Snow & Terrain
Characterized by steep faces and craggy peaks, Svaneti is the ultimate region to experience the highlights of freeriding in Georgia. Two ski resorts access a variety of forested and alpine terrain, including everything from mellow, playful rollers to steep chutes host to a 2023 Freeride World Tour event. Out of bounds, dozens of ski tours lead to Svaneti’s long glaciers and epic backcountry faces which feel straight out of a ski movie. Snowpack is deep and lasts from late December until late April.
Accommodation & Meals
Seven nights of comfortable accommodation in double/twin rooms including all breakfast and dinner every day are included in the price. Accommodation starts in the comfortable family-owned Edelweiss Guesthouse in Mestia, acclaimed for its authentic Svanetian cuisine. In between your stay in Mestia, depending on the tour choices, you may spend several nights in an Ushguli village guesthouse or high in the mountains at Cloudbase Hut. Your guide will be with you for the entire trip and will always be ready to recommend the best dishes and favorite apres spots. Upgrading to single rooms is possible for an additional fee.
For more detailed information on food & accommodation, see the Lodging tab.
Guides
Georgia’s mountains are wild and there is no avalanche control in backcountry ski zones, so we only work with the best guides who have the highest safety standards. All trips are led by a GMGA-certified backcountry ski guide who speaks fluent English and not only keeps you safe on the mountain, but also provides an exceptionally fun and exciting travel experience. German and Czech-speaking guides are also available. The maximum guide-to-guest ratio during the tour will be 1:4.
Ski Ability & Customising Your Tour
This ski safari requires a minimum experience riding off-piste powder on mellow terrain and a fitness level suitable for ski-touring at high elevation for 3-4 hours. The destinations include a range of descent options from intermediate powder runs to very steep experts-only chutes and everything in between. It is important that everyone in the group is at a similar level in order to ride together comfortably.
For those who wish to explore Georgia’s backcountry on a ski safari but do not have experience riding powder, you can join an off-piste ski course to brush up on your technique before setting out into the wild. All of the guides are also qualified ski and snowboard instructors who are happy to help you improve your technique.
Getting to Georgia
Tours start and finish in Kutaisi. Direct flights to Kutaisi (KUT) arrive from many European cities on Wizz Air & via Istanbul. You will be picked up from the airport or a local hotel to start your tour.
It is possible, but not ideal to utilise Tbilisi as your starting point, but it would incur an additional fee due to the extra travel time to transfer to Svaneti. Travel to Tbilisi (TBS) is simple via flights from most major cities in Europe and the Middle East. Many guests from all over the world fly via Dubai, London, Munich, Paris, or Istanbul.
For accommodation before or after the tour, see our Kutaisi or Tbilisi or accommodation pages.
