Summit Ski Safari - Hokkaido Powder Belt

The Hokkaido Powder Belt Tour is a multi-day ski safari incorporating a mixture of lift assisted backcountry (sidecountry) at ski resorts as well as some backcountry touring in the Daisetsuzan range.

"Hokkaido Powder Belt" is a term used to describe the region that incorporates the powder laden ski areas of Central Hokkaido. Due to the location away from the coast, the climatic conditions in Central Hokkaido produce low humidity dry powder that falls in abundance. The region also has the highest mountains of Hokkaido. The Ski Safari Hokkaido Powder Belt Tour heads to some of the best ski resorts of the Hokkaido Powder Belt such as Furano, Tomamu, and a gem or two, plus the backcountry zones in the Daisetsuzan mountains that include Asahidake (which is partly cable car serviced) and Tokachidake.

Local weather patterns typically vary somewhat, and your guide will have some flexibility to adapt the trip to chase snow conditions in order for you to get the best possible experience.

This tour is offered as a group tour where solos or small groups can join one of the fixed date tours, or if you have your own group you can have a private tour, pending availability. If you have any questions or want to double check about availability, please make a booking request.

Ability

This tour requires advanced riding skills with at least entry level backcountry knowledge. Riders should be fit and feel comfortable skiing black runs and be progressing into powder snow. The guides can provide technique analysis and provide instruction to help develop your powder skills. The guides can also cover introductory skills for riding in the backcountry in order to gain the best experience from the tour.

Equipment

Backcountry ski and snowboard equipment will be required for this tour as there will be a mixture of lift accessed sidecountry as well as backcountry. For touring skis we recommend a minimum of 100+ underfoot. Avalanche safety equipment will be essential. For more information on equipment rental please contact us for details.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Pick up from Chitose Airport and enjoy your ride up to Furano, which is known as Hokkaido's belly button because it sits right in the middle of the Hokkaido island. Check in to your accommodation and get settled in. 7pm briefing on the trip.

Day 2 - Furano Ski Resort is perfect for gaining those top to bottom laps through Hokkaido's driest powder snow. Just a small slide out of the resort can give the group access to completely untouched tree runs through hidden forests.

Day 3 - Just south of Furano is the next destination. Tomamu is packed with powder pockets, and with most skiers sticking to the beginner slopes of this vast area, the group will have no problem lapping up the goods in and out of the resort.

Day 4 - This hidden gem and locals' resort is the perfect lift accessed powder playground. After a morning lapping lift accessed side-country, you'll slap those skins on and explore further afield.

Day 5 - South Daisetsuzan holds the key to some incredible lines. With a full day of backcountry touring, your legs are getting the workout you have been waiting for. After a day of earning your turns you can enjoy a soak in a wild onsen (hot spring) on the side of a mountain.

Day 6 - Known as ‘Kamui Mintara’ or the "Playground of the Gods", you'll spend the final day of the adventure on Hokkaido's tallest mountain. On fine weather days you can tour up to the billowing fumaroles of this volcano before making a B-line to the peak or descending on Asahidake's epic terrain.

Day 7 - Return to Chitose Airport after breakfast

The weather forecast will be checked regularly by the guides. Safety predictions based on these will be given each morning at breakfast before heading to the resort. In the case of bad weather conditions there may be the possibility to explore an alternative close by resort or spend 2 days at one of the above mentioned resorts if the weather permits.

Accommodation

You will be staying in hotels close to each ski resort and within walking distance to restaurants/bars/convenience stores. Rooms are shared twin bed rooms.

If you are a solo traveller there is the option to upgrade to a single room for an additional charge.
