Where to Stay in the Skicircus
The question of where to stay in the Skicircus is made doubly hard because of the ski resort's sheer size, number of villages and range of lift base terminals. The villages of Saalbach, Hinterglemm, Leogang (2 base areas!) & Fieberbrunn have a huge range of hotels, apartments & chalets. Each has their merits.
To confuse matters further, other quieter locations for Skicircus accommodation like Vorderglemm, Viehhofen & up-valley from Hinterglemm toward Lengau, will appeal to those less interested in party time. Nearby Zell am See makes a great base for short visits.
To simplify things, look at it this way:
- For lively après & village surrounds, stay in Saalbach. If there is no availability, try do day trips from Zell am See, which has a fun centre of town.
- If looking for a central location with a balance of ski-in ski-out access to the entire resort, plus a balance of lively & sedate apres ski, then Hinterglemm is for you.
- Wanting quick access to the best off-piste & freeride terrain? Stay in Fieberbrunn.
- For quieter ski-in ski-out lodgings stay near the lift base at Leogang.
- Seeking a traditional Austrian rural stay, find lodgings on the margins near Vorderglemm or Lengau.

Best Saalbach Accommodations
Whilst much of Saalbach is in shadow for winter, it is the absolute best place to stay to experience the Skicircus in all its glory. Three gondolas extend in all directions directly out of town and the amount of hotel & apartment accommodation, bars & restaurants is dizzying! The best of them include: Alpinresort Sport Hotel & Spa, Hotel Post & Hotel Saalbacher Hof. Some of the best apartments are at the ski-in Bolodges Apartments.
Hinterglemm Accommodation
Hinterglemm is sunny through the middle of the day in winter and most of the accommodation is 'ski-in' or damn close to it! On & off-piste slopes allow skiing right into the heart of town from both sides of the valley. Smaller than Saalbach, but still with a diverse collection of hotels, restaurants, bars, ski lifts and a few shops here and there, Hinterglemm makes a great base to explore the Skicircus. Try the Hotel Glemmtalerhof, Alpin Juwel Hotel & the ski-in Adler Resort Apartments for larger groups.
Leogang Accommodation
Leogang has two separate Skicircus base areas centred on the Steinberg and Asitz gondolas respectively, with the Asitz area the larger of the two. A range of exceptional Skicircus Saalbach accommodation is available, some of it 'ski in'. Leogang is close to a railway station that occasionally services trains from Kitzbuhel and Zell am See. Try the Tarlack Apartments.
Best Fieberbrunn Accommodation
At Fieberbrunn, the sunniest of the four major Skicircus Saalbach villages, the best accommodation is near the gondola terminals above town. A range of hotels and apartments offer 'ski-in' convenience. Fieberbrunn is close to a railway station that regularly services trains from Kitzbuhel & Zell am See. Try the Hotel TUI BLUE Fieberbrunn.
Lodgings Away from the Villages
Several Skicircus accommodation options in the Saalbach-Hinterglemm valley are available away from the ‘major’ centres. Some require a bus ride to access the main lifts and piste, i.e. Viehhofen down valley at the end of the free ski bus route. Others have lift access nearby, i.e. Vorderglemm near the new Schoenleiten gondola.
Above Vorderglemm, the Mountainlovers Berghotel SeidlAlm provides an exceptional Austrian alpine lodge experience. Amazing views, food & hospitality, plus expansive views guarantee a memorable stay.
In the opposite direction, toward the head of the valley and off the ski bus route towards Lengau, are some choice ski in, ski-out accommodations near the Zwoelfer-Nord & Hochalm gondola. Additional accommodation is ‘randomly’ located along the road, much of it 'ski in' via the off-piste terrain. Try the Hotel Marten & Hotel Eder Michaela.
Staying in Zell am see
Zell am See is another option to use as a base to explore all the lift interlinked resorts including Kaprun-Kitzsteinhorn. The bus trip from Zell am See to the gondola base at Vorderglemm takes only about 20mins or you can even use the lifts & pistes these days, made easier if you stay in one the mountain top hotels on Schmitten. The central part of town is beautiful & lively, plus the lakeside location delightful on a sunny day.
