Aprica ski resort rises on north-facing slopes above the town of the same name in the Valtellina of Lombardy, northern Italy.

Where is Aprica, Italy?

Located 17km by winding road south of wonderful Tirano, Aprica ski resort can be accessed from Milan via Sondrio or Edolo. Aprica is 160km north-east of Milan & close to the Swiss border. The ski resort is only 72km by road south of St Moritz. The rail journey from Switzerland into Italy is sensational & worthy of a day or two away from the slopes, or to check out the off-piste freeride terrain up at Diavolezza-Lagalb.

Flights to Aprica

The gateway airports to Aprica are Milan Malpensa (MXP) for most international travelers & the minor airports of Milan Linate (LIN) & Milan Bergamo (Orio al Serio Airport) (BGY) for Europe & UK flight origins only.

Airport & Hotel Transfers

Private transfers are available from Milan to Aprica & nearby ski resorts. Whilst the Powderhounds recommend taking public transport wherever possible, some will find the journey to Aprica awkward. For speed, efficiency & for groups of 3 or more, cost effectiveness, a private transfer may appeal.

Train & Bus Transport to Aprica

Aprica is mid-way between two train stations - Tresenda (14km) & Edolo (15km). Both are on entirely different train lines. Tresenda is on the Milan - Tirano line. Edolo is the terminus station on a spur line running north from Brescia. The large city of Brescia is on the Milan -Venice line.

The simplest journey by train for international travellers is from Milan Malpensa airport. The train journey is in two stages toward Tirano. From the airport, he Malpensa Express rolls into the beautiful Milano Centrale station at regular intervals. If one has time, a wander around Milano Centrale reveals all its outrageous pomp & grandeur. From Milan the hourly train to Tirano takes less than 2½hr to make the trip from bustling city to mountainous apple orchard country. Get off at Tresenda station where the A41 bus from Sondrio to Aprica will be along soon to take you the rest of the way.

By bus from Tresenda train station to Aprica on the A41 bus is about 25min. By bus from Tirano station takes around 35min to Aprica where it continues to Edolo. The bus then returns to Aprica, taking 25min (quicker the hill - hang on tight!).

Driving to Aprica Ski Resort

Milan Malpensa airport is around 180km by road from Aprica. The journey should be comfortably undertaken in under 3hr. Alternative routes via Bergamo or Brescia & Edolo are longer in distance, but similar in time. The road from Edolo to Aprica is easier to drive than the serious climb up from Tresenda or Tirano. Note that once off the multi-lane motorways, narrow single lane roads in the region can carry alot of traffic at some times of the day & journey times can increase

St Moritz in Switzerland is only 72km north by road (1½hr drive) via the Tirano and the spectacular Bernina Pass. Check road conditions before making the journey and if in doubt take the train.

Car Rental & Hire

All the major airports & cities have car hire available. The cheapest rates are at Milan Malpensa airport. The airport also has the easiest pick up & drop off process. We do not recommend renting a car from downtown Milan as the drive & navigation out can be hectic to say the least. Be careful at Milan Malpensa that you are not duped into getting extra 'junk' insurance on the rental car, plus ensure the car is in some way winterised (snow tyres/chains/alpine diesel/alpine windscreen fluid etc).

Nearby Ski Resorts

Aprica is in the Valtellina region which includes numerous well known (& some not so well known) ski resorts. Favoloso Bormio, snow-laden Livigno, quiet Cima Piazzi-San Colombano & the superb Santa Caterina are all a short drive away to the north. The huge Tonale ski resort is 30min drive east via Edolo to Temu. Beyond Tonale is Pejo, Folgarida Marilleva & Madonna di Campiglio. North of Aprica is Switzerland and the brilliant St Moritz ski resorts of Diavolezza Lagalb, Corviglia & Corvatsch.
