Hotel Kanronomori

Hotel Kanronomori

Hotel Kanronomori near Moiwa is a lovely Japanese hotel that provides some western comforts such as western beds and ensuite bathrooms. It’s mostly frequented by Japanese visitors, and combined with the beautiful onsen baths and Japanese cuisine, it’s retained the essence of Japan.

Where is Hotel Kanronomori Niseko?

Hotel Kanronomori enjoys a very tranquil and secluded setting in the Konbu Onsen area of Niseko, which has a high concentration of geothermal hot springs. It’s away from the hubbub of Niseko, yet close enough to access the slopes and Hirafu if you wish.

Hotel Kanro no mori is located approximately 700 metres from the Niseko Moiwa ski area and is about 5 minutes drive to the Annupuri ski area, 20 minutes drive to Niseko Village and 30 minutes drive to Niseko Hirafu (which is the main base area for Niseko).

The Kanronomori Hotel offers a regular shuttle bus service that goes to/from Moiwa slopes (on request), Annupuri slopes, and Hirafu (into the early evening).

To get to the hotel from the New Chitose Airport, you can get a shuttle bus that stops at the hotel. There are also shuttle buses from Sapporo City.

If you’re arriving by train, the hotel offers a free transport service to/from Niseko train station if pre-arranged.

Rooms

Kanro no mori provides a wide variety of spacious rooms including western rooms with twin beds or double beds, traditional Japanese rooms with futons on the tatami mat floor, and combination rooms with western beds and a tatami sitting area where additional people can sleep on futons on the floor. The rooms cater for 2-5 guests.

All rooms have a private ensuite bathroom with a toilet, bath and shower plus a TV with satellite channels, a small fridge and an electric kettle.

Some rooms even have their own private open air onsen.

Facilities & Services

The hotel has traditional onsen bathhouses with indoor and outdoor baths, where you can rest your weary muscles each day. There is also a private onsen that can be hired for a specific time slot.

There is a fitness centre with free yoga lessons, sauna and a games area with a billiard table.

The hotel has free wifi throughout, free parking, equipment rentals (with basic equipment), a ski storage/drying room and a gift shop.

Massage services and a karaoke room are also available for an additional fee.

Restaurants & Bars

Accommodation packages have the option of full board (breakfast and dinner) or half board (breakfast).

Restaurant Cullinet alternates its style of dining depending upon how many guests are staying in the hotel; either half buffet style or a fixed menu multi-course dinner. Dinner requires a reservation.

Restaurant Creo is a restaurant and bar and serves snacks and a la carte meals for dinner.

A buffet breakfast is served in Cullinet, which consists of a wide array of Asian cuisine along with some western fare.

Outside of the hotel there are a few dining options near the Moiwa ski resort (about 10 minutes walk) or you can utilise the early evening shuttle buses to head to Hirafu.

Tranquil Japanese Experience

27/03/2020
Spacious room
Snowy times
A la carte meal in the bar
Lovely outlook from the bar
Staying at Kanro no mori didn’t really feel like being in Niseko and it was refreshing that it’s still possible to stay in a hotel so close to the hub of Niseko that was able to offer a lovely Japanese experience. It was uplifting that the majority of the guests were Japanese (plus a handful of Chinese) and that some of the staff spoke no English whilst those on the front desk spoke only a small amount of English. Hallelujah!! It wasn’t a full-on ryokan and most of the rooms have some western beds, but otherwise it was truly a Japanese hotel with onsen and Japanese cuisine.

The location wouldn’t suit some people, as it’s not within easy walking distance of Moiwa ski resort (or Niseko United slopes), and to get anywhere requires a car or use of the shuttle buses. Yet its remoteness is also one of its strengths because it’s not in crazy busy Hirafu, and looking across the snowy forest from the onsen and snowy landscapes from the restaurants is serenely blissful.

Our hotel room was a combo Japanese/western room with 2 large western single beds and tatami sitting area. There was plenty of space to spread out, and it was nice to have a bathroom, unlike most traditional ryokan, even though we didn’t use the shower because we bathed in the onsen. I’d rate the sleep quality as a 10/5 because it was soooo quiet.

The buffet breakfast was amazing and the huge windows that highlight the lovely setting were best appreciated during daylight hours. It was good that there was the option of a la carte fare at the bar for dinner, and we also walked up to Lodge Moiwa 834 (opposite Moiwa ski resort) for dinner one night.

We would highly recommend Hotel Kanro no mori if you want the skiing experience of Niseko along with a relaxing onsen and dinner, and to escape other gaijin. This is not for you if you want a westernised experience, kids’ activities or nightlife.
