Project X Cat Skiing Adventure
Overview
Are you prepared to be a part of one of the world's newest guided cat skiing adventure? Project X is in the snowiest part of the Caucasus in an untouched area, devoid of humans & full of deep powder snow. Come and be a part of history! In just its second season, Project X is still a ski adventure of the highest order!
The Project X area is located in the remote mountains midway between the large city of Batumi & the ski resort of Goderdzi. The new area was scouted years ago but is the last to be opened up to cat-skiing. There are tree runs, open slopes and lots of snow! A new area means a lot of adventure and uncertainties. Therefore, the freeriders involved need to be able to draw on sufficient experience. It will also make sense to carry skins in your backpack. Since the area is undeveloped, and even though the guides are highly experienced, no one has ever skied this region and the guides who know their way around have only spent one season here! Surprises are possible, even probable!
Project X Tour Packages
Packages includes return airport transfers, 6-nights of lodging in simple shared, lodge-style accommodation, all meals whilst on the tour & 5-6 days of fully guided cat skiing. Whilst dependent on weather & the fitness of the group, during a normal cat ski day at least 10 runs can be completed for a skiable vertical of between 3,000 & 5,000m. Of course, with the unknowns of Project X, the vertical may be less ......... or more!
The main cat-ski season runs from early December to mid-March. Basic Itinerary is: Sunday - Arrival Georgia, airport pickup & transfer, arrival at lodge, dinner, safety meeting; Monday-Saturday - Cat skiing & ski touring Saturday afternoon/evening - After skiing transfer to the airport & departure. Location
Located in southwestern Georgia, the closest major Georgian cities to Project X is Batumi. The Project X lodge is off the road (northside) to the Goderdzi ski resort from Batumi. A pick up and return transfer to the cat-skiing area from Batumi (BUS) (or Kutaisi (KUT)) airport is included in the tariff. For more information on how to get to Georgia & the gateway airports, see our Bakhmaro & Adjara Location page.
Snow & Terrain
The location of Project X is in the 'Little' Caucasus of Southern Georgia, relatively close to the Black Sea. The region has Georgia's best combination of awesome terrain, plus deep, consistent snow-pack. The proximity of the sea to the high peaks of around 2,700m provides abundant moisture, and when combined with cold temperatures, deep powder from December to early March.
During the first winter season (22/23) a large part of the new area was explored, but there are still areas that not yet skied. There are tree runs and open slopes and, above all, lots of snow! On bad weather days the skiing can start directly from the hut. On days with nice weather the snowcats can go up to 2,600 m. The view of the Black Sea is included.
High levels of snowfall, especially at the beginning of the season provide generally excellent conditions. Tree runs at nearby Bakhmaro with names like 'Big in Japan' , indicate the potential quality of the ski experience here. having been there, we can vouch for it! The numbers of return clientele are another indicator! Cat skiing in the main part of the season at Bakhmaro & the Adjara Wolfsbed Hut can get booked out quickly - another reason to give Project X a go!
Lodging & Food
Accommodation at Project X was built in 2022 and is a simple alpine lodge consisting of two large double-storey cabins situated in an open meadow below the tree line. The area is protected from wind and avalanches. The two cabins are connected by a living and dining area. Below the dining area there are 3 bathrooms, each with a toilet, sink and shower. There is talk of building a sauna, but no promises have been made!
The cabins have a total of 8 rooms for 2 groups. The rooms have bunk beds and are designed for 2, 3 or 4 riders. Despite the simple accommodation, a certain basic level of comfort is guarnateed. Whilst this is 'back to the roots' of the Powderproject operation, and despite the remote location, there is heating, wifi, ample hot water supply and electricity. And anyway, it's all about powder...
For sustenance, a local team of cooks and kitchen helpers prepare the food fresh every day. In the morning there is a rich breakfast with muesli, fresh fruit, egg dishes, homemade jam, homemade bread and local specialties. The group will take a packed lunch for eating 'in the field', so there is no time lost during the day. On bad weather days, we can always come back to the accommodation and warm up with a hot soup or Burano (a warm cheese dish). In the evening, typically Georgian cooking is served, including classics such as lobio (traditional bean stew in a clay pot), khinkhali (filled dumplings), tolma (stuffed wine or cabbage leaves) and the famous khachapuri (cheese bread). Georgian cuisine is hearty and versatile. The meals are served in bowls and on plates, so that everyone can take what they like. Various special diets (vegetarian, gluten-free, lactose) can also be catered for.
