Val d'Isere Accommodation - Where to Stay
What was once a small alpine farming village in an extremely remote valley, Val d'Isere (the town) has developed into an extensive, modern, ski resort that maintains some of its village feel and sense of tradition. The 'old town' is undoubtedly pretty, with quaint stone properties lining narrow snow-filled streets, topped by the requisite church steeple against a backdrop of mountains. Val d'Isere (the valley!) is made up of several charming hamlets, namely Le Crêt, Le Joseray, Le Châtelard, La Legettaz, Le Laisinant, Le Daille & Le Fornet. Development of the main village has essentially consumed Le Crêt, Le Joseray, Le Châtelard, and La Legettaz. Ski lifts & valley trails serve Val d’Isère's main village centre, tiny Le Laisinant and the outlying hamlets of La Daille & Le Fornet.
Check out the Val d'Isere Village Map below.
There are about 50 hotels throughout Val d’Isère ski resort with a vast range of rooms, suites & apartments available; most of which in the 3 & 5-star range. Generally, hotel tariffs are quite high relative to most other French & European ski resorts. A plethora of luxury 5-star hotels are clustered in prime locations next to the ski lifts & shopping precinct in the central village. Beyond them along the main road and the snow-filled village laneways, are numerous expensive 3-star offerings, plus a handful of 4-stars in amongst the private chalets & apartments. There are also a few affordable 3-star hotels for those on a tight budget, but they are rare and can be difficult to secure a booking. If hotels are not available, the village has a vast quantity of chalet (including some incredibly luxurious ones) and a self-catering apartment (condos) accommodation available for holiday rental, but care should be taken to read the reviews of the cheaper ones to ensure you are not disappointed! Beyond the centre village, La Daille has a few hotels on the main road plus hundreds of apartments. Further afield toward the head of the valley Le Fornet is comparatively quiet and consists of one hotel, and a handful of traditional chalets & apartments .
For the quietest, upper mountain, overnight experience, the only place to stay is Le Refuge de Solaise, situated high above the village at 2,551m elevation at the top of the Solaise gondola. Hardly a refuge in the traditional sense, it is a high-class mountain lodge that won’t disappoint. From the refuge you can truly look down upon the great unwashed!

Affordable Accommodation in Val d’Isere
There is some affordable accommodation in Val d’Isère but it can be hard to find. And note also, the term ‘affordable’ is only relative to the rest of the prices in the ski resort. Surprisingly the central village has a few excellent options, including some for self-catering. By and large, the best times to visit for affordable prices are from the second week of January to the first week of February, and then in the last 3 weeks of March and into April. The Hotel Les Crêtes Blanches takes the chocolates for the best combination of affordability, location, quiet, convenience and comfort. The hotel is simple compared to others nearby, but sometimes that’s all one needs! several others are available too. We can vouch for the quality & affordability of the Victoria Lodge Hotel, having stayed there during our last visit.

Alternative Accommodation Close to the Resort
Whilst staying in Val d’Isere itself should be the goal of anyone skiing the resort, if for whatever reason you are unable to, day-tripping (either by driving your rental car or skiing across from Tignes) is a good way to ski here without breaking the bank.
With a rental car, accommodation can be sought anywhere between Val d’Isere & Bourg St Maurice. You can use the lodging as a base for a ski safari in the region. Our rock-solid guarantee, cheapest and best accommodation in the Haute Tarentaise includes: the Le Dôme Hotel & Restaurant in Les Boisses (Tignes 1800), the Le Perce Neige d'Alicia Guesthouse & Bar (in Viclaire, just past Sainte-Foy-Tarentaise), and close to Bourg St Maurice & La Rosiere, the Auberge de Jeunesse HI Séez hostel. All three are either on, or just off the road to Val d’Isere.
Accommodation is always way cheaper in neighbouring Tignes. Skiing to Val d’Isere requires an early start to make the most of a day-trip. To ponder the complete list of hotels, apartments, hostels, guesthouses & chalets in the Tignes ski resort, search & book via our Tignes Ski Accommodation Listings page.
