Yoshidaya Ryokan

Yoshidaya Ryokan

Yoshidaya Ryokan offers simple Japanese-style accommodation where you sleep on futons on the tatami flooring – a good way to get the full Japanese experience in Zao Onsen.

Where is Yoshidaya Ryokan?

Yoshidaya Ryokan is located in the centre of town on Takayu Dori Street where there are various restaurants and shops. One public onsen is about one minute walk away, whilst another public bath is about 2 minutes away.

It is about 10 minutes walk up to the Zao Sky Cable (the main base area of Zao Onsen Ski Resort).

A complimentary shuttle is offered between the Zao bus terminal and the ryokan, which is about 5 minutes walk away.

Hotel Rooms

Yoshidaya Ryokan offers either twin rooms or triple rooms, with tatami flooring and futons for sleeping on the floor. Some rooms have a hand basin, and there are shared toilets and showers. The ryokan also has a simple onsen that can be used for bathing, or you can head to one of the nearby public baths to really get into the onsen culture (yukata robes are provided).

The rooms have a small table and cushions for sitting on the floor, heating, a little TV, a mini fridge, electric kettle and tea bags.

Facilities and Services

The facilities and services of the hotel/ryokan include:
  • English speaking front staff/manager
  • Small indoor onsen (segregated by gender)
  • Small communal area near entrance with table and chairs and massage chair
  • Free wifi

  • Ski and snowboard storage
  • Bus terminal shuttle

Dining

Western breakfast can be arranged (with at least one day notice), whilst Japanese breakfast can be just reserved at check-in.

A range of Japanese set dinners are available if reserved at least one day in advance.

Yoshidaya Ryokan provides inexpensive accommodation, and the quality of the accommodation is in line with the money you pay and nice enough to get a lovely Japanese experience. And the massage chair was a complete winner!

There were a few westerners there when we visited and it was easy to see why, considering the very friendly front desk lady spoke perfect English, and that western breakfasts are on offer (dried fish for breakfast can grow tired rather quickly!).

Our room was nice enough and very traditional Japanese. The heater and wifi worked well, but it was a bit noisy because the walls and doors were thin and we could hear people walking up and down the corridor heading to the toilet in the middle of the night.

Zao Onsen is an impressive onsen town but the onsen at Yoshidaya wasn’t particularly impressive. There was only a basic indoor bath and it was like a lobster pot, and no amount of cold water hosed into the bath was going to make it bearable (unless of course you love it really hot)! Luckily there are also nearby public onsens.

The walk up to the slopes is a rather steep hill so you’d need to be fit, but the location is great for easy access to the public onsen, restaurants, bars and shops.
