Altai Cat Ski Touring Combo

You can really get away from the ordinary with a ski or snowboard trip to Ridder in Kazakhstan. The Altai snowcat operation from Primalscapes offers trips that are from Saturday to Sunday that include a few days of cat skiing and a few days of ski touring/splitboarding, whilst being based at a lovely lodge.

The Ridder region is geographically blessed to receive high quality dry snow, and the terrain is mostly widely spaced trees. Luxury powder and upscale lodging comes at a fraction of the price you’d pay in other parts of the world. The timber lodge offers a spa, other creature comforts, and gourmet meals are on offer.

Highlights of Cat Skiing/Ski Touring Combo Trip

  • 3 days of cat skiing: 5-8 runs per day with about 3,500 to 4,000 metres of vertical
  • 3 days of ski touring/splitboarding with 600 to 1,300m vertical daily
  • Ridder is a very snowy destination thanks to moisture-laden air masses that come from Siberia, and due to the cold and arid continental climate the snow has very low water content. The snow might not be great for making a snowball, but it’s great for powder skiing and riding.
  • This can be a good spot for early season riding, with reliable skiing possible from late November through to early April.
  • Fun terrain of 20 to 35 degrees gradient, in amongst well spaced larch trees.
  • No roughing it - stay in a deluxe lodge in rooms with ensuite bathroom and cuisine from an acclaimed chef.
  • The snowcats are modern and have well sized cabins with heating, comfortable seating and large windows to take in the views of the snowy forest on the ascents.
  • Most of the skiing is below 2,000 metres elevation, so there’s no gasping for thin air when ski touring.
  • Excellent safety record for over 7 years.
  • Flight-related carbon emissions are fully offset for every participant through carbon credits.
See the Altai cat skiing overview for more information on the location and travel logistics, as well as information on terrain and safety.

Yurt Based Ski Touring in Kazakhstan

You have the option to extend your stay and experience some more ski touring and get off-the-grid by staying in a yurt. Located in the heart of the Trans-Ili Alatau mountains at 1,750m elevation and just 3 hrs drive from the city of Almaty, the yurt gives private access to diverse ski touring terrain with 700 to 900 meters of vertical drop and epic views of 5,000m peaks in the distance. The yurt is heated with a wood-burning stove, has bunk beds, and comes with half-board cooked meals, a power generator, and a steam sauna. It’s a complete detox from modern life and internet connectivity. Please get in contact if you want more details.

Equipment

Considering the powder, skiers probably want to have fat skis, with a waist of 105 to 120mm, and a touring set up. Skiers and splitboarders will need skins, extendable poles, and a backpack that equipment can attach to.

If you don’t have your own avalanche safety gear, an avalanche transceiver, shovel and probe are also available to rent. Naturally there is always the risk of avalanche risk in the backcountry, however the snowpack is usually stable, most skiing is below the tree line, and the stability enhanced by the frequent tracking by skiers and riders. You probably don’t need an airbag, but a helmet is highly recommended.

It can get really cold in Ridder, particularly in early season, with temps dropping as low as -20 or even – 30 degrees C, although due to the dry air the temperature doesn’t feel quite that frigid. It might be worth packing an extra layer and down jacket in case you need it. The snowcat is heated, but you might also want to consider disposable hand warmers and neoprene overboots if your extremities are particularly prone to the cold.

Lodging

The 4-star lodge has been recently built, and is the perfect place to unwind after a day out skiing or snowboarding. The lodge is like a cross between a chalet and a hotel, and it has 17 well-sized twin/double guest rooms with wooden interiors and hand-crafted furniture that add warmth, and all rooms have ensuites.

The lodge has a restaurant where you can select from a la carte cuisine from an acclaimed chef, who serves up both Kazakh and European fare. Typical Kazakhstan meals feature heavy on the meat, but if you provide advice regarding your dietary preferences, the lodge will be able to provide good vegetarian options.

Daily breakfasts are buffet style, to ensure you have adequate fuel for a day playing in the mountains.

The bar has a good selection of local and international beers, spirits and wines.

The lodge has a spa center which can be visited for an additional fee. It features a traditional Siberian steam sauna and Middle Eastern hammam (Turkish bath), and massages are available for the ultimate in après ski relaxation. Other amenities include wifi and a drying area for boots and clothing.

Best of all, the lodge is also the snowcat staging area, so you can walk out of the lodge and straight into the snowcat. On ski touring days, your guide will drive you to the trail head.
