the mountain. Anywhere on the mountain offers up a splendid view of Mont Blanc's summit as well as fantastic views into the valley of Chamonix. Even on a weekend, the place doesn't feel overly crowded: partly due to so many other more difficult slope areas being relatively close.

There isn't much to the town of Les Houches itself. The apres ski that we found at the final run's terminus was pretty tame as was the rest of the village. Saint-Gervais and Chamonix, a short drive away, is a better destination if that's what you're looking for.

Les Houches is a very cool very chilled out place to go when you just want to take it easy on the mountain.
