Arpa Cat Skiing

Ski Arpa Chile for a fabulously wild and magical adventure. Powder hounds should definitely put Arpa Cat Skiing Chile on the "must do" list for any ski vacation to South America. Ski Arpa provides steep and challenging runs of 900 metres of uninterrupted vertical - not something you'd usually expect from cat skiing. This Chile cat skiing operation has all the delights of great terrain and the backcountry that you'd expect from heli skiing in the Andes. The difference is that Arpa provides exceptional value for money. With Chile heli skiing, the same amount of vertical would cost four to six times as much.

Ski El Arpa (the harp) is the only formal Chile cat skiing operation as the South Americans haven’t fully caught onto the joys of the snowcat yet, but the secret is slowly leaking out.

Benefits of Cat Skiing

Cat skiing offers an opportunity to get away from the congestion and crowds at the ski resorts. You don’t have to fight hundreds or thousands of Santiago locals to get the fresh lines. And cat skiing is better than ski touring. You can save your time and energy for doing what you love most – going down the hill! Also, with cat skiing the guided backcountry experience significantly improves the safety aspects.

Where is Arpa Cat Skiing Located?

Arpa cat skiing operates in two valleys, “Valle el Arpa” and “Valle la Honda”, in the shadow of Cerro Aconcagua, the highest mountain in the Andes. Ski Arpa is only 108km northeast of Santiago de Chile (about a 2:15 hour drive), 35km from the town of Los Andes, and not far from Portillo ski resort.

The access road to Arpa is very rugged so a heavy duty 4WD is required to get there. It's easiest to get a tour operator (see below) to provide transport from Los Andes or Santiago. If you want to self-drive see our getting to Arpa page for more information.

A great way to sample both Arpa cat skiing and the famous Portillo ski resort, is with a Portillo & Arpa Cat Skiing package.

Arpa Chile Accommodation

There is now a small base camp at Ski Arpa where you can go glamping. There are also various lodging options in the town of Los Andes (about an hour away) or in the Aconcagua Valley.

The closest accommodations for Ski Arpa cat skiing are about an hour away in the town of Los Andes. Los Andes is aptly named except that the town isn't really in The Andes, but the magnificent mountains are visible everywhere throughout the town. With a population of about 60,000 people, Los Andes is a great place to stay because you can get a feel for the real Chile, away from the staged culture of ski resorts. There are no great tourist attractions here except for some hot springs, but it's a pleasant base for skiing at Arpa or even Portillo.

If you want some luxury, stay at Termas de Jahuel, a 4 star hotel that offers hot baths and pampering services.

For a more budget option, The Inca Hotel is offered in the packages.

You can search for more San Estaban and Los Andes hotels here, and book on-line.

If you're just planning to do one day of cat skiing with Ski Arpa, the other option is to stay in one of the Santiago hotels.

Approximate travel times to Ski Arpa:
  • Los Andes - 1:25hrs
  • Casa San Regis (in San Estaban) - 0:50hrs
  • Termas Jahuel - 1:25hrs
  • Santiago - 2:15hrs

Location of Arpa Cat Ski Area

Ski Arpa cat skiing operates "in the shadow of Aconcagua", the Big Kahuna in the Andes Mountains. Arpa is 108km north of Santiago (about a 2:15 hour drive), and 35km from the town of Los Andes (1:25 hours). If staying at Casa San Regis, it's only a 50 minute trip up the mountain.

Ski Resorts Nearby

Portillo is about 1:25 hours east of the town of Los Andes.

Getting There - Self Drive

The access road to Arpa is very rugged so a heavy duty 4WD is required to get there. The last 13 kilometres are not paved and it's more of a rocky trail than a road. Ring Arpa in the morning to check road conditions and to check they are operating (Telephone: 56 2 244 2750; Cell: 56 9 9 131 7044). If the snow line is low they may pick you up in the cat at the snow line and transport you up to the refugio ("day lodge").

The drive is very doable in a 4WD and the need for chains is somewhat debatable. The problem is that chains are not available in Los Andes (or anywhere else nearby), so chances are that you'll have to do without them. However if you want to play it really safe you'll need to hire or buy chains in Santiago. Try Xscape (next to KL Adventures) at the start of Camino de Farellones just after the turn-off to Tres Valles ski resorts from Av Las Condes. New chains might cost about $Ch65.000 to $Ch78.000 or $Ch8.000 per day to rent.  Otherwise if you are coming from Tres Valles (Farellones, El Colorado, Valle Nevado and La Parva) you could try and negotiate with the men on the side of the road regarding hiring or buying chains.

Take care on the road up. Aside from the obvious hazards you may also come across goats, horses, or friendly waving locals on the road.

Getting There - Transport Providers

Otherwise save yourself the hassle and get a lift. There are lots of Arpa cat skiing packages or tours that includes transport.

