Owani was a dud when we visited in early February. Like a few other small northern Tohoku ski areas, it was suffering majorly from a lack of snow. It was dumping with snow on arrival, but it only had 20cm of snow, whilst in some areas the base was poking through. It was just a bit of fluff on top of ice, so it didn’t warrant much time being spent there. We’d only return if the snow depth was significant.

The base area amenities were reasonably basic and it appeared that Covid protection was still alive and well, with massive plastic screens in place in the cafeteria and “mandatory” temperature screening. Whilst the many other ski areas we visited in 2024 didn’t have these procedures in place, it seemed that Owani was not very contemporary.
