Tohoku Backcountry + Cat Ski Tour

Far away from the crowds and westernised ski areas of Nagano and the resortified ski areas of Hokkaido such as Niseko and Rusutu, is the northern Tohoku region, which provides a more authentic and traditional Japanese ski experience. In Tohoku there are fewer people and slopes with abundant dry powder.

The Tohoku Backcountry + Cat Ski Tour from Powderquest is culturally intensive and backcountry focused. With a little help from the ski lifts at ski areas such as Hakkoda and Appi, plus the snowcat at Hachimantai Cat Skiing, you'll ski tour or splitboard varied terrain in northern Tohoku. The professional ski guides will lead you to deep powder by day, while hosting traditional Japanese dinners each evening. You’ll soak in rejuvenating hot spring baths, experience the local Tohoku culture, and road trip through one of Japan’s lesser travelled ski regions.

Highlights

  • Canadian IFMGA/ACMG ski guide + Japanese/English speaking assistant ski guide
  • Day of private cat skiing at an abandoned Tohoku ski resort
  • Explore up to 6 different ski areas loaded with Tohoku powder, including skiing amongst the “snow monster” trees of Mount Hakkoda
  • Noticeably less crowded compared to other Japanese ski destinations
  • Deeply rooted Japanese culture, traditional locally sourced meals and muscle relaxing onsen spas at comfortable accommodations
  • Maximum 8 guests per trip

Who is the Tour Suited To?

The Tohoku Backcountry Tour is suited to advanced snowboarders and skiers with experience in deep snow, who are keen on a unique, lesser traveled side of Japan, enriched in local culture and onsens.

Daily riding is accessed via a combo of ski lifts, backcountry touring, and snow cat. The heart of the program is backcountry powder skiing and the tour is geared toward those who are willing and able to earn their turns. Expect deep powder snow, tree runs, bowls and uphill skinning to access the goods when the group leaves the ski areas. With the exception of a few resort off-piste powder laps from time to time, do not expect to ski at the resort unless weather delays the ability to leave the boundaries each morning.

You will require backcountry touring equipment for this trip - a packing list will be provided.

If you have any questions you can submit a booking request.