Ski Arpa Chile Cat Skiing Terrain

The cat ski terrain is spread over 4,000 plus acres (1,619 hectares) between elevations of 2,700 and 3,740 metres. The terrain is treeless with huge powder bowls, steep slopes and chutes, and is most suited to advanced and expert riders. Many of the runs are double black diamond and there are even some optional lines that could be rated as suicidal. The highlight of the terrain is that the steep pitch continues all the way down to the day lodge. There are no major traverses or cruisy run-outs. Ski Arpa terrain is guaranteed to challenge your thighs as well as your lungs!

Arpa Chile has two snowcats and can accommodate up to 25 riders, so you don’t have to share the terrain and powder with many others.

Powderhounds Review Arpa Cat Skiing

Ski Arpa in Chile is very different to many of the glamorous cat skiing operations that can be found in North America. Ski Arpa cat skiing is definitely a no-frills set-up for adventure seekers where it's all about the great ski and snowboard terrain, and the ratings reflect this. The ratings provided are relative to other international cat skiing and heli skiing operations, so don’t interpret that Arpa is a poor operation. Arpa Cat Skiing is a fabulously fun day out and it's just that it’s low key and very different to the luxury cat ski operations in Canada that have all the bells and whistles. As a guide to the ratings, a 5/5 equates to absolutely phenomenal, 4/5 is excellent, whilst 3/5 is still a very good score.

Pros

  • This is a delightfully unique experience. The cat skiing is an adventure in itself and the views are amazing, but there’s also something very special about hanging out at the refugio for an après drink. And if you stay at the Casa San Regis hacienda, this will just top off a truly distinctive Chilean experience.
  • Ski Arpa has some fabulously challenging alpine terrain for cat skiing, although they can provide easier lines if you don't want to ride narrow chutes. The amazing terrain has vertical runs of up to about 900 metres of fall line skiing. There are minimal traverses and no run outs, just pure steep pitched riding.
  • The steep pitches can often be negotiated because the snow-pack is reasonably stable.
  • Ski Arpa is inexpensive especially when you compare it to the cost of Chile heli skiing or cat skiing Canada. Accommodation in nearby Los Andes and San Estaban is also really economical when compared to the lodging at the ski resorts. The whole vacation package is inexpensive, particularly if you can organise your own transport.
  • The guides are multi-lingual and English is the first language of many of the guides. There's no fear that you'll mistake “watch out for the roca” (rock) with “watch out for the roca” (cliff).
Cons
  • El Arpa only receives 5 metres of annual snowfall. The quality of the powder can be variable with anything from deep light pow to crust, spring corn or heavy cement. The snow is reasonably well retained thanks to high elevation, but without the trees, the powder is not protected from the sun and wind.
  • El Arpa cat ski operation is not always open, either because of the weather (and the treeless terrain which affords no protection from the elements), avalanche risk or because the road is not open after a storm. As you would with heli skiing outfits in alpine terrain, a flexible itinerary is required.
  • Access to Arpa has various complexities associated with it. Either enjoy the adventure of driving yourself up the rugged bumpy track or pay for someone else to get you there.
  • One of the Ski Arpa snowcats does not have a cabin on the back; just a platform.
  • Hiking is likely to be required to access La Cornisia which can be somewhat taxing, especially if you haven't acclimatised to the altitude. This isn’t really a con as the benefit of hiking is that you can get to much better lines.

Powder Snow
Like the rest of skiing in Chile, the quality and quantity of snow isn’t Arpa’s forte. Sometimes snow cover can be as issue considering the very rocky terrain, and sometimes a few of the chutes are not skiable. Also unlike Canadian cat skiing where there’s almost the expectation of guaranteed freshies (and deep powder), at Arpa the snow can be tracked and the emphasis isn’t always on getting freshies.

On the plus side, with altitudes of up to 3,623 metres and primarily south facing slopes, the snow remains in reasonable shape considering the sometimes warm temps in the valley.
Overall Terrain
At 4,000 acres, the size of the terrain is small in comparison to typical Canada cat skiing tenures and heli ski terrain. It is however comparable to many US cat skiing operations. The size of the terrain means that if it hasn't snowed recently, fresh tracks may not be on offer.

