Where to Stay in Obertauern Ski Resort
The Obertauern valley comprises numerous clusters of accommodation centred on the three main lift base areas within the ski resort. Like the glorious Kühtai to the west near Innsbruck, the local topography allows the majority of Obertauern accommodation to be delightfully ski-in ski-out, offering the ultimate is convenience. The village's location at the top of the pass at 1,738m altitude, ensures it is beautifully snow-covered throughout winter.
Alternatives to the ski resort lodgings include the charming town of Radstadt to the north or Mauterndorf to the south.

Best Obertauern Accommodation
The resort village of Obertauern is in the perfect location to provide nearly 100% ski-in ski-out convenience, no matter where you are staying. With the ski resort spreading either of the high mountain pass, the village lines the road beneath & a well-planned series of lifts, trails & bridges link it all together brilliantly for skiers & just barely ok for snowboarders!
Obertauern has two main parts to the village that spread right through the broad saddle in the middle of the lifts & pistes. The original Obertauern is lower down the saddle with the main lift accesses being the modern combi Grünwaldkopfbahn to the sunny side & the Zehnerkarbahn gondola to the shady side. The village here is spread out along the road & is not as appealing when compared to the more convivial cluster of accommodation further up the road (south) at the highest point in the pass.
Amongst the upper village lifts, numerous lodging options provide immediate access to lifts & slopes. The Hotel Steiner, Hotel Panorama, Sporthotel Cinderella & Hotel Tauernglöckl, plus the combined Hotel Zehnerkar & Hotel Obertauern are all in super positions. One of the best value, and still in a location just across a footbridge from the slopes & lifts is the Hotel Kärntnerland. And back along the road toward the lower is the equally well placed, Hotel Römerhof, with its superb 4-star rooms & facilities.
For apartments in great locations try the new FOXY Obertauern Hotel Apartments or the more traditional Landhaus St Georg. On the other side of the pass, & with superb lift, piste & après ski access, the 5-star Hotel Kesselspitze is awesome.
Away from the village higher up the sunny side of the mountain, the 5-star Hotel das Seekarhaus provides the perfect location, facilities & exclusive first access to ski lifts.
Between Obertauern & Radstadt is Untertauern. Several comfortable hotels provide the digs, but it is in a neither ‘here nor there’ position. Stay here if you can’t find anything in the ski resort, but also consider Radstadt in the valley has it has a lot more services & options on offer.

Staying in Radstadt
The town of Radstadt to the north of Obertauern, is the best ‘overflow’ or ‘value’ overnight location. A full-service town, it has the train station & bus links to everywhere, a not-too-shabby local ski hill (Radstadt-Altenmarkt), interesting history complete with several sections of its old town wall & fortifications, plus après in the town square at night. Throw in plenty of bars & restaurants, Radstadt looks rather good. We have stayed in Radstadt previously and loved it.
Accommodation in Radstadt includes numerous hotels in the old town (try the Hotel Stegerbräu) & loads of guesthouses on the outskirts. For large, new, self-contained apartments at a great price, Tauernresidence Radstadt is located just out of town near the local ski lifts and on the road to Obertauern.
The Landhaus Aubauerngut on the edge of Radstadt is wonderful. Large clean rooms all with views, an awesome host, delicious buffet breakfast with fresh eggs done as you like, some wonderful canine friends & a menagerie of farm animals including miniature horses, pigs, chickens, sheep & rabbits make for a super stay. Best if with a car or prepared to walk a little to the bus (we did, but then again, we are super tough!). Complimentary krapfen (jam or custard filled donuts) for a midday snack totally won me over.

Mauterndorf Accommodations
To the south of Obertauern, Mauterndorf is an option, however the proximity of the Grosseck Speiereck ski resort to the town may limit availability through the season. It is nonetheless a charming town, with wonderful traditional architecture throughout and overlooked by the impressive castle, Burg Mauterndorf. Being an Austrian ski town, the selection & quality of accommodations is impressive.
