Methven Heliski Tour

The Methven Heli Tour is the ultimate tour for riders who want to pack in as much snowboarding in NZ within a short space of time. With regular and cheap flights to Christchurch, Methven sets itself up as a perfect staging area for some of New Zealand’s best resort and backcountry terrain.

This fully-hosted package includes 3 full days of guided heli skiing, a day of skiing/riding at Mt Hutt, lodging in a private room with ensuite, daily cooked breakfasts & dinners at the lodge and lunches on-mountain on heli days plus transfers to/from Christchurch airport.

The aim of the tour is to get 3 full days of heli skiing in over 5 possible ski days. If weather permits you have the option of adding a 4th day of heli skiing (at and extra cost) or alternatively you will spend an extra day skiing/riding at Mt Hutt (beyond the included day).

The heli skiing days are operated by Methven Heliski. They operate a huge terrain tenure across 3 mountain ranges with over 200 named runs. The mountains out there are big, you will see why the guides like to call it ‘Mini Alaska’. All safety gear and briefing on how to use it is provided by internationally accredited heli guides. A typical day will consist of 5 huge leg burning runs from the helicopter, with the option to add on extra runs if your legs and lungs allow!

Mt Hutt is just a short drive from your base in Methven and one of New Zealand's premier ski resorts with terrain to challenge all levels.

The Heli Skiing Terrain

Your heli-ski guides have an in depth knowledge of the local area and will be able to find any type of terrain to suit your ability. From sheltered powder-filled basins, bowls and wide rolling mountain flanks through to steeps and chutes. Runs vary between 2000 to 4000 vertical feet of treeless terrain.

Ability & Fitness Level

It is recommended the rider be a advanced or above and have a moderate level of fitness in order to get the most out of this tour.

Small Groups

Mint Tours offer one of the smallest client to guide ratio’s in the industry which ultimately leads to a better experience for everyone. Their small groups allow greater manoeuvrability and ease of access to the best areas a destination can offer. On the heli-ski days, the guest to guide ratio is maximum of 5 people per guide. This also makes for a more personal experience between guests and guides.

Methven Heli Tour Accommodation

Mt Taylor Lodge is a fabulous place to stay in Methven (the nearest town to Mt Hutt).

The lodge is operated by Nick Taylor who is a brilliant host with a raft of local knowledge (and he makes a mean cafe latte!)

The lodge has comfy single rooms with a private bathroom. There are some nice communal living areas (lounge with a combustible fireplace), common kitchen and a spa bath. Free wifi is available throughout the building and a daily breakfast & dinner is provided.

A SAFE AND RESPONSIBLE RETURN TO TRAVEL

As we start planning our return to running tours, the safety and wellbeing of our travellers, staff and suppliers will remain our priority and our return to operations will be done in a safe and responsible way. We have reviewed all our health and safety policies and are implementing new minimum standards that emphasise increased hygiene and sanitation. These are in line with recommendations from the World Health Organization and following the World Travel & Tourism Council’s (WTTC) Safe Travel protocols for tour operators.

Before travelling, we recommend you check your government’s travel advisory and the World Health Organization website for the most up to date information about destinations and permitted travel from each country.

Skiing and Snowboarding naturally include social distance, however, there are often concentration zones and high-traffic areas where COVID-19 transmission risk is higher. Thus, we have implemented the following protocols for concentrated spaces such as lifts, warming areas, and other skiing and snowboarding related facilities.

PRE-ARRIVAL, INSTRUCTION AND BRIEFING

Prior to travel and prior to commencement of tour, we will ask guests to;

Self-assess their physical condition and self-screen their risk profile. If guests have symptoms, however mild, or are in a household where someone has symptoms, they are advised to stay at home.

ON TOUR

Mint will:

Ask guests and staff to monitor their own health, display appropriate signage on COVID-19 symptoms, educate staff on how to identify COVID-19 symptoms and describe COVID-19 symptoms in group meetings.

Facilitate the removal of guests or staff who show symptoms of COVID-19 and are either unable to or unwilling to be tested, Mint reserves the right to remove them from our tours to prevent any risk to others.

Where possible, we will strive to keep tour participant numbers as low as reasonably possible. We will favour small groups tours with a maximum of 6 guests.

Physical distancing will be practiced as much as practically possible during our tours. Our tour leaders will promote the shared responsibility for distancing.

We will implement the use of face coverings when in situations of higher risk of virus transmission. Examples include: when using transportation, during close-proximity instruction, in lines, lifts or gondolas, on crowded slopes where distancing is difficult to maintain, and when taking a break from the elements in heated areas where people congregate.

Prepare for interaction with people external to your group which might not know, or be following, the same health and safety standards that we require of our guests. Provide ample access to sanitiser. We ask that guests sanitise hands when entering any building or congregating, before starting an activity, and as often as needed throughout the activity.
