Lyngen Guided Backcountry Ski Day
Private Guided Ski Touring Day Tours in the Lyngen Alps
Overview
Ski-touring the Lyngen Alps can be a daunting task for the uninitiated, so why not make the most of your visit to these exquisite mountains by engaging the services of an experienced, local guide.
The Lyngen peninsula is covered by mountains and glaciers. Only a small road along the shoreline allows you to travel around the mountains by car. With sharp peaks and majestic domes, it has the scale of the European Alps while surrounded by water. For the ski tourer, there is something for everybody. Whether you want scenic routes, with great views and easy skiing, or more challenging terrain with big faces and steep couloirs, Lyngen is paradise. The peninsula is split by the fjord into a northern and southern part. These day-tours are based in the northern sector of the Lyngen Alps, where there are stunning mountains at the doorstep and the possibility to travel easily by car or boat.
Go solo or get a group together for your best duration & dates on a fully private customised day tour during the winter ski touring season from late February to the end of May.

Program
The ski tour usually begins and ends at the Lyngen Experience Lodge in the northern part of Lyngen Peninsula. At an agreed time, meet your guide, do a gear check and safety briefing. The guide will have chosen a route suitable for your group's ability & aspirations, as well as appropriate for the day's weather & snow conditions. Depending on the transport option you have chosen, you will either drive your own rental car or be driven by the guide to the tour start point, usually within one hour travel of the meeting point. The tour will include as much vertical ascent/descent as your group can handle within the time available. There is an option to pay for the use of a Targa fast boat and be transported to ski one of the nearby islands such as Kågen or similar.
The Skiing
Lyngen Alps has something for all abilities. Beautiful summits, open bowls, cruisy trees, steep couloirs, easy climbs or technical ascents. You name it, it is here. The mountains in the northern part of the Lyngen peninsula range from around 800m to just over 1,600m above sea level. In the higher elevations there are glaciers and peaks with perfect 360-degree views. In the lower 300m of altitude down to sea level, there is often birch and other small trees for fun, relatively sheltered tree skiing. In between there is everything else!
Total vertical ascent/descent on any given daily ski tour will depend on the group & local snow & weather conditions.
Guides & Group Size
The tour operator, Ascent Descent, is the biggest on Lyngen and they love taking people skiing in these mountains. All guides are fully certified and with great local knowledge and broader experience from frequently guiding in different parts of the world.
The maximum guest to guide ratio on a ski tour is 6 guests per guide. For any experienced groups chasing big faces, steep couloirs & tackling more challenging terrain, a group size of maximum four guests per guide is recommended.
Ski Ability, Fitness & Gear
As these are private tours, all ski & snowboard abilities can be catered for; however it is recommended all participants have some ski-touring experience AND be of a similar level of ability & experience.
Ski touring is an arduous activity. To get the best out of a visit to the Lyngen Alps, guests are encouraged to be as fit as possible before arriving. Having said that, each day ski tour will cater to your group's fitness level.
Ski-touring & splitboarding gear (including avalanche safety equipment) are not included in the tour tariff. A small amount of technical equipment is available for rental but should not be relied upon. Inquire with the operator when booking.
Transport & Meeting Point
Standard guided ski touring days utilise your group's own rental car for transport to the meeting point (Lyngen Experience Lodge or Apartments) & then to ski start point (somewhere in the northern part of the Lyngen Alps). Your car must have room for the guide & their equipment. For an extra tariff of 2,500NOK/group (417NOK/person in a group of 6), the guide will pick-up & drop off your group (anywhere within an hour drive of the Lyngen Experience Lodge) and transport them to the ski start point.
Any groups wanting to explore one of the fantastic nearby islands or a more remote part of the Lyngen coast, a Targa boat can be rented for fast over-water transport to the desired destination (weather dependent).
