Where is Muikamachi Hakkaisan?

The Muikamachi Hakkaisan Ski Resort is located 15km southeast of the city of Minamiuonuma in the Niigata Prefecture on the Honshu island of Japan. The ski resort is 13km northeast of the town of Muikamachi, 30km northeast of Yuzawa, and 228km northwest of Tokyo.

Driving to Hakkaisan

The bus timetables are a little hit and miss, so driving to Hakkaisan is the easiest way to get there. Or if you don’t have a car, it may be visited as part of a multi-resort tour.

The phone number of Hakkaisan Ski Resort is 025-775-3311 for GPS navigation. The last 2km of the drive is reasonably steep and windy and it heads past some serious looking avalanche fences.

You can park at the base outside the day lodge, or a little further up at the ropeway station. Car parking is free on weekdays.

Train & Bus

To get there from Tokyo, catch the bullet train to Echigo Yuzawa (about 80 minutes), then transfer to the Joetsu or Hokuhoku line to get a train to the Muikamachi station (17-20 minutes). See google maps for train timetables and fares.

From the Muikamachi train station there is a bus service to Hakkaisan (it takes about 30 minutes), but there are only a couple of schedules per day.
