Alp Bach Madarao

Alp Bach Madarao

Lodge Alp Bach Madarao is a lovely European inspired pension that features a communal lounge with high ceilings, comfortable sofas and a large circular fireplace. The lodge has simple guest rooms with 2, 3 or 4 single beds and all rooms have a bathroom. Alp Bach is owned and run by a lovely Japanese family.

Where is Lodge Alp Bach Madarao?

Alp Bach Madarao is conveniently located just across the road from the slopes of the Madarao Ski Resort so it’s almost ski-in ski-out. Walk across the road and you can ski down a beginner run to the lifts, and ski back to the lodge (so long as you have wax on your skis or board).

It is situated in the lower part of the village, about 1km from the main part of the resort. If you want to go out for dinner you can walk up to the bars and restaurants. For some places, walking up the side of the slope provides a short cut.

Arrival and departure shuttles are provided between the Madarao Kogen bus stop and the lodge, and shuttles can be provided to the ski rental shop.

Rooms

The lodge has only 9 rooms, which all have a pre-fab bathroom with shower and bath, and single western beds.

  • Twin rooms – 2 single beds
  • Triple rooms – 3 single beds
  • Quad room – 4 single beds

Facilities & Services

The lounge area is a highlight of the lodge. With plenty of European influence, there are heated stone floors, a large circular fireplace, and large picture windows that look out onto a snowy landscape. There are large sofas and other seating so you can relax and gather with friends or family.

Other amenities and services:

  • Bilingual host
  • Free shuttle from/to Madarao Kogen bus station
  • Discounted lift ticket sales
  • Lockable ski storage (so long as your skis aren’t too wide)
  • Snowboard storage
  • Drying area
  • Non-smoking property
  • Car parking onsite
  • Free wifi

Dining

Breakfast can be included. Breakfast varies each day although it generally includes a hot dish, soup, salad, cereal, toast and juice and coffee.

Dinner can be pre-booked. It is generally a 3 course set menu of European cuisine with a Japanese influence. There is a selection of wines available for purchase.

What a Find

18/04/2024
We managed to snag a last minute room due to a cancellation, which was pretty lucky considering this lodge is usually booked out well in advance. It looked like a boutique hotel but it was more than just a hotel and had the feel of a friendly lodge. Firstly Naoko the host was a delight, and warm hospitality was a feature of our stay. The ambience of the lounge was pleasant with its high ceilings and the feature fireplace, and a nice place to congregate. The Euro-style dining area was also lovely and we could chat to other guests over breakfast. It was refreshing that there were not just international guests but also some lovely Japanese guests.

Breakfast was very good and whilst we didn’t have dinner at the lodge, we’d heard that it was worthwhile.

We were able to pay cash to get discounted lift passes for Madarao/Tangram and it was worth it not just for the discount, but to also avoid having to line up at the Madarao ticket office.

The drying area worked really well, and the wifi was OK without being awesome.

Our room was in the basement and whilst it had a nice outlook, there was a little bit of noise transmission from scraping chairs above but it wasn’t a party lodge so this didn’t really matter. The room had plenty of space, the hydronic heating was really good, and the simple bathroom had a shower with amazing water pressure.

Location was very good, right across the road from the beginner slope. It was a bit of a walk to and from the main village in the evenings, but doable and a good way to stretch the legs after a day on the slopes.

We’d highly recommend staying here, that’s of course if you find availability for a room!
