Chile Lake & Volcano Backcountry Tour

Head to Southern Chile with Amity Tours for an adventure skiing or snowboarding the active volcanoes of Chile, far away from the crowds at the ski resorts near Santiago. Ascend to the live craters of the volcanoes and ski or ride down, for a very unique experience. This backcountry ski/snowboard adventure includes plenty of human powered ascent, some assistance from the lifts at ski areas, and ascent gain on one day with a snowcat or snowmobiles.

Group

This tour has some fixed date group tours that solos, duos or small groups can join. These tours require a minimum of 4 participants and have 10 guests maximum. For resort skiing/riding there is a 6:1 guest to guide ratio with a professional ski instructor, whilst for volcano ascents there is a professional mountain guide with a maximum 4:1 guest to guide ratio.

If you have your own group you can also request a private trip. Pending availability, the trips run from July to September.

Ability Level

This tour is strictly reserved for those people in strong physical condition and an advanced level of skiing in off-piste/backcountry conditions. No previous ski touring experience is required. 

Equipment

Gear for volcano ascents can be provided including boot crampons, ice axe, helmet, gloves, backpack and mountain boots.

You will need to bring touring equipment including splitboard or skis with touring bindings, skins and ski/splitboard crampons. These can be hired before travel if required.

Off-piste safety equipment (transceiver, shovel, probe) will be provided if necessary. A backpack with carrying straps for skis is essential.

Itinerary Lake & Volcano District Tour

Arrival in Chile

You should fly into Temuco Airport (ZCO). You can look at flight routes here. In Chile, domestic flights are operated by 3 airline companies: Latam; Sky Airline' and JetSmart.

Due to flight schedules you'll need to overnight in Temuco. Best Western Ferrat Hotel in Temuco city, which is within easy walking distance of restaurants and shops, and is the meeting point for the following day. The official shuttle company at Temuco’s Airport is called TransAraucania. They offer regular and private shuttles to Temuco at $30.000 pesos (USD $40 per vehicle) and a reservation is not required. Driving time is approximately 35 minutes.

Day 1 - Temuco to Corralco

  • The tour team will meet you at the Best Western Ferrat Hotel in Temuco at 9am and drive you to the first destination, Corralco Ski Resort. Corralco is a great ski area that sits at the base of the active Lonquimay Volcano. In addition to good snow conditions, the area is renowned for the araucaria trees.

Day 2 - Corralco - Backcountry Skiing on Lonquimay Volcano

  • Ski or ride the slopes of the Corralco Ski Resort
  • If the weather is favorable, the group will ascend the Lonquimay volcano and reach its massive crater (2.865 meters / 9.400 feet). From the end of the top lift, it takes about 2 hours to reach the top and then you get to enjoy the off-piste skiing to the bottom of the slopes.

Day 3 - Ski Corralco then Transfer to Pucon

  • Enjoy a morning ski at Corralco Ski Resort
  • Transport to Pucón, Chile’s capital of adventure tourism located at the foot of the Villarrica Volcano.

  • Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 4 - Ski Pucon & Villarrica Volcano Climb

  • The group will go to Pucón Ski Resort located at the base of the Villarrica Volcano (2.847 meters / 9.340 feet).
  • If the weather permits, you’ll hike up to the top until reaching the active crater.
  • Finally, the group will ski off-piste all the way down to the base of the volcano.

Day 5 - Rest Day & Natural Hot Springs

  • For the rest day, you will visit a wonderful thermal complex located in the environs of the Villarrica National Park. You’ll see several majestic snow-capped volcanoes such as Quetrupillan and Rucapillan. The Geométricas Hot Springs are located in the environs of the park, Due to the volcanic activity in this part of Chile, they offer the perfect combination of thermal facilities and natural surroundings.
  • On the drive back to Pucon you may be treated to a wonderful view of Calafquén Lake.

Day 6 - Half Day Skiing Pucon & Transfer to Huilo-Huilo Biological Reserve

  • In the morning explore the off-piste areas of Pucón Ski Resort.
  • You'll be driven to Huilo Huilo Biological Reserve and enjoy a well-deserved relaxation at the SPA.
  • Optional: Try to climb Villarrica volcano if weather conditions were not good the day before.
  • Accommodation: Nothofagus Hotel & SPA
  • Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 7 - Mocho Volcano Climb & Backcountry Skiing at Huilo-Huilo Biological Reserve

  • Today is another fantastic adventure of climbing and skiing active volcanoes.
  • After an early morning breakfast, you’ll go off-road through the native forest until you reach the snow. There, a snowcat and snowmobiles will take the group to a plateau at the skirts of Mocho-Choshuenco volcanoes. As there aren’t any ski lifts, skinning and hiking are the only ways to reach the top of both volcanoes: Mocho (2.422 meters / 7.946 feet); and Choshuenco (2.415 meters / 7.923 feet).

Day 8 - Transfer to Temuco Airport

  • Farewell to Chile’s Lake and Volcano District.
  • Transfer in the morning from Huilo-Huilo to Temuco Airport (ZCO) according to flight schedule.

This 4 star hotel sits at the base of the Corralco Ski Area on the edge of the tree line. One side of the hotel offers unimpeded views of the striking Volcan Lonquimay, whilst the other is surrounded by the beautiful yet intriguing Araucaria trees.

Amity Tours Terms & Conditions

Booking Policy

In order to confirm your reservation, a 20% deposit is required. Your first deposit must be paid, within 2 weeks after confirmation. Your trip with Amity Tours must be paid in full with 60 days prior the date of departure. 

Cancellation Policy

If, for any reason, you are forced to cancel your trip, the following penalties will apply:

  • Cancellations made with more than 60 days are 100% refundable.
  • Cancellations made between 59 and 31 days before date of arrival, Amity Tours will retain 20% of the total deposit.
  • Cancellations made 30 days before date of arrival, we will retain 100% of the total deposit.
  • If you make a deposit and cannot travel, you can always use that money as credit with Amity Tours and use it within the next 12 months.

Amity Tours reserves the right to resell tour space without notice if the final payment has not been received on due date. Amity Tours reserves the right to cancel tours if the minimum number is not achieved.

Itinerary Modifications

Amity Tours reserves the right to modify the itinerary if the change allows the achievement of better services. Or due to reasons beyond our control it is compelled to so, without altering the length of the tour.

If, for any particular reason, a participant doesn’t use an included service in the itinerary, he or she will not have any reimbursement or right to complain.

Amity Tours reserves the right to cancel part of or the whole tour in case of Force Majeure.