On the plus side (depending on your leg fitness!!) the runs are long, especially if there’s snow cover down to the refugio. Another pro is that they can split each snowcat into two groups if there are riders of different ability levels.
Alpine Terrain
The alpine terrain is varied and has lots of features in the form of rocks, cornices, and rollers to launch off. There are also various long open bowls that funnel into wide gullies where speedsters can let the boards fly. The Arpa alpine terrain only loses half a mark because the tenure size is not huge.
Tree Skiing
When it comes to tree skiing there’s nada.
Strong Intermediate Terrain

Some of the bowls are steep-ish yet featureless in parts, and with consistent powder these could be tackled by strong intermediate riders. However other elements of the Arpa terrain wouldn’t be conducive to intermediates, such as some difficult entries and the many terrain features. Also it’s rare that Ski Arpa has silky ego powder and the inconsistent snow can make it challenging for most intermediates.
Advanced Terrain
Most advanced skiers and boarders will find the Arpa terrain incredibly satisfying considering the long steep alpine slopes.
Expert & Extreme Terrain

There are generally lots of features to launch off, and depending on the amount of snow cover, Arpa has some nice steep chutes of varying widths. They definitely get slides but unlike lots of cat and heli skiing outfits that gets huge dumps of snow, the snowpack is reasonably stable so it’s often possible to ride it.
Guiding
The guides all seemed to be very personable chaps. The guiding was quite relaxed with nothing too fancy and very simple instructions, but we had confidence in the guides’ abilities and that they were looking after our safety. The ski area is not huge so the guides know the Arpa cat skiing terrain really well.
Snowcat
One of the Ski Arpa snowcats does not have a cabin on the back. Guests stand on the back on a platform with railings for support. It can be very squishy if there is a full group, and the noise of the cat is not conducive to the social atmosphere you usually get with cat skiing. Another obvious con is the inability to sit down for a rest, warm up, or have a relaxing drink and snack.

The snowcat with the cabin was so much more comfortable than the open air cat. Whilst there was no fancy storage and the seating was sideways, at least it was nice to sit down and have a drink, take some layers off, and not use up unnecessary energy.
Avalanche Mitigation Strategies
It is likely that Ski Arpa puts considerable effort into minimising avalanche risk, but this wasn’t apparent to guests on the day or via their website. There was no mention of the avalanche risk, no background provided regarding terrain choice, and nothing evident in the field regarding avalanche mitigation except on one slope where we rode one at a time. The internet access up at the refugio is very very slow so the guides can check the weather but they would have difficulty with sophisticated avalanche forecasting, and there are no other operations in the area that they can share avalanche information with.

Ski Arpa provides avalanche beacons but you have to BYO shovel and probe. They have some emergency equipment such as oxygen and spinal boards, and they have their GPS dialled in with Santiago for helicopter evacuation if required.
Safety Briefing
The safety briefing went for about 30 seconds and covered the topic of don’t ski into the snowcat. It didn’t cover the use of beacons or what to do in the event of an avalanche. It appears that Arpa assumes that riders are experienced backcountry riders, so if you don't know how to use a beacon you’ll need to ask one of the guides.
Frills
Arpa has a few more trimmings on offer than they used to, but this is still a relatively low frills operation. It’s probably best if you BYO lunch, snacks and beverages. At the basic refugio they have snacks and soft drinks for sale, and for après ski they sell beers and sausages cooked on the BBQ.

Arpa now has a handful of Liberty demo skis that can be rented, which is a big plus.

You can buy some simple Arpa Cat Skiing logo apparel such as hoodies, T-shirts and ugly trucker hats!

Accommodation
not rated
If you want to do multiple days of cat skiing and avoid the drive up, it is possible to stay at the refugio if you’re hard core and don’t mind foregoing simple luxuries. The refugio is very basic and the generator is only on for a couple of hours each night.

We stayed down at the lovely Casa San Regis.
Value for Money
This cat skiing is inexpensive relative to Canadian cat skiing, especially those that incorporate backcountry lodging. With Arpa you can stay in great value for money lodging in Los Andes, San Estaban, or Santiago.

The Arpa cat skiing price is similar to some of the simple US cat skiing operations, and the vertical on offer is comparable too. The bonus with Arpa is that additional runs are very cheap.

It’s great that any additional trimmings are charged for which means you’re not paying for things you don’t necessarily need. This includes the transport which as to be expected is pricey unless you’re travelling with a group.

Notes Regarding Review

The review is largely based on our experience, but also on discussions with staff, former guests, and information available on their website. Our review has some limitations as it’s not possible to ski every run and in all possible snow and weather conditions. Every guide is somewhat different and we acknowledge that everyone’s experience will be slightly different. The ratings are from our perspective only. Check out our cat ski ratings to see how Ski Arpa fares against other backcountry operations.

The photos are not taken using professional riders, but rather aim to show an example of a real experience.

Amenities

In general terms, Ski Arpa is a no-frills operation, so don't expect over the top facilities and services.

Day Lodge

After the huge disappointment of losing his ski area and lodge to a huge avalanche, Toni Sponar made sure that the Ski Arpa day lodge was safe from avalanches. He built two small stone buildings into the side of the hill, almost hidden from above.

One of the buildings has toilet facilities which are possibly the most glamorous toilet facilities I've ever seen attached to a cat ski operation. It even has plumbing!

Eating On Mountain

Eating at Arpa is a far cry from the grand restaurant at Portillo. For many of the Arpa packages, a boxed lunch is included.

