Spring Gassan Backcountry & Cherry Blossoms

This fixed date mixed-group tour combines backcountry skiing at Mt Gassan, with cherry blossom (sakura) viewing and sightseeing at Yamadera (Risshaku-ji Temple) on the final day. This trip is ideal for those who want to experience Yamagata's nature and majestic mountain views, culture, and history.

The beauty of skiing in spring in Japan is that the snowpack and weather is finally conducive to getting up into the alpine areas of mountains like Mt Gassan and Mt Yudono, which during winter are pummelled by big storms that bring an abundance of snow. The Mt Gassan Ski Resort is not able to open during winter because the chairlift and access road are buried in metres of snow, and it's not until April 11th that it can open. Depending on the objectives for the 2 days of backcountry touring, the lifts at Gassan Ski Resort may be used to gain initial ascent before donning the touring gear. Whilst deep powder days are not usual for April, the corn snow is also appealing and it makes for lovely buttery turns.

Tour Highlights

Spring Skiing on the Remaining Snow of Mt. Gassan:

  • Enjoy the exhilarating skiing on corn snow
  • Further up from the lift summit, go ski touring, splitboarding or snowshoeing into the big alpine areas that offer beautiful views of the surrounding snowcapped mountains
  • Mt. Gassan Ski resort will open from 11th APR.

Elegant Cherry Blossom Viewing at Kajo Park:

  • Yamagata's best cherry blossom viewing spot, with about 1,500 cherry trees in full bloom.
  • The contrast between the historic castle ruins and the cherry blossoms is a spectacular view
  • Enjoy a picnic under the cherry blossoms.
