Where to Stay in the 4 Vallees

Spread across the 4 Vallèes ski resort are a multitude of accommodation options & styles. In the ‘1st Valley’, stylish Verbier reigns supreme as the number one place to stay in the 4 Valleys. It does comes with a price tag though. Below it, the town of Le Chable provides the budget alternative without losing too much in the way of access to the snow & terrain. In the ‘2nd Valley’, La Tzoumaz is a quiet village with direct access to a wide variety of terrain. In the ‘3rd Valley’, Nendaz, the resort’s second largest village after Verbier, is opposite the smaller Veysonnaz. Higher up the valley, Siviez provides the best overall access to the vast ski terrain but has only a limited number of accommodations available. Lastly, in the ‘4th Valley’, the 'Thyon' villages of Thyon-Les Masses, Thyon-Les Collons & Thyon 2000 are spread up the mountainside as far away from Verbier as one can get and still be skiing the same resort! Day-trippers can look to stay in the major town of Sion, down in the Rhone River valley. Sion has the benefit of great transport links, sightseeing amongst its many castles & old town, plus affordable lodgings.

Check out the following list of our best villages (in rank order starting with the best) for various categories.

Best Ski Accommodation in the 4 Vallèes

All the mountain villages, with the exception of Sion, have direct ski lift access to the resort and free shuttle buses connecting accommodation to the lift bases. Expect spanking views from every village except perhaps the low elevation Sion & Le Chable.

Siviez

At the head of the 3rd valley, and often called the crossroads of the 4-Vallèes, Siviez provides the most efficient access to the best freeride zones around Mont Fort, Nendaz & Veysonnaz & Thyon. At an altitude of 1730m, ski lifts depart in all directions. Staying in Siviez overnight isn’t easy, as it is relatively convoluted to get to without a car (via Nendaz) and has a limited number of apartments for rent that are rightfully popular. But it is possible & worth it if interested in having the best opportunity at fresh tracks. It’ll be easier of your wallet too! Try and stay at the Chez Chantal Apartments. If that fails, a short distance down the road is the excellent Gîte de Planchouet (a.ka. Planchouet Cottage) BnB.

Verbier

The best known of the 4 Vallees villages, Verbier is a stylish, beautifully designed town that avoids the architectural 'mis-steps' of the other alpine resort villages. It is also in a sunny south-westerly aspected location, making it one of the 'brighter' villages within the resort (if a sun-soaked village is important to you!) The best access to Verbier's sensational off-piste terrain is via the key Medran 1 & 2 gondolas which leave from the top of the village. So, if one has the cash, why would you stay anywhere else. For the ultimate in lux convenience, stay near the lifts at W Verbier or the more affordable Hotel Vanessa. Alternatives abound, many with their own shuttle bus (like the La Cordée des Alpes Hotel). As with the rest of the resort, holiday apartments & chalets (many fully catered), are common in Verbier. All are in the upper price bracket.

Le Châble

Staying down the mountain from Verbier in Le Châble can provide excellent value. Access to the village is awesome by the train from Martigny, but with an altitude of only 821m, don’t expect too much snow in the town. Getting to the ski terrain isn’t an issue considering the efficient daytime gondola direct to Verbier village & the evening bus service that runs between Le Chable & Verbier. Plus, Le Châble is at the base of the Bruson ski area too. Try the superb Üna Lodge or one of the many local BnBs in the town.

La Tzoumaz

Another alternative to high priced, low availability Verbier is La Tzoumaz (also referred to as Les Mayens des Riddes). Lift linked into Verbier, staying here may not provide the fastest access to Mont Fort, but it can be easy on the wallet whilst still providing an authentic Swiss alpine village experience. Try the newly refurbished Hotel de La Poste - great rooms & food, plus close to the lifts & valley return trail.

Nendaz

After Verbier, the second largest & second ‘liveliest’ of the 4-Vallèes villages is Nendaz. Located at 1,400m altitude in the ‘3rd valley’, Nendaz is easy to get to from Sion, has full services, loads of apartments & chalets to choose from, plus a few well-placed hotels near the gondola. If arriving last minute, two hotels next to the gondola station & top bus stop worth considering are the Hotel Edelweisss & the new (ish) MAD Mount Hotel & Spa. We stayed in the cosy Hotel Edelweiss had great food, & a healthy après ski session that ended at a good time to hit the pillow and comfortably get first tracks in the morning. For value, try the cosy & quiet Boutique Hôtel le Déserteur or the perfectly positioned Hotel Les Etagnes. For a tad more comfort, the Hotel Nendaz 4 Vallées is the best choice.

Veysonnaz

On the opposite side of the 3rd valley, Veysonnaz is a wide-spread collection of chalets & apartments lining the mountainside. Located at 1,400m altitude, most of the accommodations lack any real charm, but will be more affordable than other locations closer to Verbier. For the ultimate location right next to the gondola station, try the ski-in Hôtel Magrappé.

Thyon Les Collons & Thyon 2000

At the north-eastern extreme of the ski area in the 4th valley, the villages of Thyon-Les Collons (1,800m altitude) & Thyon 2000 (ironically located at 2,100m altitude!) are widely spread across a pleasant, forested mountain side. Accommodation tends to be self-contained chalets & apartments. The standout lodgings are at the superb Hotel La Cambuse, located directly across the road from the Les Collons ski lifts and slopes. Thyon is a collection of dated resort-style apartments, but in a prime alpine setting with wonderful access to the slopes, particularly for novices & families..

Sion

Sion is the gateway city for the northern villages of the resort and a sightseeing location of note. Access to the city is perfect via the train. Buses from the train station make regular journeys to the ski lifts at Nendaz, Veysonnaz, Mayens de l'Ours, Les Collons & Thyon. The city centre has full services and some comfortable, well-priced hotels (including the Hôtel Elite, Hôtel du Rhône), a few lovely guesthouse rooms (like Chambre d'hôte Valère) and an affordable youth hostel with private rooms (Sion Youth Hostel). Upon arrival at Sion, you will immediately notice the castles looming over the town; there are all up - Majorie Castle, Valère Castle, and Tourbillon Castle. They make a classically European diversion on a down day.

Sion can also be used as a base to explore resorts up & down the Rhone Valley, utilising the train to get to Crans Montana, Aletsch Arena & even Zermatt.