There is complimentary tea and coffee at the day lodge but don't expect a caffè latte. Beers and BBQ hot dogs for après might be for sale. These can be enjoyed out the front of the lodge whilst taking in the spectacular vistas of the valley and the mountains.

Arpa Ski Rentals

It's likely that the variable snow conditions at Ski Arpa will be more enjoyed with a pair of fat skis. If you need equipment rentals and need advice regarding this, you can submit a booking request.

Ski Arpa Retail

Arpa sells some limited souvenirs such as trucker caps, hoodies, and short and long sleeve t-shirts at very reasonable prices (pay in cash - pesos or US dollars). The t-shirts are not guaranteed to make you look like a hottie, but they are a great souvenir of an awesome day skiing or boarding in the Andes!

A Chile Must-Do

17/10/2013
You don’t go to Arpa cat skiing with the expectation of being pampered. Nor do you go with the anticipation of using your beloved snorkel. You go with the prospect of a great adventure and skiing or snowboarding your butt off!

The sensational terrain is the highlight of Arpa, with steep fall-line runs that will potentially destroy your thighs. Most of the terrain is well suited to advanced riders, but for experts there are great rock bands that provide a variety of lines, some of which could be categorised as triple blacks. Another great thing about Arpa cat skiing is that it provides extraordinary value for money.

Cons: it is either tricky or costly to get to Arpa; the operation is heavily weather-dependent and the road may be closed for a couple of days after a heavy snowfall; safety briefings are absent and safety strategies are not obvious to guests; the snowcats are very no-frills and one is a stand-up affair so there’s no chance to rest the legs if they’re weary; and Arpa only has an average snowfall of 5 metres per season. Like elsewhere in Chile (especially where there is treeless terrain), the quality of the snow can be incredibly variable, but at least you know that there are no crowds to track out the snow.

Staying in accommodation in the Los Andes area provides a great opportunity to get away from the ski resorts and experience some of the real culture of Chile. An Arpa cat skiing experience is definitely worth adding to your Chile ski holiday.

The most significant reason to book a trip to Arpa is that the experience is unique. Open top snow-cat rides to the tree-less peaks. Hiking up guanaco trails to get to the last run. Even the drive into Arpa is in itself a novel experience.

The guides are experienced and professional. They'll analyze the group and take you to appropriate terrain. On the day we went there were a couple skiers who had NEVER skied off piste before. I certainly wouldn't recommend Arpa as anyone's first off piste experience, but I was impressed that they could accomodate such relative beginners.

The snow itself wasn't fantastic when we went, it hadn't snowed recently. But the guides obviously know the terrain well, they found us some good snow, even if it wasn't deep powder.

I would definitely return.

Arpa

21/04/2013
We spent five days at Ski Arpa (booked through POWDER HOUNDS) for snow cat skiing in the shadows of Mt Aconcagua, highest mountain in the Southern Hemisphere. We skied with the owner legendary Tony Sponar who shares the same name and background as my Australian sking icon and friend, the late Tony Sponar.

Our accommodation was at the historic Chilean Hacienda Casa San Regis and our hosts Alex & Marcella were most hospitable. Enjoyed the authentic Chilean cuisine which was great value with inclusive Chilean wine at dinner.

Unfortunately we visited in a poor season with substandard snow.

Powderhounds Review of Arpa Portillo extension
Whilst Arpa cat skiing is unlikely to deliver the deep snow you would find in North America, it offers huge vertical on untracked creamy snow.

The terrain is quite steep and has some great features with a variety of cliffs and chutes.

After a great week of warming up at Portillo, Arpa provides the perfect way to end the trip on a high note.

We stayed at the Casa San Regis and thoroughly enjoyed this place. Great hosts, lovely historical property and superb food.

Ski Arpa

Ski Arpa is a magical place. It is a truly wild experience. Climbing out of the Aconcagua Vally, Arpa is accessed by a very adventurous 4 X 4 mining road. If this does not get your juices flowing the terrain at Arpa certainly will. The area is absolutely massive and offers magnificent views of Aconcagua, the tallest peak in the Americas, as well as the Pacific Ocean.

Run by the legendary Toni Sponar, Arpa is a ski and snowboarders paradise. 1000 meter runs with tons of nooks and crannies. There is absolutely limitless touring potential as well.

If you are visiting Chile to ski or snowboard make it a point to visit Arpa!

An authentic Chilean experience

12/08/2011
If you are an advanced skier, El Arpa is a must do if you visit Chile. The runs are a leg burning 1000m of vertical on average and with only 1 snowcat operating the terrain, the freshies last for weeks.

We stayed at the Casa San Regis in Los Andes which is perfectly situated for day trips to Arpa. This place provides you with a real Chilean experience.

Be sure to book in advance as the capacity is limited to just 12 people a day.
