Folgarida Marilleva Ski Resort Italy

The Folgarida-Marilleva ski resort is one of three ski resorts in the Brenta Dolomites of Italy. Interlinked with Madonna di Campiglio & Pinzolo, the resorts combine to create the Ski Area Campiglio Dolomiti di Brenta. The resort has a fine selection of piste trails perfectly interlinked with ski-in ski-out lodgings & public transport.

Pros & Cons for Folgarida Marilleva Ski Resort

Pros

  • Modern lifts.
  • Interesting variety of piste trails for beginners & intermediates.
  • Lots of sheltered, tree lined terrain.
  • Off-piste tree skiing available.
  • Enjoyable mountain huts.
  • Superb public transport links direct to the ski lifts.
  • Plenty of ski-in / ski-out accommodation.
  • Lively après ski in the upper mountain huts & the valley villages.

Cons

  • Extremely busy pistes heading toward Madonna di Campiglio in the mornings.
  • Some piste trails 'skied off' incredibly early.
  • Marilleva-1400 accommodation resembles an industrial ghetto.
  • Accommodation in general is of a comparatively low standard, including many apartment style lodgings being poorly equipped, particularly kitchen utensils et al.

Pro or Con (depending on your perspective!)

  • Very few 4 or 5-star hotels and fine dining restaurants (if that matters to you!)
  • Full of international tourists, barely a local to be seen or heard!

Skiing & snowboarding, Lifts & Terrain

A surprise to many, Folgarida-Marilleva has more ski trails than its better-known neighbour, Madonna di Campiglio. That fact is negated by the notion the most people purchase the combination lift pass that includes both ski areas. Nevertheless, the resort’s nearly 900m of skiable vertical is enough to melt the thighs of most skiers & boarders on the many ‘top to bottom’ runs. Bottom being a relative term. The true bottom of the resort at the gondola bases of Daolasa & Marilleva-900 have no piste trails leading to them, although in good snow it is possible to bash your way the off-piste. Otherwise a download is required from Marilleva-1400 or the intermediate stop on the Daolasa gondola (1370m altitude).

Folgarida Marilleva has an efficient & generally modern lift system servicing fun alpine and tree lined beginner & intermediate piste terrain amounting to around 60km long. The few advanced black trails are long & joyously fast, buy quite easy - light grey at best! Several of the trails get trounced to oblivion early on a sunny day as the hordes head toward the higher elevation terrain at Madonna di Campiglio. An excellent novice ski area is located at Marilleva-1400 village & at two mid-mountain areas (Malghet Aut & Malga Pacianna). Off-piste tree skiing opportunities may encourage advanced skiers & snowboarders to pay Folgarida Marilleva a visit in a heavy snowfall.

Lift passes

Folgarida-Marilleva, with Pinzolo, is part of the sandwich encasing Madonna di Campiglio, the ‘meat’ in the Ski Area Campiglio Dolomiti di Brenta (Brenta Dolomites Pass) which interlinks the three resorts by ski lift, piste & pass. The local Folgarida-Marilleva lift pass is significantly cheaper than the Brenta Dolomites Pass.

See the Brenta Dolomites ski trail map.

For more diversity (including a glacier), & reasonable value if wanting to hedge your bets on a week-long jaunt in the region, the Skirama Dolomiti pass includes the aforementioned areas, plus the nearby Tonale, Pejo, Monte Bondone, plus Paganella & Folgaria. Of course, skiing any more than one of the Skirama Dolomiti locations on the same day is problematic, so it may behove one to simply buy the more affordable local lift passes at each location.

See the Skirama Dolomiti Resorts Map.

In addition, holders of a Vail Resorts Epic Pass (Epic Pass, Epic Adaptive, Epic Australia Pass, Epic Adaptive Australia Pass Holders, & Vail Resorts lifetime Pass Holders) receive seven complimentary, unrestricted and consecutive days, in total, of skiing and riding at Skirama Dolomiti ski areas. Upon redemption of all seven days, Epic Pass Holders can then purchase discounted lift tickets at 50% off the window price. Epic Pass Holders must present their valid season pass card and photo ID at any Skirama Dolomiti ticket office where you will be issued a magnetic key card upon validation and receipt of a €5.00 refundable deposit per card. The deposit is refunded when the key card is returned in good condition. Pawesome!

Where is Folgarida Marilleva Italy?

The Folgarida-Marilleva ski resort is in the Vale di Sole, part of Trentino province of northern Italy. The resort is around 200km by car north west of Milan via Passo del Tonale (3½ to 4½hr by rental car) and 225km north east of Venice via Verona (3½hr). Innsbruck Austria is similar distance but only 3hr travel time to the north. The closest major town is Trento, a little over an hour’s drive from Folgarida.

Gateway airport options are many & various. Milan Malpensa (MXP) and Venice (VCE) airports are the main avenues of entry for international visitors to the region. The smaller airports of Milan (Bergamo & Linate), Innsbruck (INN) and Verona are the way in for European and UK travellers. For ease & efficiency, book a private transfer to get you to the action quicker. Search & book your private transfer.

Folgarida Marilleva has exceptional transport links with two railway stations (Daolasa & Marilleva) coming complete with gondola ski lifts heading up the mountain. Trains depart from Trento, which is accessible from Bolzano & Innsbruck to the north or Verona to the south.

Search & book train tickets to Trento & beyond.

If driving to the region we recommend getting a rental car from Austria (i.e. Innsbruck) to ensure it is fully winterised. Day parking at many location in Folgarida requires payment of a fee. See our Travel to Italy page for detailed info, hints & warnings.

Folgarida Marilleva Accommodation

The three main ski resort villages are Folgarida, Marilleva 900 & Marilleva 1400. Each provide convenient apartment and hotel lodgings near the ski lifts. The ski area's proximity to Val di Sole ensures a multitude of additional accommodation options, which is just as well because both Marilleva villages are to be avoided! Folgarida is far & away the more pleasant of the mountain villages.

Search & book Folgarida Marilleva ski accommodation.

The towns of Mezzana, Male, Daolasa and Dimaro (on the Madonna di Campiglio road junction) are better options if Folgarida is booked out.

Of course a better, but more expensive alternative is in the lift & piste connected village of Madonna di Campiglio. Soaking in the sun and views on a lounger at the Cinque Laghi or on Monte Spinale (spritz in hand!), then ripping back down into the beautiful town at warp factor 10 is a fun way to experience Madonna di Campiglio. And so is staying in the town itself. Once you park the car (potential saga), wandering the town is pure pleasure & a gondola up to the ski hill will not be far away - there are 5 extending from the town (and a sixth one not too distant!).

Ski Rentals & Lessons

Review

The Powderhounds reviewed Folgarida Marilleva some time ago. Whilst it certainly has strengths, we didn’t overly enjoy the experience, but its Val di Sole & Brenta Dolomites neighbours are certainly worth checking out.
