Went on a blue sky ski day with no wind mid week. Not an Epic pass mountain, 2 for one Tuesdays and still felt like we owned the mountain. Enough terrain for advanced skiers to push themselves and amazing runs for the green/blue skiers. This is a side trip 2/3 day mountain, if your in the area. You won’t regret it as the drive up has amazing view. For little kids, their enclosed magic carpet lift may have been the best I’ve seen.

Rose isn't a destination resort like Squaw Valley or Northstar, but it has a special appeal for two opposite groups. Beginners and experts. I think the beginner terrain is some of the best I've seen anywhere-long mellow slopes with the best snow quality in the region. For experts, there are the Chutes, which are worth a side trip for experts skiing Squaw. Just gotta make sure it's not too windy up there and it takes a while for them to fill in well, but on a good day they are comparable to steeps at the steepest western resorts. From an intermediate standpoint, I would say Rose is a very nice local hill for Reno skiers, but perhaps doesn't compare with some of the larger resorts in that category. After a warm storm with high snow levels, Rose will have the best conditions in North Tahoe, but don't go if it's windy.

Mount Rose is the closest resort to most of Reno. (With the exception of the northwest, which is closer to Northstar and Squaw.)
This has been one of my main resorts in my life. It is very family friendly, and caters to all levels reasonably well for a smallish resort. The new beginner area is great, and the Chutes have some of the gnarliest and steepest terrain in Tahoe.
However, it's a far cry from a nice resort. The lodges' food is mediocre at best, and get very crowded on weekends. While some of the intermediate runs are fun, they are few and far between and get can clogged. Also, there is no lodging at Mount Rose, you have to stay in Reno.
Mount rose is good for advanced skiiers. Try any of the black diamond runs dropping off of Kit Carson Traverse for good snow and to escape the crowds. My personal favorites are Sunset and Greg's Gamble. Intermediates will get bored quickly, as will experts, as many times the Chutes are closed.

We thought that Mt Rose would just be a little hick Nevada ski resort. We’d heard it was very family oriented and ideal for beginners and intermediates, with just a little steep terrain. It was definitely all of that, plus more. The Chutes in particular was a delightful surprise package.

We visited on two separate days, and on both occasions it was living up to its nickname “Mt Blows”. One day, one of the 6-packs was on wind hold for quite a while.
